The sympathetic and parasympathetic systems both contain efferent and afferent neurons. The efferent pathway consists of preganglionic neurons with myelinated axons the cell bodies of which are within the central nervous system and postganglionic neurons with unmyelinated axons the cell bodies of which are peripheral. The preganglionic sympathetic fibers arise in the intermediolateral column of the thoracic and upper lumber cord segments, and reach the sympathetic chain whence postganglionic fibers are distributed to the whole body, where they have particular influence on the control of blood

By methods of histochemical marking of NADPH-diaphorase and immunohistochemical marking of cystathionine-beta-synthase (CBS), the presence and distribution of NO and H2S-synthesizing elements in thoracic ganglion are shown in two crab species Eriocheir japonicus and Pugettia quadreidens. In the thoracic ganglion, NO and H2S have been established to be synthesized by different neurons. The high CBS activity in efferent elements--segmentary motoneurons, interneurons, and nerve fibers in the extremity neuropil--indicates involvement of hydrogen sulfide in organization of the crustacean motor beha

Orexin A and orexin B (also known as hypocretin 1 and hypocretin 2) are hypothalamic neuropeptides that we discovered thirteen years ago. Initially, these peptides were recognized as regulators of feeding behavior. Subsequently, several studies suggested that orexin deficiency causes narcolepsy in humans and other mammalian species, highlighting roles of this hypothalamic neuropeptide in the regulation of sleep and wakefulness. Studies of efferent and afferent systems of orexin-producing neurons have shown that the orexin neuronal system has close interactions with systems that regulate emotio

Aim of the present study was to locate the neurons projecting to the lamb retractor penis muscle, a smooth muscle associated to the penis. The retrograde neuronal tracer Fast Blue was injected into the bulbopenile portion of the left retractor penis muscle. Labelled cells were found bilaterally in the S2-S4 spinal ganglia, from the last two lumbar (L5-L6 or L6-L7) to S4 sympathetic trunk ganglia and in the hypogastric and pelvic plexuses. Fast blue-positive (FB+) neurons were also found in the intermediate gray substance in the S1-S4 segments of the spinal cord. Our research enables us to desc

The localization and morphometric features of efferent parasympathetic neurons of the vagus dorsal motor nucleus and of the spinal sacral parasympathetic nucleus innervating the area of ileocaecal sphincter, ascending and transverse colon, were investigated. In urethane anaesthetized cats, the solution of horseradish peroxidase was injected under the serosa of the indicated areas of colon. In 48 hours animals were transcardially perfused with a fixative solution. Sections of the medulla oblongata and the sacral spinal cord were stained using Mezulam's technique (1978). It was shown that all th

Previous studies have shown that daily, moderate-level sound exposure, or conditioning, can reduce injury from a subsequent high-level noise exposure. We tested the hypothesis that this conditioning produces an increased activity in the olivocochlear efferent reflex, a reflex known to provide protection to the cochlea. Guinea pigs were conditioned by a 10-day intermittent exposure to 2-4 kHz noise at 85 dB sound pressure level. This conditioning is known to reduce damage from a subsequent high-level exposure to the same noise band. Responses to monaural and binaural sound were recorded from si

It has been shown by L. Collet in 1990 that the contralateral noise stimulation causes the decrease in the amplitude of otoacoustic emissions in the ipsilateral (tested) ear. This effect is linked to the activation of crossed efferent fibres in the cochlea. This non-invasive method is becoming a useful tool in assessing the function of efferent system in human. In this study the effect of contralateral noise stimulation was assessed in 10 young subjects with normal hearing. The contralateral stimulation caused the decrease in the amplitude of both transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE)

Lateral olivocochlear (LOC) efferent neurons modulate auditory nerve fiber (ANF) activity using a large repertoire of neurotransmitters, including dopamine (DA) and acetylcholine (ACh). Little is known about how individual neurotransmitter systems are differentially utilized in response to the ever-changing acoustic environment. Here we present quantitative evidence in rodents that the dopaminergic LOC input to ANFs is dynamically regulated according to the animal's recent acoustic experience. Sound exposure upregulates tyrosine hydroxylase, an enzyme responsible for dopamine synthesis, in cho

1. The effects of efferent electric pelvic nerve stimulation on colorectal motility and blood flow with emphasis on the motor responses in consecutive colonic and rectal segments were studied in anaesthetized cats. It was considered of particular interest to explore whether selective pharmacological blockade and graded nerve stimulations might reveal the presence of functionally differentiated efferent fibres controlling colonic motility.2. Pelvic nerve stimulation induced immediate and sustained colorectal contractions and a simultaneous increase of the over-all colonic blood flow. The excita

INTRODUCTION: Inflammation is an inherently self-amplifying process, resulting in progressive tissue damage when unresolved. A brake on this positive feedback system is provided by the nervous system which has evolved to detect inflammatory signals and respond by activating anti-inflammatory processes, including the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway mediated by the vagus nerve. Acute pancreatitis, a common and serious condition without effective therapy, develops when acinar cell injury activates intrapancreatic inflammation. Prior study has shown that electrical stimulation of the carotid

Electrophysiological investigations in a patient with progressive autonomic failure revealed selective damage to the somatic efferent innervation of the external urinary sphincter musculature, implying selective vulnerability of the motoneurons of Onuf's nucleus in the sacral cord. This vulnerability contrasts with the selective resistance of these motoneurons to degeneration in motor neuron disease.

Processing of sound in the cochlea involves both afferent and efferent innervation. The Na,K-ATPase (NKA) is essential for cells that maintain hyperpolarized membrane potentials and sodium and potassium concentration gradients. Heterogeneity of NKA subunit expression is one mechanism that tailors physiology to particular cellular demands. Therefore, to provide insight into molecular differences that distinguish the various innervation pathways in the cochlea, we performed a variety of double labeling experiments with antibodies against three of the alpha isoforms of the NKA (NKA alpha 1-3) and

The effects of single electrical shocks to myelinated A and unmyelinated C afferent fibers of perineal and limb somatic nerves on the reflex discharges in pelvic parasympathetic (L6/S1) efferent nerves to the bladder were examined in anesthetized central nervous system (CNS)-intact and acute spinal rats. When the bladder was empty, stimulation of perineal somatic inputs to the L6 and S1 segments from the perineo-femoral branch of a pudendal nerve produced excitatory A- and C-reflex discharge components in postganglionic parasympathetic efferent nerve branches on the bladder surface. Orexins, which were initially identified as endogenous peptide ligands for two orphan G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs), have been shown to have an important role in the regulation of energy homeostasis. Furthermore, the discovery of orexin deficiency in narcolepsy patients indicated that orexins are highly important factors for the sleep/wakefulness regulation. The efferent and afferent systems of orexin-producing neurons suggest interactions between these cells and arousal centers in the brainstem as well as important feeding centers in the hypothalamus. Electrophysiological studies have s

The contribution of hypothalamic histamine neurons to the central regulation of peripheral lipid metabolism was investigated in rats using in vivo microdialysis system. A bolus infusion of L-histamine at doses of 10--10(3) nmol/rat into the third cerebral ventricle (i3vt) dose-dependently increased glycerol concentration in the perfusate from the epididymal adipose tissue. I3vt infusion of 10(2) nmol/rat thioperamide, an autoinhibitory H(3) receptor antagonist that activates histamine neurons to increase synthesis and release of neuronal histamine, convincingly mimicked histamine action in the

The anterior cortical (C1) and posterolateral cortical (C2) nuclei of the amygdala are designated the "olfactory amygdala" because they each receive direct projections from the main olfactory bulb. The efferents of these nuclei were traced after stereotaxic placement of 1-5 muCi tritiated proline in the corticomedial amygdala of the male golden hamsters. Following survival times of 12, 24, or 48 hours, 20 micron frozen sections of the brains were processed for light microscopic autoradiography. Efferents from C2 terminate in layers II and III of the olfactory tubercle and in layer Ib of pars v

The carotid labyrinth is an enigmatic endocrine structure of unknown chemosensory function lying in the gill region of the catfishes. The carotid body is found at the carotid bifurcation of amphibians and all mammalian vertebrates on the evolutionary tree. It is a vascular expansion comprised of a cluster of glomus cells with associated (afferent and efferent) innervations. In the catfish species studied (Clarias batrachus) a neurosecretory cell system consisting of pseudobranchial neurosecretory cells connect the carotid labyrinth or large vessels (both the efferent branchial artery and dorsa

Acute kidney injury is highly prevalent and associated with high morbidity and mortality, and there are no approved drugs for its prevention and treatment. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) alleviates inflammatory diseases including kidney disease; however, neural circuits involved in VNS-induced tissue protection remain poorly understood. The vagus nerve, a heterogeneous group of neural fibers, innervates numerous organs. VNS broadly stimulates these fibers without specificity. We used optogenetics to selectively stimulate vagus efferent or afferent fibers. Anterograde efferent fiber stimulation
