The calcifying odontogenic cyst is as a benign, rare developmental odontogenic cyst with a wide range of histologic characteristics. It may present along with other odontogenic pathologies such as odontoma, ameloblastoma, adenomatoid odontogenic tumor, ameloblastic fibroma, and ameloblastic fibro-odontoma. Clinically, it can be an either intra- or extraosseous painless swelling that can produce cortical expansion. It affects mostly the anterior area of the mandible. Radiographically, it appears as a well-circumscribed unilocular radiolucency containing flecks of indistinct radiopacities. In ab

Clinical presentation of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) along with other pathologies of the jaw such as ameloblastoma, and ossifying fibroma is well documented. However, the simultaneous occurrence of OKC with lateral periodontal cyst (LPC) is very rare. We present a clinical scenario where there was concurrent presentation of OKC with LPC.

Glandular Odontogenic Cyst is a relatively rare cyst of odontogenic origin, which shows glandular or salivary features that are thought to indicate the pluripotentiality of odontogenic epithelium. It is seen in middle-aged adults, and commonly involves the anterior region of the jaws, especially the mandible. It shows non-specific clinico-radiographic findings which may resemble other lesions, but has characteristic histopathologic features which help in its diagnosis. This paper reports an unusual presentation of a glandular odontogenic cyst which was diagnosed in a 64-year old female in the

Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC) is a developmental cyst of jaw and was initially considered by the World Health Organization (1992) as the uncommon orthokeratinized variant of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC). However, studies have shown that OOC has peculiar clinicopathologic aspects when compared with other developmental odontogenic cysts, especially OKC. So orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst now stands out to be a distinct entity. Clinically, it occurs as a single cyst, shows a predilection for males and is most often found in the second to the fifth decade. Its bilateral occurrence is e…

Residual cysts are common odontogenic lesions of the tooth-bearing areas of the jaws. A case of an unusually large residual cyst that crosses the maxillary midline and occupies portions of the maxillary sinuses is being reported. Investigations included a panoramic radiograph, CT scan and a biopsy. The differential diagnoses were common odontogenic lesions, including cysts and benign tumors. The value of advanced imaging modalities is stressed when determining the presence and extent of lesions in complex structures such as the maxilla. The need to visualize the entire lesion beyond what may b

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumours (AOT) are uncommon odontogenic lesions characterized histologi-cally by duct-like structures derived from the epithelial component of the lesion and can be distinctly classified into follicular, extrafollicular and extraosseous variants (Neville BW, Damm DD, Allen CM, et al. Adenomatoid Odontogenic Tumor. A Text Book for Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, 2(nd) edition, 621-3). Most of these tumours develop in the second or third decade of life and have a distinct predilection for women. The follicular variant accounts for 75% of reported cases (Curran AE, Miller

Orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts (OOCs) are relatively uncommon developmental cysts lined with orthokeratinized epithelium consisting of a prominent granular layer and a basal layer of low cuboidal flattened cells that show no tendency for nuclear palisading. These cysts have been considered a distinct entity from odontogenic keratocysts since they exhibit a less aggressive behavior and a very low rate of recurrence. Developmental odontogenic cysts can become infected but serious complications, such as potentially life-threatening cellulitis, are rare. This report describes a rare case of fa…

PURPOSE: Odontogenic cysts are classified into a developmental group, including follicular cysts (FC) and keratocysts, and an inflammatory group including radicular cysts (RC). In clinical cases, we frequently encounter RC and FC. The purpose of this study was to investigate the cytobiological differences between two odontogenic cyst-lining keratinocytes using a cytobiological approach from the aspect of metabolic function and the degree of maturation of the epithelium.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Samples of odontogenic cyst-lining keratinocytes and oral keratinocytes collected at surgery, and of …

INTRODUCTION: In 1990, the WHO classified Polymorphous Low Grade Adenocarcinoma as a low-grade malignant tumor of the minor salivary glands. This tumor often originates from the hard or soft palate minor salivary glands. We report the first case revealed as an infected maxillary odontogenic cyst around an impacted tooth.
CASE REPORT: A 50-year-old female presented 20 months ago with a bulging, painful oral mass in the right superior vestibule. The diagnosis was infected odontogenic cyst associated with an impacted canine tooth. A course of oral antibiotics was given and cyst enucleation and t

This article describes a case of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) in a 1 year and 7 month old girl who presented such a lesion mimicking an eruption cyst. To date, only one well-documented OKC occurring in a patient under 5 years old has been reported and it was thought to be associated with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS). In our OKC case, the cyst was totally enucleated. No evidence of recurrence and NBCCS was found after a 4-year follow-up. The development of involving tooth in a growing child and the histogenesis of OKC are discussed in this article.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of lateral periodontal cyst (LPC) with marked melanin pigmentation in a 38-year-old Black male and to discuss the phenomenon of melanin pigmentation in odontogenic cysts and tumors.
RESULTS: Histologically, the epithelial lining of the LPC contained an abundant amount of melanin granules throughout the entire epithelium. Ultrastructurally, epithelial cells contained mature melanosomes (stage IV melanosomes). Melanophages containing aggregates of melanosomes were identified in the connective tissue cyst wall. Perusal of the literature revealed that melanin pigmentat…

The aim of this study was to investigate the reactivity of the epithelial linings of the three major types of odontogenic cyst with a monoclonal antibody to proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA; clone PC10). PCNA expression was studied in odontogenic cysts (n = 31) and normal oral epithelium (n = 10) using a biotin-streptavidin method on routinely processed paraffin sections. PCNA+ cells were counted manually and related to the length of basement membrane (mm) and the epithelial area (mm2) as determined by TV image analysis. The epithelial linings of odontogenic keratocysts (OKC; n = 11) c…

This study reviews and analyzes the clinical, radiographic, and histomorphologic features of the 215 cases of central calcifying odontogenic cyst (CCOC) reported in the literature. Based on the present information, a clinicopathologic classification of calcifying odontogenic cyst is proposed. The CCOC is also compared with its peripheral counterpart and the differences discussed.

This article briefly reviews the clinical presentation and management of odontogenic cysts. A case is reported of an 18-year-old girl who, on 12-3-1986, presented for the first time at the Dental Department, University of Nairobi with a painful bony swelling in the chin area. The extensive swelling apparently arose long after the traditional removal of two mandibular incisors. After periodontal prophylaxis the cystic lesion was enucleated under a local anaesthetic and the cavity lining subjected to histopathological examination which revealed appearances consistent with those of an odontogenic…

A case report of an extraosseous calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) that appeared clinically to be a reactive lesion is presented. Review of the 28 previously published extraosseous COC cases and the current case report showed a mean age of 45.2 years at the time of diagnosis. No predilection for either gender or the maxilla or mandible was ascertained. A majority (51.9%) of cases occurred between the canines and none was posterior to the first molar. Because recurrences of an extraosseous COC have not been reported, the recommended treatment for an extraosseous COC is conservative surgical exc

Primary intraosseous carcinoma of the jaws (PIOC) is an uncommon lesion, but may not be as rare as commonly believed. Since the putative source of the epithelium giving rise to an intraosseous carcinoma is the epithelium involved in odontogenesis, these lesions are often designated as odontogenic carcinomas. These tumors may theoretically arise (1) from the lining of odontogenic cysts, (2) from other epithelial odontogenic tumors, or (3) de novo from presumed odontogenic rests. While not included in most classifications of PIOC, it appears logical to also include intraosseous mucoepidermoid ca…
