The state of diet-related NCD policies in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Tunisia and Vietnam: a comparative assessment that introduces a 'policy cube' approach.

We assessed the technical content of sugar, salt and trans-fats policies in six countries in relation to the World Health Organization 'Best Buys' guidelines for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). National research teams identified policies and strategies related to promoting healthy diets and restricting unhealthy consumption, including national legislation, development plans and strategies and health sector-related policies and plans. We identified relevant text in relation to the issuing agency, overarching aims, goals, targets and timeframes, specific policy me

Nutrition inequities in the Deaf community: a call for inclusive public health action.

Research shows that understanding the nutritional status and eating habits of people with disabilities is essential for creating effective preventive healthcare strategies. Communication barriers in healthcare settings, low health literacy and socioeconomic inequities are among the challenges this community faces. These difficulties can lead to poor nutritional knowledge, food insecurity and chronic diseases. Deaf individuals also experience higher rates of undernutrition, obesity and micronutrient deficiencies, primarily due to limited access to linguistically appropriate nutrition education.

Quantitative techniques in 18FDG PET scanning in oncology.

Aging is an essential milestone that governments worldwide must plan for. At a global level, Japan currently has the highest share of population older than 65 years. Thus, the Japanese experience may be a useful guide to other countries as they consider their policies. Elderly individuals living alone encounter many challenges typically not faced by those living in a multiperson household. Nutrition status and diet are 2 such challenges, both of which are crucial determinants of health and well-being. The health and nutrition statuses as well as some other factors in elderly individuals living

Equity and Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Non-communicable diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases, are the leading cause of decreased life expectancy and death in Latin America and the Caribbean. Although a lifestyle, which includes no tobacco use, good nutrition, and regular physical activity is touted as key to health, the environmental, racial, social and economic conditions, which underpin lifestyle are often ignored or considered only secondarily. Placing the main responsibility on a patient to change their lifestyle or to simply comply with pharmacological treatment ignores the specific conditions in which the individual

Are Guideline Recommendations on Supportive Nutrition and Exercise Therapy for Cancer Patients Implemented in Clinical Routine? A National Survey with Real-Life Data.

Malnutrition and cancer cachexia are highly prevalent comorbidities of cancer, limiting patients' quality of life and being relevant to prognosis. International and national clinical guidelines recommend supportive nutrition and exercise therapy for cancer patients. However, there is little current epidemiological evidence on the implementation of these guideline recommendations in clinical routine. To close this data gap, a national survey in Germany using an online questionnaire was conducted. There were 261 of a total of 5074 contacted hospitals and medical offices who participated in the s

Position of the American Dietetic Association: Providing nutrition services for people with developmental disabilities and special health care needs.

It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that nutrition services provided by registered dietitians (RDs) and dietetic technicians, registered (DTRs), are essential components of comprehensive care for all people with developmental disabilities and special health care needs. Nutrition services should be provided throughout life in a manner that is interdisciplinary, family-centered, community-based, and culturally competent. People with developmental disabilities and special health care needs frequently have nutrition concerns, including growth alterations (failure to thrive, obe

Toward an integration model for sustainable school meals: a comparative policy review of five European countries.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: School food policies are increasingly recognized as strategic public health interventions that contribute not only to child nutrition but also to environmental sustainability and social resilience. Due to differences in legal frameworks, supply systems, and socio-cultural contexts, European countries have adopted various governance approaches to sustainable school meals. This study aims to comparatively examine how school-based sustainable nutrition policies are structured in five European countries with high SDGs Index scores and to develop an integrated policy framewor

How can the operating environment for nutrition research be improved in sub-Saharan Africa? The views of African researchers.

Optimal nutrition is critical for human development and economic growth. Sub-Saharan Africa is facing high levels of food insecurity and only few sub-Saharan African countries are on track to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger by 2015. Effective research capacity is crucial for addressing emerging challenges and designing appropriate mitigation strategies in sub-Saharan Africa. A clear understanding of the operating environment for nutrition research in sub-Saharan Africa is a much needed prerequisite. We collected data on the barriers and requirements for conducting nutrition research in su

Update of nutrition guidelines for the teen: trends and concerns.

Sociocultural influences are known to affect adolescent eating patterns and behaviors. Some teens reject a meat-based diet to become vegetarians; others take up dieting to lose weight or develop an eating disorder. Teens require increased nutrients to provide for the accelerated growth that takes place during these years. Nutritional deficiencies in adolescence can lead to loss of height, osteoporosis, and delayed sexual maturation. Sports also play an important role in many teens' lives. The desire to excel can lead to increased training and prolonged periods of dieting. Disordered eating, am

Delivering an action agenda for nutrition interventions addressing adolescent girls and young women: priorities for implementation and research.

Adolescent nutritional behaviors are assuming considerable importance in nutrition interventions given their important relationships with medium- and long-term outcomes. This is the period when young people undergo major anatomical and physiological maturational changes in preparation for adulthood. Nutritional requirements during puberty are higher during adolescence than during the prepubertal stage and during adulthood. A significant proportion of adolescents also become parents, and hence the importance of their health and nutritional status before as well as during pregnancy has its impac

Vitamin D: evolutionary, physiological and health perspectives.

Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, has been important not only for the evolution of a healthy calcified vertebrate skeleton but it also evolved into a hormone that has a wide diversity of biologic effects. During exposure to sunlight the ultraviolet B radiation converts 7-dehydrocholesterol to previtamin D(3) which in turn rapidly isomerizes to vitamin D(3). Once formed, vitamin D(3) is metabolized in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D(3) and in the kidneys to its active form 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3). 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) interacts with its vitamin D receptor in calcium regulating tissues

Counseling parents on feeding their children.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The high-nutrient needs of children for normal growth and development are matched by ready access to low-nutrient high-energy foods. Parents are often confused by new and at times conflicting information. This review discusses three recently published papers that offer specific and important dietary information for school-aged children. RECENT FINDINGS: Lactose intolerance is common in some populations and there are misconceptions about dairy intake. Most lactose-intolerant children can consume some dairy products without symptoms. Fruit-juice intake can predict increased w

Selenium in health and disease: a review.

Selenium (Se) was discovered 180 years ago. The toxicological properties of Se in livestock were recognized first; its essential nutritional role for animals was discovered in the 1950s and for humans in 1973. Only one reductive metabolic pathway of Se is well characterized in biological systems, although several naturally occurring inorganic and organic forms of the element exist. The amount of Se available for assimilation by the tissues is dependent on the form and concentration of the element. Se is incorporated into a number of functionally active selenoproteins, including the enzyme glut

Oral Health in Somalia: Unmasking a Neglected Dimension of Public Health.

Oral health is a fundamental but neglected component of public health, with important consequences for nutrition, communication, dignity, quality of life, and noncommunicable disease (NCD) prevention. In Somalia, oral health remains poorly integrated into health policy and service delivery within a context shaped by health-system fragility, displacement, humanitarian pressures, and limited workforce capacity. This perspective synthesizes available Somalia-specific evidence alongside modeled national estimates and relevant regional evidence to examine the burden, determinants, access barriers,

Research priorities for improved pandemic and epidemic intelligence.

Pandemic and epidemic intelligence integrates surveillance data with contextual knowledge to assess health risks and inform public health decisions. Although investments in surveillance and public health intelligence have accelerated innovation, research efforts remain thematically and geographically fragmented and the translation of insights into policy and practice is inconsistent. To address this gap, the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence, in collaboration with global partners, conducted a research prioritisation exercise to identify key research gaps and opportunities. Alignment of Food Policies and Cardiovascular Disease Burden: Insights from the Literature.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This narrative review aims to synthesize global literature on existing food policies relevant to cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention and assess their alignment with global CVD burden. RECENT FINDINGS: Mandatory food reformulation policies, particularly industrial trans-fat elimination and sodium reduction targets, demonstrate the strongest and most consistent impacts on population dietary risk factors and cardiovascular outcomes. Fiscal measures, notably sugar-sweetened beverage taxes, are associated with reduced purchases, product reformulation, and potential cardiomet
