Assessing the competitiveness of applicants in the ophthalmology match based on interest in pediatric ophthalmology.

BACKGROUND: The number of pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus (PO&S) fellowship positions filled each year remains consistently lower compared with other subspecialities. It is unclear where along the recruitment pathway trainees interested in pediatrics decide to select other subspecialities. This study assesses for differences in the competitiveness of ophthalmology residency applicants based on interest in PO&S, which may impact their ability to matriculate into residency. METHODS: We reviewed the 2022-2023 San Francisco (SF) Match applications submitted to a single ophthalmology reside…

Conclusions: Handheld OCT is a beneficial complement for diagnosis of diseases in paediatric ophthalmology. As a complement to established methods like wide-field fundus photography, HH-SD-OCT allows the physician to assess and follow-up new objective structural information. As the Bioptigen does not have an eye tracker, it is challenging to orient the s …

Ophthalmological and neuro-ophthalmological involvement in Churg-Strauss syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: It is well known that different types of eye involvement may develop during the course of systemic vasculitides. METHODS: We report here a case of Churg-Strauss syndrome (allergic granulomatous angiitis) characterized by the presence of multiple ophthalmological and neuro-ophthalmological lesions, i.e., mononeuritis of the fourth cranial nerve, multifocal choroidal ischaemia, and bilateral ischaemic optic neuropathy. RESULTS: Ischaemic lesions in the posterior ciliary plexus and chorio-retinal circulation, which appeared simultaneously after a phase of disease activity, were docu

[Clinical electro-ophthalmology at the Max Planck Institute of the Frankfurt University Ophthalmology Clinic 1970-1991].

The survey shows the frequency and distribution of diseases evaluated by electroophthalmological methods. Patients with retinal diseases (51.2%) and those with diseases of the optic nerve (21.8%) were examined most frequently. In a high percentage these investigations lead to a clinically useful assessment: described as confirmation or exclusion of a clinical diagnosis, as establishing a possible differential diagnosis or clearing up formerly unknown aspects of a disease. In cases of hereditary retinal disorders only 11% remained unclear, with presumed optic neuritis only 6%. The importance of

Ophthalmologic manifestations of granulocytic sarcoma (myeloid sarcoma or chloroma). The third Pan American Association of Ophthalmology and American Journal of Ophthalmology Lecture.

The clinicopathologic review of 33 well-documented cases of granulocytic sarcoma on file in the Registry of Ophthalmic Pathology confirmed the facts that this tumor is encountered mainly in children, that boys are affected more frequently than girls, and that white Americans appear to be less vulnerable than other ethnic groups. While granulocytic sarcoma is a variant of granulocytic leukemia, the tumor may appear before, after, or concomitantly with hematologic evidence of leukemia. In the present series only four of the 33 patients were already known to have leukemia when they were first see

[OPHTHALMOLOGY - ON THE TIP OF THE SPEAR].

Ophthalmology is a broad branch of medicine, which includes an extensive range of sub-specialties on one hand, and interfaces with other fields of medicine on the other. This issue contains papers from different sub-specialties of ophthalmology, that together cover several of the most important issues in this field. These papers present the topics in a manner compatible with the wide readership of the journal, and touch upon the most current updates and innovations. The original articles in this issue deal with treatments for the prevention of myopia progression in children, treatment of compl…

Ophthalmology and oculoplastics for the rhinologist.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: As the management of ophthalmic and sinus disease advances, it is important to stay abreast of all current management options. This involves knowledge of adjacent anatomy and disease processes, and collaboration between multiple specialties. The authors provide a review of relevant ophthalmic and oculoplastic topics for the rhinologist. RECENT FINDINGS: The scope and surgical skills of oculoplastic and rhinologist specialists have grown in conjunction with medical and technological advancements. Familiarity with the presentations of sinus disease in the orbit can decrease t

Ophthalmological findings in brucellosis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the ophthalmological findings in patients diagnosed with acute, subacute or chronic brucellosis and to determine the effects of this disease on ocular structures. METHODS: Eighty-seven patients diagnosed with brucellosis and 71 healthy cases (as a control group) were enrolled in this prospective study. All participants underwent a complete ophthalmic evaluation, including slit lamp biomicroscopic examination, Goldman applanation tonometry, specular microscopy, optical coherence tomography and fundoscopy with pupil dilation. RESULTS: Overall, ocular involvement was presen

Ophthalmological Findings in Mucopolysaccharidoses.

The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a heterogenous group of lysosomal storage disorders caused by the accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). The accrual of these compounds results in phenotypically varied syndromes that produce multi-organ impairment with widespread systemic effects. The low incidence of MPS (approximately 1/25,000 live births) in conjunction with the high childhood mortality rate had limited the availability of research into certain clinical features, especially ocular manifestations. As the recent successes of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and enzyme rep

Neuro-Ophthalmological Emergencies.

Neuro-ophthalmological emergencies constitute vision or life-threatening conditions if diagnosis and treatment are not promptly undertaken. Even with immediate therapy, these clinical entities carry a high rate of morbidity. They may present with diplopia, visual loss, and/or anisocoria. Arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy is an ominous condition, which can cause permanent and severe vision loss, stroke, or aortic dissection, requiring immediate steroid therapy. Pituitary apoplexy may go unnoticed if only computed axial tomography is performed. Diseases affecting the cavernous sinus a

[Ophthalmological causes of headache].

Ophthalmologic causes of headache represent a very complex and extensive problem, and very often differential diagnostic problem too. Many various reasons of headache can be caused by ophthalmologic diseases like those of anterior and posterior eye segments, acute and subacute angle closed glaucoma and orbital diseases. Headache can be caused by no or poor correction of the refraction anomalies. Ophthalmologic causes of headache are quite frequently connected with conditions that affect other body systems apart from the eyes, nervous and/or vascular system in particular. Although ophthalmologi
