Network analysis of internet addiction and sleep disturbance symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Internet addiction (IA) is a behavioral addiction to problematic internet use. IA is associated with poorer sleep quality. Few studies to date, however, have explored the interactions between symptoms of IA and symptoms of sleep disturbance. This study uses network analysis to identify bridge symptoms by analyzing these interactions in a large sample of students. METHOD: We recruited 1977 university students to participate in our study. Each student completed the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). We used these collected data for network a

Transgender Identity and Social Acceptance: Psychosocial Insights from a Phenomenological Study.

Transgender individuals experience complex emotional, social, and psychological challenges shaped by systemic discrimination, social exclusion, and varying degrees of familial acceptance in Türkiye. Despite growing global research, studies addressing these lived experiences within Türkiye's sociocultural context remain limited. This study explored how transgender individuals navigate family relationships, social environments, and available support systems, as well as how they construct resilience and imagine possibilities for social change. Using a descriptive phenomenological approach, semi-s

What Is Most Helpful? Integrating Gatekeeper and Peer Support Models of Suicide Prevention: Lived Experience Impacts Helping Perceptions.

Adolescents and young adults have high rates of exposure to the suicide thoughts and behaviors of people in their social networks and also report frequently trying to help. The current study aimed to describe the wide array of helping actions young people take and their perceptions of what was most helpful. Data came from the cross-sectional baseline data of Project Lift-Up, a national longitudinal online survey of adolescents and young adults (ages 13-22 at baseline). Participants who reported exposure to social network members' suicide thoughts and behaviors were asked about up to 33 helping

Spread of gambling abstinence through peers and comments in online self-help chat forums to quit gambling.

Habit formation occurs in relation to peer habits and comments. This general principle was applied to gambling abstinence in the context of online self-help forums to quit gambling. Participants in this study, conducted between September 2008 and March 2020, were 161 abstinent and 928 non-abstinent gamblers who participated in online self-help chat forums to quit gambling. They received 269,317 comments during their first 3 years of forum participation. Gamblers had an increased likelihood of 3-year continuous gambling abstinence if they had many peers in the forums. However, they had a decrea

The limited effects of social media use on misperceptions Social media's limited role in misperceptions.

Social media use has the potential to promote misperceptions, but evidence is mixed. Despite social media characteristics that include homophilous social networks, algorithms that can reinforce biases, and social bots that promote falsehoods, there is no evidence of a strong association between social media use and misperceptions. This project offers the strongest empirical test of this relation to date, providing additional evidence of the minimal effects of social media use on misperceptions. Data come from two independent large-N panel studies, each paired with online tracking data, one foc

Digital Sleep Disruption: Unraveling the Network Structure of Technology Use and Sleep Problems Through Network Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems have emerged as a critical health concern in the digital age, yet the complex mechanisms linking technology use to sleep disruption remain poorly understood. Previous research has typically examined isolated relationships between specific technological behaviors and sleep outcomes, overlooking the complex interplay among various digital factors. This study aims to address this gap by employing network analysis to investigate the interconnected relationships among multiple technology-related factors and their collective influence on sleep problems. METHODS: Using net

How did Chinese older drifters re-establish social networks to mitigate their loneliness in new residential surroundings: a qualitative study in Nanjing, China.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there has been a noticeable rise in the number of older individuals in China who have migrated to urban areas to support their adult children or care for their grandchildren. However, due to their separation from their hometowns and familiar social networks, a prevailing sense of loneliness has taken hold. Re-establishing social networks is a crucial means of alleviating their loneliness. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore how older individuals who have migrated to unfamiliar residential areas establish social connections to mitigate their feelings of loneliness

Online Sex-Seeking Among Men who have Sex with Men in Nigeria: Implications for Online Intervention.

The TRUST/RV368 project was undertaken to apply innovative strategies to engage Nigerian MSM into HIV care. In this analysis we evaluate characteristics of online sex-seekers from the TRUST/RV368 cohort of 1370 MSM in Abuja and Lagos. Logistic regression and generalized estimating equation models were used to assess associations with online sex-seeking. Online sex-seeking (n = 843, 61.5 %) was associated with participation in MSM community activities, larger social and sexual networks, and higher levels of sexual behavior stigma. In addition, online sex-seeking was associated with testing posi

Online Communities for Child-Attracted Persons as Informal Mental Health Care: Exploring Self-Reported Wellbeing Outcomes.

Online support communities are gaining attention among child-attracted persons (CAPs). Though research has largely focused on the negative consequences these environments create for potential offending, they may also provide a beneficial alternative to more formal treatment settings. To assess the utility for clinical and therapeutic purposes, this analysis focused on subcultural dynamics to examine self-reported wellbeing outcomes of participation in a Dutch forum for CAPs. A total of 15 semi-structured interviews were conducted with moderators, members and mental health professionals involve

A mindfulness-based, cognitive, social, digital relapse-prevention intervention for youth with depression in Australia: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial of Rebound.

INTRODUCTION: Major depressive disorder (MDD) causes significant disease burden and functional impairment during adolescence and young adulthood. While most young people recover from their first episode, around two-thirds will experience one or more relapses, which can become more severe and treatment-resistant with each episode. To address relapse in MDD, we developed a moderated online social therapy platform (titled Rebound) that integrates: (i) peer-to-peer social networking; (ii) tailored third-wave therapeutic content targeting mindfulness, self-compassion and rumination; and (iii) three

Expanding the reach of alcohol and other drug services: Prevalence and correlates of US adult engagement with online technology to address substance problems.

Online technologies are well integrated into the day-to-day lives of individuals with alcohol and other drug (i.e., substance use) problems. Interventions that leverage online technologies have been shown to enhance outcomes for these individuals. To date, however, little is known about how those with substance use problems naturally engage with such platforms. In addition, the scientific literatures on health behavior change facilitated by technology and harms driven by technology engagement have developed largely independent of one another. In this secondary analysis of the National Recovery

Patterns of Sexual Behavior and Sexually Transmitted Infections in Young Men Who Have Sex With Men.

PURPOSE: Young men who have sex with men (MSM) are at an increased risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Recent research has documented the importance of understanding the multidimensional nature of sexual risk behavior; however, little is known about how multidimensional patterns of sexual behavior among MSM may be associated with STIs. METHOD: This study applies latent class analysis to data from a large, HIV- sample of 18- to 25-year-old MSM recruited from social and sexual networking Web sites (N = 5965; 76% white, 11% Latino, 5% black, 4% Asian, 4% other; 74% homosexual, 21% b

Fighting social isolation of vulnerable people with dementia through remote group meetings: An experience report.

With the COVID-19 pandemic (WHO, 2020), social distancing became a crucial means to prevent further spread of the disease (Wendy et al, 2020). This raises concerns for dementia care (Wang et al, 2020), as social distancing leads to reduced cognitive stimulation, exercise, social networking and leisure activities (Brown et al, 2020). Active participation in art has shown positive impacts on the psychosocial wellbeing of stroke survivors (Morris et al, 2019). Additionally, engaging with humor potentially improves the memory, communication and self-esteem of people with dementia (PWD) (Stevens, 2

Assessment of Social Support and Quitting Smoking in an Online Community Forum: Study Involving Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: A key factor in successfully reducing and quitting smoking, as well as preventing smoking relapse is access to and engagement with social support. Recent technological advances have made it possible for smokers to access social support via online community forums. While community forums associated with smoking cessation interventions are now common practice, there is a gap in understanding how and when the different types of social support identified by Cutrona and Suhr (1992) (emotional, esteem, informational, tangible, and network) are exchanged on such forums. Community forums t
