Background: Myiasis is a disease caused by the infestation of human tissue by the larval stage of various flies. It has been identified in sub-Saharan Africa and in tropical parts of the Americas. Cases have also been identified among travelers returning to the United States. Infestations may involve any part of the body, including the scalp, and open wounds may become infected with these larvae. The primary cause of wound myiasis in the western hemisphere is Cochliomyia hominivorax. Case Report: We present a case of wound myiasis in an adult Haitian male with a persistent wound for 2 years. T…

Myiasis is a parasitic disease of humans and vertebrates, caused by fly larvae feeding on the host's necrotic or living tissue. Myiasis is classified into cutaneous and cavitary myiasis. Cavitary myiasis is rare and occurs more frequently in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and America associated with low economic status and poor hygiene. This article reviews current literature, provides general descriptions, and discusses life cycles of each species. It also gives diagnosis, treatment techniques and descriptions of each type of illness that result from interaction / infestation.

Nasal myiasis is a rare condition, with only a few reported cases and no treatment consensus. We propose a conservative treatment approach with saline irrigation and debridement. Two patients in the ICU of Norfolk General Hospital, a tertiary academic referral center, presented simultaneously with nasal myiasis. Both patients were negative for necrotic masses or tumors, and neither patient had any contributory medical comorbidities. Both patients were treated conservatively with a single dose of pyrantel pamoate, daily sinus irrigation with saline, and daily bedside endoscopic debridement. Aft…

The term myiasis refers to growth of parasitic diptera in the living or dead tissue of vertebrate animal. Most cases of myiasis in humans are mild and rarely present in the mouth. We describe 2 children with severe oral myiasis that evolved to oral and maxillofacial mutilations. We discuss preventive measures.

BACKGROUND: Cordylobia anthropophaga is one of the most common agents of urogenital myiasis in African tropical regions. A case of vulvar myiasis due to the larvae of Cordylobia anthropophaga in a 16-year-old female is presented with a systematic review of the literature.
CASE: A 16-year-old female with a history of recent journey to Senegal presented with a vulvar boil-like inflammatory lesion. A living insect larva was extracted from the lesion. It was identified as a Cordylobia anthropophaga larva.
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS: Diagnosis of vulvar myiasis must be considered if vulvar boil-like…

Myiasis, a term introduced by William Hope in 1840, refers to the invasion of tissues and organs of animals and human wounds and certain body cavities by the dipteran larvae, which manifests as subcutaneous furunculoid or boil-like lesions. Oral myiasis is a rare pathology and a risk to the patient's life. A higher incidence is seen in rural areas, affecting the tropical and subtropical zones of Africa and America. It can be secondary to medical or anatomic conditions, such as cancrum oris, neglected mandibular fracture, cerebral palsy, mouth breathing, anterior open bite, incompetent lips, an…

Myiasis, the invasion of live human tissue by larva of Diptera, is reported in the nasal cavity of a 5.5-year-old Iranian girl. She was referred from Golestan Province to the Shaheed Rajaei Heart Center in Tehran. In the 41th day after admission, a live parasite was found in her nasal secretions suction identified presumably as a second instar larvae of a facultative myiasis, Woholfartia nuba (Diptera: Sarcophagidae), on the basis of mtDNA-COI and morphological characteristics. Since presence of the larva was recorded after hospitalization, by definition, this infestation is considered a nosoc…

The authors report a 9-day old neonate from a rural area with umbilical myiasis caused by fly larvae of Cochliomyia hominivorax. The blowfly causing this infestation belongs to the family Calliphoridae (Diptera) and the genus Cochliomyia that usually infests only open wounds of animals. The new-world screw-worm fly Cochliomyia hominivorax, is an obligate ectoparasite of domestic and wild animals, and in some cases may affect humans. This is the rare reported case of neonatal umbilical myiasis with sepsis in the world literature.

Myiasis is a disease caused by fly larvae. Although adult cases have been reported, neonatal myiasis is a rare condition and there are few reports about this subject. In this article, we report a 12-day-old female neonate who was referred to us due to larvae in her eyes and ears. She was infected with Lucilia spp. larvae and was treated with proper antibiotics.

Oral myiasis is a rare disease in humans associated with poor oral hygiene, suppurative oral lesions, alcoholism and senility, among other conditions. A case of oral myiasis in a 34-year-old white male with advanced periodontal disease and neurologic deficit is reported. Treatment consisted of manual removal of the larvae, one by one, with the help of clinical forceps and subsequent management of the periodontal disease.
