Effect of Personalization in Children's Fables.

Therapeutic Assessment of families with children emphasize children's active involvement and the use of developmentally appropriate feedback formats. Narrative and metaphor-based approaches, such as therapeutic fables, have been proposed as effective tools to communicate assessment-related information in a way that is emotionally accessible and engaging for children. Personalization is assumed to be a key mechanism underlying their effectiveness; however, little is known about whether increasing levels of personalization yield incremental benefits. The present study examined the impact of diff

PFAS Contamination and the Impacts of Environmental Turbulence: The Role of Collective Memory and Narrative Epidemiology in Invisible Disaster.

PFAS contamination represents a slow, invisible chronic technological disaster with documented long-term psychosocial impacts on affected communities. However, existing research has predominantly focused on toxicological and biomedical outcomes, leaving the lived experiences and narrative dimensions of contamination underexplored. This study investigates how residents of PFAS-contaminated communities experience and narrate environmental contamination by applying Edelstein's Theory of Environmental Turbulence (TET) and integrating a bottom-up stage-based model of psychosocial reaction with narr

Narrative Matters: Young people with lived experience discuss I Swear.

Young people with lived experience of tics reflected on the recent film I Swear, a biography of John Davidson who grew up in the 1980s with Tourette syndrome. They considered the ways in which themes raised by the film connected with their own experiences. Their observations were discussed in the context of the Social Model of Disability and the Medical Model, illustrated by personal examples. The challenges of media representations and societal responses to tics in the recent past and in contemporary society were explored. They proposed that society and professionals must hold a position at t

Exploring the narrative landscape: The discursive construction of identity for Chinese enterprises in Africa.

This study investigates the construction of corporate identities by Chinese enterprises in Africa, employing the Three-dimensional Model of Fairchough in conjunction with the corporate communication strategies outlined by Kim and Rader. Through an extensive analysis of official website content from 200 Chinese companies, this study explores how these corporations utilize communication strategies to project their identities. The findings reveal a strategic use of discourse to align corporate practices with local cultures and business norms, facilitating their expansion and acceptance in African

Exploring a method for extracting concerns of multiple breast cancer patients in the domain of patient narratives using BERT and its optimization by domain adaptation using masked language modeling.

Narratives posted on the internet by patients contain a vast amount of information about various concerns. This study aimed to extract multiple concerns from interviews with breast cancer patients using the natural language processing (NLP) model bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT). A total of 508 interview transcriptions of breast cancer patients written in Japanese were labeled with five types of concern labels: "treatment," "physical," "psychological," "work/financial," and "family/friends." The labeled texts were used to create a multi-label classifier by fine-tu

Narratives of childhood sexual abuse: healing through music in Ian McEwan's On Chesil Beach.

Narratives of survivors or by survivors offer useful and compelling insights into the experiences of abuse and its consequent effect on health. Reading such narratives can help a physician or clinician to understand the complexities of abuse. Furthermore, the critical study of narratives can open multiple therapeutic options for survivors of abuse to cater both their mental health and medical problems. In this article, we deal with the genre of childhood sexual abuse survivor's narrative and its clinical application adding to the discourse of medical humanities and then critically examine one

Journey for a cure: Illness narratives of obstetric fistula survivors in North Central Nigeria.

Obstetric fistula is a life transforming event resulting in embodied biographical disruption. Survivors suffer myriad long-term physical and emotional consequences. This paper is an account of a narrative inquiry, conducted with 15 fistula survivors in North-central, Nigeria, who described how their identities had been transformed by their condition. A narrative therapeutic approach, using Frank's 'chaos, restitution and quest' typology, was used to map their recovery narratives. 'Chaos', described by Frank as the opposite of restitution, dominated, with women losing hope of recovery. Women's

"My life disappeared in illness": bipolar disorder and themes in narrative identity.

Bipolar Disorder (BD) has substantial consequences for the course of life and the formation of self and identity. In the present study, we extended the existing literature by examining narrative identity. Fifteen female outpatients with remitted BD and fifteen non-clinical control participants described past and future chapters in their life stories. The chapters were coded for agency, communion, redemption and contamination. Patients diagnosed with BD described their past chapters with lower agency, lower communion and more contamination compared to the control group. Contrary to our expectat

Complex Decisions.

Essays and articles in the November-December 2022 issue of the Hastings Center Report explore the complexities of medical decision-making. A case-study essay, for example, argues that the dismaying decision to perform resuscitation efforts on a patient who had obviously been dead for some time can be understood in the context of the harmful practice of defensive medicine. A narrative essay concerns whether an adolescent with locked-in syndrome should be asked her wishes about life-sustaining interventions, and the articles illuminate the ethical value of the parental role in pediatric decision

Experience of cardiac tele-rehabilitation: analysis of patient narratives.

INTRODUCTION: Research suggests the need for further studies of patients' experiences of cardiac tele-rehabilitation to understand how they adapt to life with heart disease in a program with long-distance contact, remote supervision and monitoring of health behavior. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore patients' experiences of tele-rehabilitation and the perceived gains of taking part in the program. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven patients were interviewed using a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach. Interview transcripts were analyzed as narratives using the interpretation theory

[The silent itinerary of people with HIV told through oral history].

The emergence of AIDS as a social and historical phenomenon has brought along with it specters held in social imagination, aggravating the concept of plague, generating strong feelings and prejudice, becoming a stigma. Such factors ultimately affect HIV bearers' well being. Thus, this study aims to understand the dimension of the problem of HIV bearers who have not seeked treatment in the National Health System and the reasons which make this search so difficult. The adopted methodological approach was thematic oral accounts. Five HIV bearers collaborated in this study. By using content analys

Difficult encounters with a hemophilic patient: the inner perspective of physicians.

This study aimed at exploring the hematologists' internal representation of a difficult encounter with a hemophilic patient, using a written open format. Narrations were analyzed with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Three main issues were identified, each with sub-issues: (1) Inside the relationship: to tell or not to tell, the balance between a normal life and a deviant medical condition, the guilt; (2) The borders of the professional role: professional values, the "do-it-all" doctor; and (3) The existential confrontation. This study reveals the deep involvement of physicians with t…

["Workpeople in general are healthier [...] than the masters". Experience of illness and masculinity in autobiographies of workpeople].

Workers' autobiographies of the late 19th and early 20th centuries depict, at length, diseases both in terms of physical description and impact, and in terms of psychological effects. Drastic physical defects and their consequences are explicitly described. Many writers appear weak against the primary presumption of the strong, male body of the workers. Mourning and dejection over the authors' own weaknesses and the illnesses of others (relatives and colleagues) are prevalent. However, the masculinity of the first-person narrator, in principle, is not eclipsed or overshadowed by doubt because

Medial-to-Lateral Approach to the Splenic Flexure Resection and End Transverse Colostomy: A Case Report and Operative Video.

Splenic flexure cancer is relatively rare among colon cancers. We present a case of a 76-year-old female with a partially obstructing tumor in the proximal descending colon and pulmonary metastasis who underwent a laparoscopic resection of the splenic flexure with end transverse colostomy due to clinical symptoms of obstruction. This case highlights several important technical considerations in safely performing the laparoscopic resection of the splenic flexure through the medial-to-lateral approach starting at the plane below the inferior mesenteric vein (IMV), taking care to preserve the tai

Microsurgical Resection of a Meningioma at the Entrance of Dorello's Canal Causing VI Cranial Nerve Compression: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

We describe the case of a 73-yr-old female patient with a 2-yr history of diplopia that has progressively become worse. Physical examination revealed a right VI cranial nerve (CN) palsy. Magnetic resonance imaging and angiography showed a dolichoectatic basilar artery near the VI CN. A suboccipital craniectomy was performed, initially with the intention to perform a microvascular decompression; however, a red mass was encountered at the entrance of the right Dorello's canal that was compressing the VI CN. Complete resection of the lesion was done and decompression of the nerve was accomplished
