Immune checkpoint inhibitors have markedly improved outcomes in patients with multiple advanced malignancies. However, their widespread use has markedly increased the incidence of immune-related adverse events (irAEs). irAEs can affect a wide range of organ systems and are characterized by heterogeneous onset, broad toxicity spectra, and complex management requirements, thus ultimately impairing treatment continuation and patient quality of life. This review systematically summarizes the epidemiological features, clinical progression, and current management of irAEs. Existing guidelines largel

Radiation-associated cardiovascular disease (RACD), a complex disease characterized with pericarditis, myocardial damage, valvular heart diseases, heart failure, vasculopathy and ischemic heart disease, has a generally poor prognosis. While RACD may be acute, it often manifests in the late years or even decades following radiation exposure to the chest. With an increasing number of cancer survivors, RACD is likely to become an important issue in cardio-oncology. This review discusses pre-radiation therapy (RT) preparation, peri-RT patient management and long follow-up planning post-RT from a c

The profession of psycho-oncologist in Poland is not sufficiently regulated by law. The issue is further complicated by the fact that this profession has not been classified by the legislature in the group of medical professions, but only in the group of allied health professions. Currently, according to the Regulation of the Minister of Health on guaranteed services in the field of hospital treatment, a psycho-oncologist is a person with higher medical education, i.e. a graduate of a medical university, for example a doctor or a nurse, who has fulfilled the additional condition of completing

CONTEXT: Discordance in prognostic understanding between caregivers of adults with advanced cancer and the oncologist may shape caregivers' views of the oncologist and bereavement outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: We examined prospective associations of caregiver-oncologist discordance with caregiver-oncologist therapeutic alliance and caregiver anxiety after patient death.
METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of data collected in a cluster randomized controlled trial from August 2012 to June 2014 in Western New York and California. At enrollment, caregivers and oncologists used a seven-point scal

Background: Modulated electro-hyperthermia (mEHT) is a variation of the conventional hyperthermia which selectively targets the malignant cell membranes in order to heat the malignant tissue and sensitize the tissue to oncology treatments. Although widely applied, the formulation of guidelines for the use thereof is still in progress for many tumors. Aim: In this paper we review the literature on the effects of mEHT in cancer patients on local disease control and survival. Methodology: Our review on data presents the collected experience with capacitive hyperthermia treatments with the EHY-200

Although older adults with cancer often prioritize maintaining physical function when making treatment decisions, whether patients and oncologists have similar expectations of future functioning remains unknown. We explored this among patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and their oncologists in a pilot randomized controlled trial testing a decisional support tool (University of Rochester-Geriatric Oncology Assessment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia [UR-GOAL]). We included adults aged ≥60 years with newly diagnosed AML, randomized 1:1 to UR-GOAL (AML educational video, assessment of aging-rel

INTRODUCTION: Multidisciplinary collaboration is essential to deliver optimal care for complex diseases such as pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). We sought to determine the association between medical and surgical oncologists' collaboration and long-term outcomes among patients with PDAC.
METHODS: We identified all patients with PDAC who underwent pancreatectomy using the SEER-Medicare database between 2015 and 2019. Patients were excluded if a primary treating medical or surgical oncologist was not identified. Collaboration between medical and surgical oncologists was measured as the

BACKGROUND: The widespread adoption of immune checkpoint inhibitors has significantly improved outcomes across multiple solid tumors but has also increased pressure on hospital-based oncology services, particularly oncology day hospitals. Subcutaneous (SC) formulations of immunotherapy offer a clinically validated alternative to intravenous (IV) administration and may facilitate more efficient, patient-centered models of cancer care delivery. However, the organizational, economic, and governance implications of this transition remain insufficiently explored.
METHODS: We conducted a mixed-meth

The gut microbiota has emerged as a critical determinant of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) efficacy, resistance, and toxicity. Retrospective and prospective studies profiling the taxonomic composition of intestinal microbes of patients treated with ICI have revealed specific gut microbial signatures associated with response. By contrast, dysbiosis, which can be caused by chronic inflammatory processes (such as cancer) or comedications, is a risk factor of resistance to ICI. Recent large-scale meta-analyses have confirmed that antibiotic (ATB) use before or during ICI therapy alters the micr

INTRODUCTION: Aggressive care at end-of-life can harm quality of life without significantly improving survival. Despite best practice guidelines, research shows that oncologists continue to provide too much treatment to patients, especially at the end-of-life. Understanding the perceptions of oncologists regarding unnecessary care toward end-of-life can inform interventions and mitigate overuse. This study aimed to understand the perceptions and experiences of oncologists regarding why overuse of services is occurring for cancer patients at the end-of-life and elucidate factors which impede th

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare and life-threatening condition characterized by uncontrolled activation of the immune system. HLH is a reactive mononuclear phagocytic response that occurs in association with a constellation of conditions such as malignancies and infections. The clinical diagnosis of HLH remains challenging because HLH can present with symptoms that significantly overlap with other causes of cytopenia, such as sepsis, autoimmune diseases, hematological cancers, and multiorgan failure. OBJECTIVE: Malnutrition in oncology patients has been consistently associated with poor clinical outcomes. Despite the existence of nutrition guidelines and recommendations that emphasize the role of nutrition in cancer care and despite the prevalence of nutrition care needs in oncology units, nutrition interventions are not always implemented. As a result, malnutrition is not adequately assessed or managed. The aims of this study were to investigate current nutrition practice and management, determine the awareness of cancer-related malnutrition among oncologists and healthcare professionals

Mycosis fungoides (MF) remains a challenge as a disease from its diagnosis through treatment and follow-up. The rarity of the disease and uncharacteristic clinical manifestations pose difficulty in diagnosis, and the lack of treatment facilities adds to the management woes. Though the Stanford technique is the most accepted modality of total skin electron beam therapy (TSEBT), the implementation details are still unstandardized. Different centers adopt different methodologies as per their convenience and suitability. We present a patient of MF with many dimensions of prediagnosis clinical feat

Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common primary malignant tumor of the liver, and it is particularly prevalent in East and Southeast Asia. With surgical and/or local interventional treatment methods, survival rates for early-stage hepatocellular cancers have increased. However, it is not yet clear which staging systems are more applicable in hepatocellular carcinoma. Serum albumin level is already being used as a criterion in most staging systems. Albumin is an important serum protein in human bodily functions, but only 5 % of the daily amount needed is synthesized by the liver. The serum
