Survival after resection of ampullary carcinoma: a national population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Ampullary cancer is the second most common periampullary cancer, with a resection and survival rate more favorable than that for pancreatic cancer. However, most reports have been conducted at single institutions with small sample sizes, and results may not reflect the practices and outcomes in the community. Our objective was to complete a population-based analysis of patients undergoing resection for ampullary carcinoma and compare it with outcomes in the published literature. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with ampullary cancer reported in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End R

Benefits of home-based multidisciplinary exercise and supportive care in inoperable non-small cell lung cancer - protocol for a phase II randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers, and is a leading cause of cancer mortality world-wide. Due to lack of early specific symptoms, the majority of patients present with advanced, inoperable disease and five-year relative survival across all stages of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is 14%. People with lung cancer also report higher levels of symptom distress than those with other forms of cancer. Several benefits for survival and patient reported outcomes are reported from physical activity and exercise in other tumour groups. We report the protocol for a

Updated Epidemiology of Gastrointestinal Cancers in the Asia-Pacific: Evidence From GBD 2021 and GLOBOCAN 2022.

Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer poses a significant burden in the Asia-Pacific region. Growing and aging populations, cancer prevention efforts, and treatment advances have all influenced GI cancer trends. This review provides an updated overview of GI cancer epidemiology in the region, using age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) and death rates (ASDRs) from the Global Burden of Disease 2021 and the Global Cancer Observatory 2022. Differences between the two datasets should be interpreted with consideration of variations in methodology, standard populations, and reporting years. Colorectal can

Exposure to nitrosatable drugs during pregnancy and childhood cancer: A cohort study in Taiwan.

Nitrosatable drugs can contribute to the endogenous formation of N-nitroso compounds (NOCs) in humans. NOCs are carcinogenic in animal systems. However, the relationship between nitrosatable drug exposure in pregnancy and childhood cancer risk remains inconclusive. Using the Taiwan Maternal and Child Health Database (N = 2,090,806), we conducted a population-based cohort study of mother-child pairs with children born 2004-2015, to investigate the link between exposure to nitrosatable drugs in pregnancy and childhood cancer risk among offspring. Prescriptions of nitrosatable drugs were obtained

Aboriginal women have a higher risk of cervical abnormalities at screening; South Australia, 1993-2016.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical cancer mortality has halved in Australia since the national cervical screening program began in 1991, but elevated mortality rates persist for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women (referred to as Aboriginal women in this report). We investigated differences by Aboriginal status in abnormality rates predicted by cervical cytology and confirmed by histological diagnoses among screened women. METHODS: Using record linkage between cervical screening registry and public hospital records in South Australia, we obtained Aboriginal status of women aged 20-69 for 1993-2016 (

Effect of early exercise on functional recovery and surgical outcomes after post-mastectomy breast reconstruction: study protocol for a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Although mastectomy and reconstruction have a positive impact on breast cancer patients' quality of life, postoperative side effects such as shoulder functional limitations and pain are common. To reduce these side effects, the importance of early postoperative exercise has been emphasized, and the need for tailored exercise programs is emerging. Therefore, this randomized controlled trial (RCT) aims to investigate the impact of a tailored early exercise program based on patient symptoms and timing on shoulder and trunk function and health-related outcomes in breast cancer patients

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Impact of a FIT Based Colorectal Cancer Screening Program on Gastric Cancer Incidence, Early Diagnosis and Patients' Survival.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In countries with an intermediate incidence of gastric cancer (GC), it has been suggested that offering an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (UGIE) to individuals referred for a screening colonoscopy following a positive result in the fecal immunochemical test (FIT) may be cost-effective. This study was designed to evaluate the impact of a FIT-based screening program on GC incidence, early diagnosis, and mortality. METHODS: Population-based retrospective cohort study in northern Portugal. Data on GC cases were retrieved from the Portuguese National Cancer Registry (RON). G
