BACKGROUND: Intestinal subepithelial myofibroblasts (ISEMFs) produce inflammatory cytokines in response to certain stimuli. In the intestine of patients with Crohn's disease (CD), cytokine synthesis is modified and an increased number of myofibroblasts has been observed. The intracellular redox state influences cytokine production and oxidative stress is present in the intestinal mucosa of CD patients.
METHODS: This study was performed in ISEMFs isolated from the colon of patients with active CD and in a myofibroblast cell line derived from human colonic mucosa: 18Co cells. Cellular glutathio…

Myofibroblasts are a major source of proinflammatory cytokines and extracellular matrix in progressive tissue fibrosis leading to chronic organ failure. Myofibroblasts are characterized by de novo expression of smooth muscle alpha-actin (SMalphaA), which correlates with the extent of disease progression, although their exact role is unknown. In vitro cultured myofibroblasts from kidney of SMalphaA knock-out mice demonstrate significantly more prominent cell motility, proliferation, and type-I procollagen expression than those of wild-type myofibroblasts. These pro-fibrotic properties are suppr…

Myofibroblasts were successfully grown in tissue culture from the connective tissue stroma of three human breast adenocarcinomas. These cells had slower growth kinetics than fibroblasts from normal human dermis, as did myofibroblasts from two granulating wounds. Electron microscopy of breast cancer slices and tissue cultures of these specimens confirmed the presence of myofibroblasts in both. In early passages, the specificity of carcinoma-derived myofibroblast growth kinetics is preserved. The exact role of myofibroblasts in breast cancer, whether helping or hindering tumor growth, remains un…

The origin of cells comprising the capsule which forms around free-floating intraperitoneal blood clots has been examined in rats. One day after implantation the surface of the clot was covered by 1-2 layers of rounded nucleated cells. The majority of these cells were monocyte/macrophage in type with many cytoplasmic folds. Over the next 2 wk a thick capsule composed of dense connective tissue and myofibroblasts developed, completely covering the clot. The surface became covered by a contiguous layer of mesothelial cells, apparently derived from displaced cells of the damaged peritoneum. Detai…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate potential diagnostic approaches and therapeutic strategies for renal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMT).
METHODS: Renal IMT is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm with intermediate malignant potential arising within the urinary system. Its clinical presentation and imaging characteristics are nonspecific; thus, histopathological examination remains the diagnostic gold standard. This article presents a retrospective analysis of the clinical course of a single patient diagnosed with renal IMT.
PATIENT: An elderly female presented with intermittent abdominal pain. Abdom

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is an uncommon mesenchymal neoplasm. Urachal involvement is exceedingly rare, and evidence regarding its clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management remains limited.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 62-year-old female patient who presented with urinary frequency and dysuria for 8 days. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a mass at the junction of the urachus and the anterosuperior wall of the bladder, which was further confirmed by cystoscopy. The patient underwent laparoscopic resection of the urachal mass combined with partia

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour (IMT), also known as Inflammatory Myofibroblastoma, is a rare, benign yet aggressive lesion that often mimics malignancy. Histologically, it is composed of spindle-shaped myofibroblasts and chronic inflammatory infiltrates. Immunohistochemistry shows positive staining for smooth muscle actin and anaplastic lymphoma kinase, aiding in diagnosis.Typically found in the lungs, mesentery, and mammary glands, its occurrence in the oro-maxillofacial region is exceedingly rare. We present a case of an early-adolescent female with mandibular IMT, addressing the diagno…

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine adhesions (IUA) is one of the most common gynecological diseases and main causes of uterine infertility. Among proposed hypotheses on IUA development, the reduced endometrial regeneration resulting from loss of functional stem cells has been proposed as the key factor affecting the IUA prognosis. However, the underlying mechanisms mostly remain unclear. Because the eMSCs (endometrial mesenchymal stem/stromal cells) play a critical role in both supporting the gland development and also preparing the environment for embryo implantation through decidualization, the charac

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a mesenchymal neoplasm that rarely metastasizes and is more commonly seen in children, adolescents, and young adults than older adults. These tumors, composed of myofibroblasts and inflammatory cells, are often confused for a local infection due to the inflammatory cell infiltration, and they form in mucosal surfaces but rarely arise in the orbit. We present the case of a 6-year-old girl with excisional biopsy-confirmed conjunctival stromal IMT. There was no evidence of recurrence 2 years following resection with no subsequent medical therapy.

Here, we report a case of a congenital peribronchial myofibroblastic tumor (CPMT). A 34-year-old primigravida was referred to our hospital at 31 gestation weeks because of suspected congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM). Fetal ultrasonography showed a mass measuring 4.6 × 4.0 × 3.9 cm with mixed high and low echogenicity in the left lung, which was associated with microvascular blood flow in the tumor. Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a low-intensity left lobe lung lesion on a T2-weighted image. These findings suggested that the mass was a CPAM with atypical hypointens

Macrophage-myofibroblast transformation (MMT) has emerged as a discovery in the field of fibrotic disease research. MMT is the process by which macrophages differentiate into myofibroblasts, leading to organ fibrosis following organ damage and playing an important role in fibrosis formation and progression. Recently, many new advances have been made in studying the mechanisms of MMT occurrence in fibrotic diseases. This article reviews some critical recent findings on MMT, including the origin of MMT in myofibroblasts, the specific mechanisms by which MMT develops, and the mechanisms and effec…

Three dogs were diagnosed with spontaneous pneumothorax and referred to the Ontario Veterinary College Health Sciences Centre for management. The 3 dogs were diagnosed with secondary spontaneous pneumothorax due to paragonimosis. The diagnosis was made by visualization of adult trematodes during surgical exploration with histopathological confirmation in 1 dog, and detection of trematode eggs via fecal sedimentation in the other 2 dogs. Two of the dogs developed unusual additional lesions, including hemoabdomen, muscle abscess, and abdominal adhesions. These were suspected to be secondary to a

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are neoplastic lesions characterized by the proliferation of spindle cells with myofibroblastic features and lymphocyte infiltration. Primary lesions can develop in several locations but rarely arise in the colon as described herein. The present case was that of a 69-year-old woman who visited our hospital with complaints of bloody bowel discharge and a prolapsed mass from the anus. A 20-mm tumor was identified on visual and digital examination. Lower gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a pedunculated, elevated lesion above the dentate line, which sho

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are rare benign tumors that can occur anywhere in the body, most commonly in the pediatric and young adult populations. The gold standard treatment is surgical resection, possibly along with chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. IMTs have a high recurrence rate and may present with secondary symptoms, such as hemoptysis, fever, and stridor. We present a 13-year-old male patient with hemoptysis for one month who was subsequently diagnosed with an obstructing IMT of the trachea. The preoperative assessment showed the patient was not in acute distress and co

Only 0.3-1% of laryngeal cancer are non-squamous cell neoplasms. Of these, a rare entity is inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour (IMT), in which anaplastic lymphoma kinase-1 (ALK-1) is frequently expressed. Just 50 cases of IMT have been reported. Therefore, many otolaryngologists may be unfamiliar with this type of tumour and be prone to its over- or undertreatment. We report a case of ALK-1-negative IMT treated with transoral endoscopic excision and disease-free 6 months after surgery.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a mesenchymal spindle cell tumour with low malignant potential which is extremely rare in breasts. Because of the lack of typical imaging and clinical characteristics of IMT, it is easy to misdiagnose before operation. We now report a case of a 37-year-old woman presenting with a mass in her left breast. Ultrasound showed a well-circumscribed lesion in the lower outer quadrant. The patient underwent lumpectomy, and histopathology revealed a tumor which was composed of fusiform cells and inflammatory cells. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) showed tumor cell

PURPOSE: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare tumor composed of mesenchymal myofibroblastic spindle cells enveloped by an inflammatory infiltrate. Historically, this tumor sparked debate regarding whether it was a true malignancy with metastatic potential or merely a locally destructive physiologic inflammatory response. Few reports of IMT exist in the recent literature, with the majority of cases occurring in the pediatric population and favoring the lungs. Here we present an exceedingly rare case of IMT involving the larynx of a 22-year-old female.
RESULTS: A hemorrhagic and s

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are rare tumors that have been described only in a few cases in the literature. IMTs are mesenchymal neoplasms that typically affect children and young adults. The most common anatomical locations are the abdominopelvic region, lung, and retroperitoneum, but any site may be involved. Given that there are no clinical or radiographic characteristics specific to IMTs, the diagnosis is made by pathology. We report on a young woman presenting with an acute appendicitis-like clinical picture due to an IMT located in the ascending colon to raise awareness of
