ERK1/2 Activation in Preexisting Oligodendrocytes of Adult Mice Drives New Myelin Synthesis and Enhanced CNS Function.

UNLABELLED: Growing evidence shows that mechanisms controlling CNS plasticity extend beyond the synapse and that alterations in myelin can modify conduction velocity, leading to changes in neural circuitry. Although it is widely accepted that newly generated oligodendrocytes (OLs) produce myelin in the adult CNS, the contribution of preexisting OLs to functional myelin remodeling is not known. Here, we show that sustained activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2) in preexisting OLs of adult mice is sufficient to drive increased myelin thickness, faster conduction sp

[A case of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type I with optic atrophy, neural deafness and pyramidal tract signs].

A case of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN) type I with optic atrophy, neural deafness and pyramidal tract signs was described. The patient was a 53-year-old man who had suffered from difficulty in walking, decreased visual acuity since age 16 years. These symptoms were slowly progressive. At the age of 37, he was pointed out optic atrophy, positive pyramidal tract signs. Distal muscle weakness with atrophy of four limbs was prominent at the age of 50. Since then, he noticed progressive hearing loss with blindness. His elder sister was diagnosed Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. On neu

Theoretical evaluation of the Rosenblueth hypothesis.

Rosenblueth's hypothesis states that atrioventricular (AV) nodal conduction delay and Wenckebach periodicity of AV transmission are not due to overall decremental conduction within the AV node but are due to a single step delay which is caused by a special element or layer of the AV nodal tissue. This paper discusses some theoretical considerations which allow detailed evaluation of the original hypothesis. Two artificial conduction structures which incorporate the Rosenblueth phenomenon are presented and tested by theoretical experiments that consider the potential of these structures to prod

[Reactions of neurons in the reticular and ventral anterior thalamic nuclei to stimulation of the ventrolateral nucleus of the thalamus and motor cortex].

Responses of 137 neurons located in oral parts of reticular (R) and ventral anterior (VA) thalamic nuclei to electrical stimulation of the ventrolateral nucleus (VL) and motor cortex (MI) were studied in 17 cats immobilized with d-tubocurarine. 10.5% of the investigated neurons responded to VL stimulation by antidromic spike (latency 0.7--3.0 ms). 11.0% of the neurons responded antidromically to MI stimulation (latency 0.4--4.0 ms). Neurons with axon sending one branch to VL and the other to MI were found. 78.9% of the neurons responded to VL stimulation with orthodromic excitation (after stim

Central motor conduction time.

Central motor conduction time (CMCT) is the time taken for neural impulses to travel through the central nervous system on their way to the target muscles. When the motor cortex is stimulated with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), CMCT is calculated by subtracting the peripheral conduction time from the motor evoked potential latency elicited by motor cortical TMS. CMCT in infants and children reaches adult level at about age of 6 years for the lower limbs. The alterations of CMCT in various neurological conditions are reviewed in this chapter. Prolongation of CMCT occurs due to slowing

Use of dexamethasone with TTX block of nerve conduction shows that muscle membrane properties are fully controlled by evoked activity.

This paper provides further evidence that motorneurons control extrajunctional properties of skeletal muscles through the activity evoked in the muscle fibres. The experiments compare the amount of action potential resistance to tetrodotoxin (TTX resistance) in denervated soleus muscle with that in soleus whose nerve was crushed and then allowed to regenerate in the presence of a block of the sciatic impulse conduction. Measurements were taken after about 2-3 weeks to allow full reinnervation and recovery of trophic regulation by the nerve. Blocking sciatic impulse conduction with TTX solution

Conduction Disorders in the Setting of Acute STEMI.

ST-elevation myocardial (STEMI) is frequently associated with conduction disorders. Regional myocardial ischemia or injury may affect the cardiac conduction system at various locations, and neural reflexes or changes in the balance of the autonomous nervous system may be involved. Sinoatrial and atrioventricular blocks are more frequent in inferior than anterior STEMI, while new left anterior fascicular block and right bundle branch block indicate proximal occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery. New left bundle branch block is associated with multi-vessel disease. Most condu

Automatic classification of heartbeats using neural network classifier based on a Bayesian framework.

This paper presents a method of automatic processing the electrocardiogram (ECG) signal for the classification of heart beats. Data were obtained from 48 records of the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database (only one lead). Five types of arrhythmic beats were classified using our method, Premature Ventricular Conduction beat (PVC), Atrial Premature Conduction beat (APC), Right Bundle Branch Block beat (RBBB), Left Bundle Branch Block beat (LBBB), and Paced Rhythm Beat (PRB), in addition to the Normal Beat (NB). A learning dataset for the neural network was obtained from a five records set (124, 214, 111

Investigation of electroneuromyography parameters of axillary and accessory nerves in long-term motorcycle riders.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Long-term motorcycle use may lead to various health problems, such as musculoskeletal disorders and peripheral nerve compression. This study aims to evaluate the effects of prolonged motorcycle use on the peripheral nervous system. METHODS: Electroneuromyography (ENMG) data for the axillary nerve and accessory nerve were compared between motorcycle users and non-users. The study included 50 volunteers who had been actively riding motorcycles for at least five years and 50 individuals who did not use motorcycles. Anthropometric measurements were also recorded, and nerve

Tendinopathy Pain Mimicking Neuropathy on Nerve Conduction Study Resolved with Ultrasound-Guided Steroid Injection Treatment: A Case Report.

We describe the case of a 41-year-old Asian man who was initially given a diagnosis of peroneal neuropathy but who later received a diagnosis of tenosynovitis of extensor digitorum longus (EDL). The patient initially presented with left lateral ankle numbness, pain, and decreased range of dorsiflexion after an 8-km walk. Peroneal neuropathy was first diagnosed on the basis of reduced compound muscle action potential (CMAP). Conversely, ankle ultrasound revealed normal peroneal nerve but considerable EDL tenosynovitis. Ultrasound-guided injection of triamcinolone and lidocaine into the tendon s

Mechanical hyperventilation: effect on specialized atrioventricular conduction, supraventricular refractoriness, and experimental atrial arrhythmias in dogs anesthetized with pentobarbital or pentobarbital-halothane.

The effect of hypocapnia (PCO2ET 25 vs 40 torr) on specialized atrioventricular (AV) conduction, supraventricular refractory periods, and experimental atrial arrhythmias provoked by premature atrial stimulation (atrial echoes-echoes, repetitive atrial firing (RAF)) was assessed in dogs anesthetized with pentobarbital or pentobarbital-halothane (1.0% end-tidal). Catheter His bundle electrocardiography was used. Both hypocapnia and halothane prolonged AV nodal conduction, but the effect of halothane was more pronounced. Halothane prolonged the atrial functional (AtFRP), atrial effective (AtERP),

High Resolution 3-T Magnetic Resonance Tractography Cannot Localise Conduction Block in Multifocal Motor Neuropathy With Conduction Block.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Definite diagnosis of multifocal motor neuropathy with conduction block (MMNCB) requires identification of electrophysiological motor conduction block (CB), which is sometimes challenging to demonstrate. Magnetic resonance (MR) neurography is recommended as a supportive diagnostic criterion. Brachial plexus short tau inversion recovery (STIR) hyperintensity is described in MMNCB but the utility of tractography (DTI) is less well understood. We sought evidence for the utility of DTI and STIR parameters of MMNCB forearm nerve segments with clear NCS-demonstrated CB, which co

Transtympanic and surface recordings in the diagnosis of retrocochlear disorders.

A series of patients presenting with subsequently surgically confirmed central tumour involving the auditory pathways were investigated using both transtympanic electrocochleography (TT ECochG) and surface recordings of brainstem evoked responses (BER). While ECochG allows a detailed study of peripheral function, BER allow the investigation of neural conduction up to the level of the inferior colliculus. Valuable information can be obtained from: (1) comparison of the amplitudes of the sensory and neural components of the ECochG; (2) comparison of ECochG, BER and auditory thresholds; (3) time

Auditory brainstem evoked potentials in evaluating the central effects of middle ear effusion.

Auditory brainstem evoked potentials (ABEP) were recorded to determine whether children who suffered in the past, or suffered at time of examination from Secretory otitis media (S.O.M.), exhibited slowed conduction along their auditory brainstem. Five groups of subjects were examined: children with active S.O.M. during the examination, children with S.O.M. in the past who were treated non-surgically and recovered, children with S.O.M. in the past who were treated surgically and recovered, children who were treated by insertion of ventilating tubes (V.T.), and had S.O.M. during the examination

Reversing Effect of Insulin on Local Anesthetics-Induced Sciatic Nerve Block in Rats.

BACKGROUND: Local anesthetics are used in various purposes from topical and infiltration anesthesia to peripheral nerve or central neural blockade. Even though local anesthetics are relatively safe, they can have some toxic and adverse effects. Prolonged sensory and motor block is another example of an unwanted complication. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether insulin has a reversal effect on the peripheral (sciatic) nerve block with lidocaine or bupivacaine. METHODS: The surgically exposed sciatic nerves in rats were blocked with lidocaine or bupivacaine, and then 0.

Ramped kilohertz-frequency signals produce nerve conduction block without onset response.

Objective.Reversible block of peripheral nerve conduction using kilohertz-frequency (KHF) electrical signals has substantial potential for treating diseases. However, onset response, i.e. KHF-induced excitation en route to producing nerve block, is an undesired outcome of neural block protocols. Previous studies of KHF nerve block observed increased onset responses when KHF signal amplitude was linearly ramped for up to 60 s at frequencies up to 30 kHz. Here, we evaluated the onset response across a broad range of ramp durations and frequencies.Approach. In experiments on the rat tibial nerve

The effect of surgical medicaments on peripheral nerve function.

Surgical medicaments are often placed in close proximity to peripheral nerves and may be responsible for some postoperative sensory disturbances. In this study we investigated the effect of four medicaments -- BIPP, (bismuth iodoform paraffin paste), Whitehead's varnish (compound iodoform paint), Surgicel (oxidized regenerated cellulose) and Carnoy's solution (ethanol, chloroform and acetic acid) -- on peripheral nerve function. The experiments were carried out on the saphenous nerve in anaesthetized adult rats. Electrical stimuli (30 V, 0.1 ms duration) were applied to the saphenous nerve thr

Advances in auditory implants.

Auditory implants are classified into bone conduction (BAHA and Bonebridge; BB) and active middle ear implants (Vibrant Soundbridge; VSB) that stimulate cochlear hair cells, and cochlear implants (CIs) that stimulate neural structures. CIs should be performed as early as possible, and bilateral CIs have become popular because sound localization and speech recognition can be improved. CI is also considered a desirable treatment option for patients with single-sided deafness. VSB provides a safe and effective option for patients with conductive or mixed hearing loss and moderate to severe sensor
