Besides the Drinking in Alcohol's Harm to Others: Potential Economic and Environmental Factors.

OBJECTIVE: This article considers how harm from others' drinking is distributed across several economic and environmental factors. METHOD: Economic, environmental, demographic, and drinking measures include household income, financial disadvantage indicators, and home spaciousness; neighborhood socioeconomic status, connections, and safety; and respondent's gender, age group, and risky drinking status. This article explores the interactions of these factors with harms from the drinking of others in a 2021 survey of 2,574 Australian adults. RESULTS: The home's degree of crowding (persons per

Neighborhood Walkability Is Associated With Global Positioning System-Derived Community Mobility of Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood walkability may encourage greater out-of-home travel (ie, community mobility) to support independent functioning in later life. We examined associations between a novel walkability audit index and Global Positioning System (GPS)-derived community mobility in community-dwelling older adults. We compared associations with the validated Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Walkability Index and further examined moderation by clinical walking speed. METHODS: Participants were 146 older adults (Mean = 77.0 ± 6.5 years, 68% women) at baseline of a randomized trial

Neighborhood Stressors and Epigenetic Age Acceleration Among Older Americans.

OBJECTIVES: Exposure to stressful neighborhood environments is a well-established risk factor for health deterioration and premature death. However, the biological underpinnings are not fully understood. Epigenetic aging may function as a key molecular pathway to adverse health outcomes among residents of high-stress neighborhoods. This study examines the associations between neighborhood social stressors (socioeconomic deprivation, observed and perceived disorder, and low social cohesion) and epigenetic age (DunedinPACE and Principal component adjusted [PC] PCHorvath, PCHannum, PCPhenoAge, PC

Area Deprivation Index and Frailty Among Older People With HIV.

We evaluated the relationship between neighborhood disadvantage (measured by the Area Deprivation Index [ADI]) and frailty. We performed a secondary analysis, pooling cross-sectional data collected from 209 people with HIV (PWH) aged ≥50 years enrolled in studies in Colorado (CO) and Missouri (MO). MO participants (N = 137) had a higher ADI (µ= 70, ơ2 = 25) compared to CO (µ= 32, ơ2 = 15; p < .001). No significant differences in ADI were observed between frailty categories when cohorts were examined either separately or combined; however, when comparing individual frailty criteria, the most ap

Patterns of early childhood adversity and neighborhood deprivation predict unique challenges in adolescence: A UK birth cohort study.

This study applies a comprehensive bioecological perspective to address a significant gap in the childhood adversity literature by employing latent profile analysis to examine the impact of diverse combinations of early childhood adversities and protective factors on adolescent psychosocial and behavioral outcomes. Drawing from the United Kingdom's Millennium Cohort Study (N = 19,444), we identified eight unique profiles of early childhood adversity and protective factors. These profiles provide a nuanced understanding of adversity combinations and allow for differentiation between groups with

Multidimensional structural racism and estimated cancer risk from traffic-related air pollution.

BACKGROUND: Traffic-related air pollutants have been associated with a variety of adverse human health impacts, including cancers. In the United States, numerous studies have documented racial inequities in neighborhood exposures to traffic-related air pollution. Emerging evidence suggests that structural racism may influence neighborhood exposures to air pollutants. However, existing research has largely focused on residential racial segregation, one indicator of structural racism. This study developed a multidimensional measure of structural racism to examine the relationship between structu

Associations of Household and Neighborhood Contexts and Hair Cortisol Among Mexican-Origin Adolescents From Low-Income Immigrant Families.

Although neighborhood contexts serve as upstream determinants of health, it remains unclear how these contexts "get under the skin" of Mexican-origin youth, who are disproportionately concentrated in highly disadvantaged yet co-ethnic neighborhoods. The current study examines the associations between household and neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES), neighborhood racial-ethnic and immigrant composition, and hair cortisol concentration (HCC)-a physiological index of chronic stress response-among Mexican-origin adolescents from low-income immigrant families in the United States. A total of 2

Neighborhood environment and quality of life of older adults in eastern Nepal: findings from a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Quality of life (QoL) is a subjective measure reflecting individuals' evaluations based on their personal goals and values. While global research shows the role of neighborhood factors like ethnic diversity and socio-cultural dynamics on QoL, these are unexplored in the Nepali context. Therefore, this study examined the relationship between neighborhood environment and QoL among Nepali older adults in eastern Nepal. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 847 non-institutionalized older adults (aged ≥ 60 years) from two districts in eastern Nepal. QoL was evaluated using th

The neighborhood contribution to black-white perinatal disparities: an example from two north Carolina counties, 1999-2001.

Previous studies of black-white disparities in perinatal outcomes have generally not controlled for both observed and unobserved neighborhood inequalities with models that compare only black and white women living in the same neighborhoods. Using 1999-2001 birth certificate data from 2 counties in North Carolina, the authors employed a hybrid fixed-effects approach to assess the total contribution of neighborhood factors to both absolute and relative racial disparities in low birth weight, preterm birth (PTB), and smallness for gestational age at term. Neighborhood factors made a notable contr

Perceived Housing Discrimination and Self-Reported Health: How Do Neighborhood Features Matter?

BACKGROUND: While the association between perceived discrimination and health has been investigated, little is known about whether and how neighborhood characteristics moderate this association. PURPOSE: We situate discrimination in the housing context and use relative deprivation and social capital perspectives to fill the knowledge gap. METHODS: We applied multilevel logistic modeling to 9,842 adults in 830 neighborhoods in Philadelphia to examine three hypotheses. RESULTS: First, the detrimental effect of discrimination on self-reported health was underestimated without considering neigh…

Leveraging neighborhood-level Information to Improve Model Fairness in Predicting Prenatal Depression.

IMPORTANCE: Perinatal depression (PND) affects 10-20% of pregnant women, with significant racial disparities in prevalence, screening, and treatment. Neighborhood-level factors significantly influence PND risk, particularly among women of color, but current machine learning models using electronic medical records (EMRs) rarely incorporate neighborhood characteristics. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether integrating neighborhood-level information with EMRs improves fairness in PND prediction while identifying key neighborhood factors influencing model bias across racial/ethnic groups. Understanding the Interplay Between Neighborhood Structural Factors, Social Processes, and Alcohol Outlets on Child Physical Abuse.

This article seeks to understand the relative influence of neighborhood structural characteristics (e.g., disadvantage) and social processes (e.g., interactions between residents) on child physical abuse. Using multilevel modeling in a sample of 3,023 parents in 194 zip codes, structural characteristics of factor scores representing residential stability and foreign-born Latino males were negatively related to child physical abuse. High proportions of naturalized and Asian/Pacific Islander families were positively related to the frequency of physical abuse. Higher levels of neighborhood social

Neighborhood Disadvantage and Birth Outcomes Among Refugees.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage and birth outcomes among refugee women in Denmark, leveraging a natural experiment. METHODS: This register-based study included 15 118 infants born to women who arrived in Denmark as refugees during 1986 to 1998, when a dispersal policy was in place that quasirandomly assigned newcomers to neighborhoods with varying degrees of socioeconomic disadvantage. Neighborhood disadvantage was measured using a composite index representing neighborhood-level income, education, unemployment, and welfare assistance. Thes

Residential proximity to major roadways and prevalent diabetes in older adults: a cross-sectional study based on CLHLS.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is a major global public health concern, and China bears a growing diabetes burden that calls for targeted prevention. High-income country studies link residential proximity to roadways with diabetes, yet evidence from developing countries is limited. This population-based analysis delivers robust evidence for environmental health interventions and age-friendly urban planning for Chinese older adults. METHODS: We used nationally representative data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). After excluding those with missing values for key variables,

Residential green space and incidence of cardiovascular disease: Evidence from a nationwide population-based study.

Residential green space may be an environmental determinant of cardiovascular disease (CVD); however, longitudinal evidence based on structural measures of green space in nationwide populations remains limited in South Korea. We investigated the association between the proportion of residential green space and incident CVD, with particular attention paid to variation by degree of urbanization. Data from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort, including 321,999 participants without prior CVD who underwent health examinations between 2010 and 2012, were analyzed. Residential accessibility to indoor and outdoor physical activity facilities and overweight/obesity among Chinese preschool children in 551 cities.

Childhood overweight and obesity remain major public health concerns worldwide. Accessibility to neighborhood physical activity (PA) facilities has been proposed as a potentially modifiable environmental factor, but existing evidence remains inconsistent. In this cross-sectional analysis of 164,649 Chinese preschool children, we examined the associations between residential accessibility to indoor and outdoor PA facilities and overweight/obesity. Facility accessibility, measured via point-of-interest (POI) data and weighted by road-network distance (RND) within residential buffers of 500m, 100

Does staying put protect? How length of residence shapes the neighborhood cohesion-alcohol link among adults in the United States.

AIMS: Excessive alcohol consumption is the third leading cause of death in the United States, yet most neighborhood research on drinking focuses on adolescents and emerging adults. We examined how neighborhood cohesion and length of residency jointly relate to past-year binge drinking and weekly heavy drinking among US adults aged 25-65. METHODS: Using 2013-2018 National Health Interview Survey data (N = 78 398), we created a four-item neighborhood cohesion index (α = 0.90) assessing trust, willingness to help, shared values, and belonging. Residency was categorized as <4 years, 4-10 years, o

Neighborhood social cohesion and psychological distress among caregiving spouses with or without a nearby social support network.

BACKGROUND: Caregiving spouses often experience substantial physical and emotional strain, placing them at elevated risk for psychological distress. While nearby social support networks and neighborhood social cohesion have each been linked to caregiver well-being, neighborhood social cohesion may serve as a complementary resource, particularly for those without nearby social support. However, little is known about whether the association between neighborhood social cohesion and psychological distress varies depending on the availability of nearby social support among caregiving spouses.
