[Invasive mycoses in France: what are the trends?].

The most frequent invasive mycoses in France are candidemia, Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia, and invasive aspergillosis. They occur primarily in immunocompromised patients. The risk of Pneumocystis pneumonia and cryptococcosis has notably decreased for people living with HIV through the past two decades. Patients with diabetes or an autoimmune disease represent an increasing proportion of these cases. Mortality of invasive mycoses is still high, particularly in cases of candidemia and invasive aspergillosis. Azole-resistant Aspergillus spp. isolates remain rare in France and the proportion o…

Cytomorphology of Deep Mycoses in Dogs and Cats.

The purpose of this review is to familiarize clinical pathologists and clinicians with the cytomorphologic features associated with deep mycoses in dogs and cats. The goals are to develop a more unified approach to the description and interpretation of fungal cytomorphology and to facilitate the categorization of fungi that do not produce unique morphologic structures in tissue.

Advances in the Treatment of Mycoses in Pediatric Patients.

The main indications for antifungal drug administration in pediatrics are reviewed as well as an update of the data of antifungal agents and antifungal policies performed. Specifically, antifungal therapy in three main areas is updated as follows: a) Prophylaxis of premature neonates against invasive candidiasis; b) management of candidemia and meningoencephalitis in neonates; and c) prophylaxis, empiric therapy, and targeted antifungal therapy in children with primary or secondary immunodeficiencies. Fluconazole remains the most frequent antifungal prophylactic agent given to high-risk neonat

[SPREAD OF ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS MYCOSES IN THE WORLD].

Contemporary information on the spread in the world of especially dangerous mycoses - coccidioidomycosis, histoplasmosis, blastomycosis and paracoccidioidomycosis are presented in the review. Sources and infection routes of causative agents of these diseases are examined, clinical forms of mycoses are briefly characterized. An increase of morbidity due to them over the last decade is noted. A necessity of timely diagnostics of imported mycoses outside endemic regions is underscored.

Isavuconazole Treatment of Cryptococcosis and Dimorphic Mycoses.

BACKGROUND: Invasive fungal diseases (IFD) caused by Cryptococcus and dimorphic fungi are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Isavuconazole (ISAV) is a novel, broad-spectrum, triazole antifungal agent (IV and by mouth [PO]) developed for the treatment of IFD. It displays potent activity in vitro against these pathogens and in this report we examine outcomes of patients with cryptococcosis or dimorphic fungal infections treated with ISAV. METHODS: The VITAL study was an open-label nonrandomized phase 3 trial conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ISAV treatment in ma

Superficial mycoses and HIV infection in Yaounde.

The incidence of superficial infections in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is increasing in Yaounde. To determine the prevalence of superficial mycoses in HIV-positive subjects, a study was carried out in different hospital settings in Yaounde over a period of 18 months. Clinical observations were followed by the culture of samples on Sabouraud's glucose agar. Of the 148 HIVab-positive patients examined, 79 (44 males and 35 females) had at least one superficial mycosis (53%). The clinical presentations and the causative organisms did not differ from those found in immunocompet…

Changing strategies for treatment of systemic mycoses.

There have been a number of changes in strategies in antifungal therapy in the past few years. AIDS related mycoses have decreased, and the increase of fluconazole resistant Candida albicans may be slowing because fewer severely immune depressed patients require constant fluconazole suppression. Candida species continue to be relatively common blood culture isolates. About half of these are C. albicans and half non-albicans species. In recent years, we have moved from the use of amphotericin B to fluconazole for initial treatment of candidemia. We have seen fluconazole resistant isolates emerg…

[Histopathological diagnosis of mycoses in veterinary pathology].

Histopathological analysis demonstrates the morphology of the fungi and shows their relationship with tissue lesions, which is a valuable information in the diagnosis of veterinary mycoses, especially in superficial infections where reservoirs make difficult the diagnosis using other techniques. On the other hand, histopathological analysis should be complementary to other methods such as culture, immunohistochemistry, serology, PCR, etc. In this work, the most relevant histopathological features of some of the most common mycoses of domestic animals, some of which have zoonotic potential, are…
