Benign fibrous histiocytoma of the cheek.

Benign fibrous histiocytoma (FH) is a benign neoplasm of a mixture of fibroblastic and histiocytic cells. The tumor occurs most frequently on the skin of the extremities but rarely in deep soft tissues of the head and neck. The diagnosis of benign FH may be clinically difficult, and is frequently confirmed after excision. The most important diagnostic distinction is the separation of this tumor from malignant FH. A 22-year-old male presented with a painless swelling mass on the left cheek. Detailed clinical and laboratory examinations were performed. The patient received angiography with embol

Large calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor with extension into the maxillary sinus: a case report.

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare, locally invasive neoplasm characterized by the presence of amyloid material that can become calcified. It often is found in the posterior region of the mandible. Such tumors in the maxilla and those that invade the maxillary sinus are extremely rare. This article presents the sixth reported clinical case of a CEOT that invaded the maxillary sinus and extended to the interior of the nasal cavity. The tumor had grown toward the sinus roof, but there was no association with an impacted tooth. Histopathologically, the tumor was composed of

Metastatic solitary fibrous tumor of the meninges. Case report.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a unique tumor composed of interstitial dendritic cells that was first described in the thorax and subsequently reported in diverse organs. Extrathoracic SFTs are predominantly benign but rare malignant cases have been documented. In the nervous system, SFT has been described as a meningeal lesion although all 14 previously reported cases were benign. The authors report the first case of a meningeal SFT occurring in a 55-year-old woman. The tumor first presented as a meningeal lesion that after three recurrences over a 10-year period metastasized to the soft tis

Papillary renal neoplasm with reverse polarity: A case report.

Papillary renal neoplasm with reverse polarity is a rare, newly identified subtype of papillary renal cell carcinoma believed to originate from the distal renal tubules. It is characterized by distinct histomorphological features and an associated immunophenotype. Contrast-enhanced scans usually do not exhibit a rapid wash-in and wash-out enhancement pattern, and this tumor is generally associated with a favorable overall prognosis. This study reports a case of papillary renal neoplasm with reverse polarity in a male patient in his 50 s who was admitted with recurrent left lumbar pain and disc

NTRK rearranged spindle cell neoplasm of the uterine cervix: a rare case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase (NTRK) rearranged spindle cell neoplasm is an emerging group of molecularly defined rare soft tissue tumors, often presenting with a monotonous spindle cell morphology, infiltrative growth, and co-expression of S-100 and CD34 proteins by immunohistochemistry (IHC). Accurate diagnosis necessitates the combination of morphology, immunohistochemistry, and molecular test results, with next-generation sequencing (NGS) as the gold standard. We present a rare case of NTRK rearranged spindle cell neoplasm of the uterine cervix and review the literature

Case report: Solitary fibrous tumor of the kidney with a NAB2-STAT6 fusion gene.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare spindle cell neoplasm that mostly originates from the pleura, and accounts for only 2% of all soft tissue tumors. Moreover, the cases of SFT of the kidney are rarely reported. Here, we report a typical case of kidney SFT, which was consistent with other reported cases. This case further expands on existing diagnostic methods of SFT and explains the importance of STAT6 mutations in SFT. CASE SUMMARY: We report a typical case of SFT of the kidney. A 34-year-old woman presented to the urinary surgery department after physical examinations were s

Cutaneous undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma is a pleomorphic dermal sarcoma.

Pleomorphic dermal sarcoma is a cutaneous soft tissue sarcoma that presents as a rapidly enlarging tumor, typically on a sun-exposed location of elderly individuals. The neoplasm shares many similar features - clinical, pathologic, immunohistochemical and genomic - with atypical fibroxanthoma. However, adverse histologic characteristics (deep subcutaneous invasion, tumor necrosis, lymphovascular invasion, and/or perineural invasion) differentiate pleomorphic dermal sarcoma from atypical fibroxanthoma and may account for the more aggressive biologic behavior of pleomorphic dermal sarcoma: local

Primary solitary fibrous tumor of the thyroid gland: A review starting from a case report.

Primary solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the thyroid gland is a rare mesenchymal tumor with fibroblastic differentiation, ramified, thin-walled, enlarged (staghorn) vessels and specific NAB2-STAT6 gene fusion, which is more commonly found in pleura and peritoneum. This neoplasm can be located in a variety of anatomical sites outside pleura and peritoneum including bone, visceral organs and soft tissues, head and neck examples representing only 10-15% of the extra-pleural and extra-peritoneal tumors. Diagnosing this entity can be difficult, especially in thyroid gland, mainly because of the rari

Case report and literature review: cardiac tamponade as a complication of pericardial extramedullary hematopoiesis.

Pericardial effusion can cause cardiac tamponade physiology with resultant cardiogenic shock and death. Myelofibrosis, the replacement of marrow cavity by fibrous connective tissue, is a secondary complication of a group of disorders known as myeloproliferative neoplasms, which are clonal processes characterized by abnormal proliferative growth of one or more hematopoietic lineages. One consequence of myelofibrosis is the development of hematopoiesis at other anatomic sites, most commonly the spleen and liver, a phenomenon known as extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH). Herein we report a case of

Lines of cell differentiation in solitary fibrous tumor: an ultrastructural and immunohistochemical study of 10 cases.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare ubiquitous mesenchymal neoplasm of probable fibroblastic type with a prominent hemangiopericytoma-like vascular pattern. Since their initial description as arising from the pleura, SFTs have been reported in many extraserosal sites. It is now accepted that this neoplasm is derived from mesenchymal cells but its histogenesis is still not known. METHODS: The authors gathered clinical data on 10 patients with SFT. Tissue microarrays were constructed to perform inmunohistochemical tests and we reviewed hematoxilin-eosin-stained slides. Electron-m

[Recurrence of a Desmoid Tumour in a Scar at the Donor Site of a Latissimus Dorsi Flap].

A desmoid tumour, also known as aggressive fibrous tumour or desmoid fibromatosis, is a rare, benign tumour originating from connective tissue cells. Desmoid tumours account for approximately 0.03+% of all neoplasms and less than 3+% of all soft tissue tumours. The estimated incidence in the general population is 2 to 4 cases per million people per year [1]. Desmoid tumours are characterised by aggressive growth but typically do not metastasize. They often occur in young adults and preferably affect specific body regions such as the abdomen, shoulder, chest, or extremities. The exact cause of

Hamartoma of the breast in two patients: A case report.

Breast hamartomas are rare, benign, tumor-like nodules composed of glandular, adipose and fibrous tissue. The hamartoma was first described in 1971 as a lipofibroadenoma, fibroadenolipoma or adenolipoma, based on the predominant component of the breast tissue. Clinical findings resemble fibroadenoma and if there is a palpable mass, the patients may receive an immediate diagnosis. Ductal hyperplasia, apocrine metaplasia, calcification and adenosis may occur within the hamartoma, with rarer instances of lobular or ductal intraepithelial neoplasms. Although hamartoma is usually benign, a malignan

Primary cutaneous solitary fibrous tumor with entrapped eccrine components.

First described in the pleura, solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) was subsequently reported in a variety of organ systems. Compared to other anatomic sites, primary cutaneous and superficial SFTs are relatively rare. Although several histopathologic variants of cutaneous and superficial SFT have been described, a primary cutaneous SFT harboring glandular components has not hitherto been documented in the literature. The current case report describes a spindle cell neoplasm of the right finger in a female patient with characteristic morphologic and immunohistochemical features of a SFT. Unexpectedly,

Osteogenic sarcoma and soft tissue myxoma in a patient with fibrous dysplasia and hemoglobins JBaltimore and S.

A 41-year-old man with recognized polyostotic fibrous dysplasia since late childhood developed fibroblastic osteogenic sarcoma in the left tibia. Four months after the initial diagnosis, an intramuscular myxoma was discovered in the left thigh. Twenty years previously he had been found to be heterozygous for hemoglobins JBaltimore and S. Malignant transformation in fibrous dysplasia is unusual and may be associated in some individuals with prior irradiation. Soft tissue myxomas associated with fibrous dysplasia are even rarer. To the best of the authors' knowledge the occurrence of both of the

Intraneural Pseudoperineuriomatous Proliferations and Traumatic Neuromas: A Retrospective Multicenter Study of Clinicopathological Characteristics.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Described in 2013, intraneural pseudoperineuriomatous proliferations (IPP) present perineurial cells concentrically surrounding the axon-Schwann cell complexes, forming pseudo-onion bulbs. Different from intraneural perineuriomas, rare neoplasms with differentiation of perineural cells, IPP are reactive, associated with fibrosis, and frequently diagnosed histologically as traumatic neuroma (TN). The aim of this study was to characterize IPP by exploring its clinicopathological features and differentiating it from the main neural lesions that are part of the histopatholo

New developments in the pathology of skull base tumors.

As an anatomical interface between various tissues, the skull base harbors an exceptionally broad variety of neoplasms, some of which pose a major challenge for surgical pathology. The characterization of distinct immunohistochemical expression profiles and the identification of molecular genetic alterations associated with different tumor entities have significantly advanced this field. The new World Health Organization (WHO) classification of tumors of the nervous system lists 15 histopathological variants of meningioma. Of clinical importance are those entities that carry an increased risk
