Patterns and short term neurosurgical treatment outcomes of neonates with neural tube defects admitted to Felege Hiwot Specialized Hospital, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Neural tube defects (NTDs) account for the largest proportion of congenital anomalies of the central nervous system and result from failure of the neural tube to close spontaneously between the 3rd and 4th weeks of in utero development. Prognosis and treatment outcome depends on the nature and the pattern of the defect. The nature of treatment outcomes and its pattern associated with grave prognosis is not well known in the study area. OBJECTIVE: The aim of study was to determine the patterns and short term neurosurgical management outcomes of newborns with neural tube defects adm

Current analysis of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy research issues and future treatment modalities.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is the leading cause of long-term neurological disability in neonates and adults. Through bibliometric analysis, we analyzed the current research on HIE in various countries, institutions, and authors. At the same time, we extensively summarized the animal HIE models and modeling methods. There are various opinions on the neuroprotective treatment of HIE, and the main therapy in clinical is therapeutic hypothermia, although its efficacy remains to be investigated. Therefore, in this study, we discussed the progress of neural circuits, injured brain tissue,

Towards a neural network based therapy for hallucinatory disorders.

Pattern completion in a neural network model of the thalamus and a biologically plausible model of synaptic plasticity are the key concepts used in this paper for analyzing some cognitive disorders that involve hallucinations of several kinds: visual hallucinations in the Charles Bonnet syndrome and psychedelic drugs consumption, somatic hallucination in phantom limbs, cognitive hallucinations in schizophrenia and even in multiple personality disorders. All these types of hallucinations are proposed to be the result of a pattern completion dynamics performed in thalamic deafferented areas. Eff

The effect of stimulus intensity on neural envelope tracking.

Objectives In recent years, there has been significant interest in recovering the temporal envelope of a speech signal from the neural response to investigate neural speech processing. The research focus is now broadening from neural speech processing in normal-hearing listeners towards hearing-impaired listeners. When testing hearing-impaired listeners, speech has to be amplified to resemble the effect of a hearing aid and compensate for peripheral hearing loss. Today it is not known with certainty how or if neural speech tracking is influenced by sound amplification. As these higher intensit

Spina bifida, the normal, the pathological and the in-between: first evidence from a forensic osteological collection.

Spina bifida (SB), a rare congenital disorder, is often mentioned as an individualizing factor in Forensic Anthropology. A lack of empirical data regarding SB is noticed in the scientific literature. Moreover, within the scope of anthropological research on SB disparities in terminology, classification systems, and methodological approaches result in incomparable results. The wide range (1,2%-50%) of "spina bifida occulta" reported prevalences is a good example. This research aims to analyze and debate the standard diagnostic criteria of SB on human skeletal remains, and attempts to elaborate

Automatic gain control of neural coupling during cooperative hand movements.

Cooperative hand movements (e.g. opening a bottle) are controlled by a task-specific neural coupling, reflected in EMG reflex responses contralateral to the stimulation site. In this study the contralateral reflex responses in forearm extensor muscles to ipsilateral ulnar nerve stimulation was analyzed at various resistance and velocities of cooperative hand movements. The size of contralateral reflex responses was closely related to the level of forearm muscle activation required to accomplish the various cooperative hand movement tasks. This indicates an automatic gain control of neural coup

Chlorpromazine Increases the Expression of Polysialic Acid (PolySia) in Human Neuroblastoma Cells and Mouse Prefrontal Cortex.

The neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) is modified by polysialic acid (polySia or PSA) in embryonic brains. In adult brains, polySia modification of NCAM is only observed in restricted areas where neural plasticity, remodeling of neural connections, or neural generation is ongoing although the amount of NCAM remains unchanged. Impairments of the polySia-expression and several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the polysialyltransferase (polyST) ST8SIA2 gene are reported to be associated with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Chlorpromazine (CPZ) is well-known as an agent for treatin

Time-frequency analysis of neuronal populations with instantaneous resolution based on noise-assisted multivariate empirical mode decomposition.

BACKGROUND: Linear analysis has classically provided powerful tools for understanding the behavior of neural populations, but the neuron responses to real-world stimulation are nonlinear under some conditions, and many neuronal components demonstrate strong nonlinear behavior. In spite of this, temporal and frequency dynamics of neural populations to sensory stimulation have been usually analyzed with linear approaches. NEW METHOD: In this paper, we propose the use of Noise-Assisted Multivariate Empirical Mode Decomposition (NA-MEMD), a data-driven template-free algorithm, plus the Hilbert tr

Ribosomal modifications are associated with mesenchymal fate selection in the neural crest lineage.

Neural crest cells contribute to craniofacial formation by differentiating into skeletogenic mesenchyme and neuro-glial lineages. Using Smart-seq2 single-cell transcriptomics, we show that mesenchymal fate commitment correlates specifically with the expression of rRNA-modifying and ribosome assembly factors, rather than structural ribosomal proteins. Notably, EMG1 and NHP2 introduce key post-transcriptional modifications into 18S rRNA, including m¹acp³ψ at U1248, which requires TSR3 for final maturation. Disrupting NHP2 or TSR3 in vitro and in vivo perturbs cranial neural crest differentiation

Spatio-temporal differences in EEG dynamics during decision-making between online poker players with moderate-risk and high-risk gambling activity.

Problem gamblers (PG) are often treated as a uniform group, though they vary in severity—moderate-risk (MR) and high-risk (HR)—as classified by the Canadian Problem Gambling Index (CPGI). This study investigated whether brain responses during uncertain decision-making differ by gambling severity. We hypothesized that the HR group would show distinct neural activity during outcome processing. A homogeneous sample of online poker players with PG was recruited and divided into MR (n = 15) and HR (n = 14) groups. Participants performed the Iowa Gambling Task while undergoing high-density EEG recor

The precuneus may encode irrationality in human gambling.

Humans often make irrational decisions, especially psychiatric patients who have dysfunctional cognitive and emotional circuitry. Understanding the neural basis of decision-making is therefore essential towards patient management, yet current studies suffer from several limitations. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies in humans have dominated decision-making neuroscience, but have poor temporal resolution and the blood oxygenation level-dependent signal is only a proxy for neural activity. On the other hand, lesion studies in humans used to infer functionality in decision-maki

Infantile hemangiomas exhibit neural crest and pericyte markers.

Infantile hemangiomas (IHs) are the most common benign tumors of infancy and occur with greater than 60% prevalence on the head and neck. Despite their prevalence, little is known about the pathogenesis of this disease. Given the predilection of hemangioma incidence on the face and its nonrandom distribution on embryological fusion plates, we postulated that IHs are derived from pericytes of the neural crest. We performed an analysis on 15 specimens at various stages of the IH progression. Experiments performed included immunohistochemical staining, immunofluorescent staining, quantitative rea

Single-interface bioelectronic medicines-concept, clinical applications and preclinical data.

Presently, large groups of patients with various diseases are either intolerant, or irresponsive to drug therapies and also intractable by surgery. For several diseases, one option which is available for such patients is the implantable neurostimulation therapy. However, lacking closed-loop control and selective stimulation capabilities, the present neurostimulation therapies are not optimal and are therefore used as only 'third' therapeutic options when a disease cannot be treated by drugs or surgery. Addressing those limitations, a next generation class of closed-loop controlled and selectiv

Modified Xiaoyaosan reverses aberrant brain regional homogeneity to exert antidepressive effects in mice.

The aim of this study is to explore the macroscale neural mechanisms of the antidepressant effects of Xiaoyaosan, a traditional Chinese herbal formula. We analyzed blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging signals. To further minimize the hemodynamic variations of BOLD signals and analyze the intra-region neural activity or temporal coherence, we employed the newly developed regional homogeneity (ReHo) approach to determine aberrant functional connectivity using the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) mouse model of depression and to also explore the brain-
