Sinonasal small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma: a systematic review of 80 patients.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to review the published literature related to sinonasal small cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (SCNECs). Clinical presentation, demographics, treatment, and outcomes of this uncommon disease are reported. METHODS: A systematic review of studies for sinonasal SCNECs in PubMed and Ovid databases from 1970 to 2014 was conducted. Bibliographies of selected articles were also examined. Articles were examined for patient data that reported disease outcome. RESULTS: Thirty-four articles were included in this analysis, comprising a total of 80 cases. The mea

The zygomatic flap: a further possibility in reconstructing soft-tissue defects of the nose and upper lip.

Through the dissection and localization of the cutaneous zygomatic branch, as previously described by the authors, a vessel is available that plays an important role in reconstructive surgery. The performance of this anatomical study has enabled designing of the so-called zygomatic flap, which can be considered as a further possibility in the reconstruction of soft-tissue defects of the upper lip and nose. This new island axial pattern flap provides a reliable source of skin, with color match for facial resurfacing, and leaves a well-hidden donor site similar to that of the nasolabial flap. Th

The Single Application of External V-Y Plasty in Correcting Alar Retraction.

With the rising incidence of basal cell carcinoma, postoperative deformities following Mohs surgery have become increasingly prevalent. Among these, alar retraction represents a particularly challenging complication. Current approaches to its correction have largely centered on grafting techniques, which are often complex and may necessitate multidisciplinary collaboration. External V-Y plasty, by facilitating soft tissue lengthening and tension release, presents a straightforward and effective alternatives for correcting alar retraction, offering favorable aesthetic outcomes.

Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the skin with apparent origin in the epidermis--a pattern or an entity? A case report.

BACKGROUND: Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) is prototypically represented by "undifferentiated" nasopharyngeal carcinoma, but it has also been described in many other anatomic locations, including the skin. In the last of these sites, primary LELC has been assumed in the past to show dermal adnexal differentiation. METHODS: The authors present a case wherein LELC of the skin (LELCS) instead appeared to be a morphologic manifestation of squamous carcinoma of the skin surface, as supported by the results of immunohistology and in situ hybridization. RESULTS: Like other examples of LELC

Biphasic pulses enhance bleomycin efficacy in a spontaneous canine genital tumor model of chemoresistance: Sticker sarcoma.

Sticker's sarcoma (also known as transmissible venereal tumor) is a horizontally transmitted neoplasm of the dog, that is passed with coitus. It is a locally aggressive tumor with a low tendency to metastatic spread. The most common locations are the genitals, the nose, the perianal area. Standard treatment consists with chemotherapy with vincristine, however other therapies such as, cryotherapy, immunotherapy or, in selected cases, radiation therapy, have been reported. In this article we describe the outcome of a small cohort of canine patients, with chemotherapy resistant transmissible vene

Inverted papilloma invading the orbit through the nasolacrimal duct: a case report.

PURPOSE: Inverted papillomas of the nose and paranasal sinuses are uncommon neoplasms, characterized by their tendency to recur and by their association with malignancy and invasive potential to the adjacent structures. The authors report a case of recurrent inverted papilloma of the nasal cavity and sinuses that eventually invaded the orbit through the nasolacrimal duct. METHOD: Assessment and management of a 47-year-old patient who presented with epiphora, left medial canthal area mass, proptosis and lateral displacement of his left eye associated with significant nasal obstruction. RESULT

Primary Kaposi's sarcoma of the head and neck.

Kaposi's sarcoma is a cutaneous neoplasm commonly arising in the extremities, and rarely in the mucosa or skin of the head and neck. We discuss nine cases of Kaposi's sarcoma arising in the head and neck region, retrieved from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, together with 74 cases from the literature. The commonest mucosal locations include the conjunctiva, palate, tongue, tonsils, and gums; common cutaneous sites are the eyelids, nose, ears, and face. Prognosis, sex distribution, and susceptible population groups for the head and neck tumor are similar to those for the c

Some useful flaps for covering some defects in the nose.

For covering defects in the nose, the immediately adjacent skin is preferable for local flaps because it is better in color match and in healing. In this paper some useful local flaps for repair of defects in the nose are described and illustrated.

Recurrent TNC::PDGFD Fusions in Ossifying Plexiform Tumors of the Skin.

PDGFB or, more rarely, PDGFD rearrangements are well-established oncogenic drivers of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP). Recently, a TNC::PDGFD fusion has been identified in a superficial spindle cell tumor distinct from DFSP but similar to the tumor entity described as ossifying plexiform tumors of the skin. Herein, we report 7 additional cases of cutaneous ossifying plexiform tumors harboring a TNC::PDGFD fusion transcript. Four patients were female. Tumors were located on the nose (n = 2), hand (n = 2), forearm (n = 1), flank (n = 1), and foot (n = 1), with a median size of 6 (range, 4

Natural Killer (NK)//T-Cell Lymphoma, Nasal Type, with Periorbital Involvement: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND Extranodal natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphomas are rare neoplasms that result in the destruction of mid-facial tissues. Infrequently seen in ear, nose, and throat clinical practice, they are often misdiagnosed and treated as chronic sinusitis, which delays proper diagnosis. This study aimed to describe the insidious course of NK/T-cell lymphomas, nasal type. CASE REPORT A 36-year-old woman with a 2-year history of recurrent exacerbation of chronic sinusitis and allergies was admitted to our clinic. Multiple endoscopic sinus surgical procedures were performed. Repeated histopatholog

Second malignancies following treatment of chronic myeloid leukaemia in the tyrosine kinase inhibitor era.

Given that tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have dramatically improved the survival of patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML), we were interested in examining the possible risk of long-term adverse events, such as the emergence of other neoplasms. Therefore, we studied the development of second malignancies in 868 patients diagnosed with CML between 2002 and 2011 using the Swedish CML register, cross-linked to the Swedish Cancer register. With a median follow-up of 3·7 (range 0-9·9) years, 65 (7·5%) patients developed 75 second malignancies (non-haematological), 52 of which were of the

VITOM-3D assisted paramedian forehead flap for nasal reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: The study was designed with the purpose of showing the potential advantages of the VITOM-3D assisted paramedian forehead flap for nasal reconstruction. METHODS: A 72 years-old female patient presented to our department with a wide left nasal defect. On her clinical history she referred a basal cell carcinoma of the left nasal skin treated with multiple excision in another center without reconstruction. On clinical examination, we observed the absence of the left nasal tip, columella, upper lateral and lower lateral cartilage. In our experience the paramedian forehead flap based on
