This case report describes the multidisciplinary management of a young male who presented with a Class I incisor relationship and bi-maxillary dento-alveolar protrusion on a Class I skeletal base. The occlusion was complicated by an ankylosed and moderately infra-positioned upper left permanent central incisor, an anterior crossbite, crowding, a reduced overbite and centreline discrepancy. The incisor was traumatised and avulsed when the root was immature and the tooth was reimplanted with delay. On referral for orthodontic treatment at age 11 .5 years, the upper left central incisor was exper

INTRODUCTION: Wire syndrome (WS) refers to dental displacements that can be described as aberrant, inaccurate, unexplained, or excessive, on teeth still contained by an intact bonded retainer, without detachment or fracture, leading to evolving dental and periodontal, aesthetic and/or functional consequences. The objective of this study was to define the prevalence rate of mandibular WS and the associated risk factors.
METHODS: Participants were dental students who had undergone orthodontic treatment and were wearing an intact fixed mandibular retainer. They completed a 20-item questionnaire,

Patients presenting reduced periodontium represent a major concern for orthodontists. The purpose of this article is to present the clinical case of an adult patient who presented sequel of periodontal disease (diastemas) compromising her dental aesthetics. She was subjected to an orthodontic treatment with the application of light forces distant from the teeth with reduced periodontium. A periodontal support therapy was successfully implemented. The final stage of the treatment indicated satisfactory occlusal and periodontal characteristics.

Background: While polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) is widely used in orthodontic appliances such as clear aligners and retainers, there is limited experimental data assessing its performance under functional stresses, such as those encountered during dental movements and palatal expansion. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the ability of PETG thermoplastic material to withstand deformation under functional and expansion forces, specifically within the context of orthodontic applications. Subjects and Methods: To estimate the firmness of the screw within the appliance, a universal

We developed an orthodontic appliance completely made of organic polymer. The appliance was used for many years and proved very effective. It was used for the treatment of patients with metal allergy, and as a result, it is believed to be the best choice for treating metal allergies. In this report, we are presenting a surgical case with Class III malocclusion for a patient with metal allergy, and the concept of the appliance is briefly discussed.

INTRODUCTION: The lysosomal cysteine protease cathepsin B is known to play an important role in the resolution of organic matrix, a final step in bone resorption. Cystatins function as an inhibitor of cathepsin B. Determining the correlation between cathepsin B and cystatin levels in gingival crevicular fluid at various times might provide a better understanding of both the dynamics and the metabolic stages of orthodontic tooth movement.
METHODS: Human gingival crevicular fluid was collected at the distal sulcus from the canines of persons not in orthodontic treatment, in retention, and in re

When restoring severely compromised teeth, respecting the supracrestal tissue attachment and retaining the most coronal and radicular tooth structure is essential to achieving a sufficient ferrule. Forced orthodontic extrusion is a minimally invasive method that allows hard- and soft-tissue conservation. This article describes the treatment of a severely damaged maxillary central incisor that was managed by using a simplified orthodontic extrusion method with intracoronal elastic and metal ligatures applied through a palatal bar and followed by the biologically oriented preparation technique (

Dental implants are reliable to replace teeth lost because of traumatic dental injury. However, dental implants behave like ankylosed teeth and should not be placed in growing individuals because of the risk of infraposition. This risk may be reduced by ensuring arrested skeletal growth and ideal incisal support. The timing of implant placement may be immediate, early, conventional, or late and is determined by the extent of the trauma, remaining growth, and conditions of the hard and soft tissues. Timing should allow an observation period to properly evaluate the prognosis of concomitantly tr

OBJECTIVE: A technique is presented for generating and recording lingual and palatine nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs).
METHODS: Pairs of thin, stainless steel disk electrodes were mounted onto mandibular or maxillary acrylic splints, similar to orthodontic retainers. Mandibular splint electrodes were oriented to contact the under surface of the tongue along the course of the right and left lingual nerves and maxillary splint electrodes were oriented to contact the hard palate bilaterally along the course of the palatine nerves. SEP recording electrodes were placed on the scalp 1

Missing canines compromise function and esthetics and therefore should be restored. In case of a retained canine, there can be a conservative approach of classic orthodontic eruption. If that is not effective, an alternative treatment method is to remove the retained tooth, followed by implant placement or transalveolar autotransplantation of the retained canine. En bloc autotransplantation of a retained canine, with surrounding bone, preserves canine periodontium and increases chances for revascularization and vitality of the transplanted tooth. This paper presents an en bloc autotransplantat

The bonded lingual retainer (BLR) is considered a favorable choice for retaining lower incisors' alignment post-orthodontic treatment; however, it may cause some unwanted effects such as inadvertent tooth movement and torque changes. These often result in gingival recession (Miller class III-type) with exposure of the root surface, which compromises the esthetics and hinders the comfort of the patient. Fifteen post-orthodontic patients presenting Miller class III-type recessions with BLR were examined. Two protocols were used: the first included the removal of the BLR prior to surgery and the

INTRODUCTION: Several protocols have been suggested in the literature to bond fixed retainers without a clear emerging consensus. This study aimed to compare, over 18 months, the bonding failure rate of mandibular canine-to-canine Zachrisson-type retainer after either sandblasting or pumicing the enamel surface before bonding.
METHODS: Ethical approval was obtained. Patients about to enter their retention phase were recruited from October 2019 to January 2021 at the local University hospital. Patients were block-randomized either in the 50 μm aluminum oxide particles sandblasting group (exper

Unwanted tooth movements caused by long-term bonded fixed retainer placement or improperly placed orthodontic appliances can cause adverse occlusal and periodontal effects. This case series reports the treatment of severe complications of long-term fixed retention in two previously orthodontically treated adult patients. Both patients wore a mandibular canine-to-canine bonded retainer, with no evident signs of debonding or breakage; however, the mandibular incisor, which had remained bonded to the retainer, was bearing the entire incisor load, resulting in extreme lingual movement of the root,

An adult male patient who had lost his maxillary left central incisor seven years ago in a traffic accident presented with a chief complaint about his unaesthetic appearance associated with the loss of his maxillary left central incisor space, a Class III molar occlusion, and an anterior open bite malocclusion due to tongue-thrust swallowing. Fixed orthodontic treatment was rendered following fan-type expansion of the maxilla. A Maryland bridge as a minimally invasive dentistry approach was used as a retention appliance and the patient's aesthetic appearance was restored.

A new type of composite materials, referred to as low viscosity composites, has been introduced onto the dental market. Little has been published yet concerning the biological and mechanical properties of these new materials, and the practitioner has to rely on the information, provided by the manufacturer. The low viscosity composites are hybrid composites, with a decreased amount of filler particles. This results in a lower viscosity, which makes these materials more appropriate in certain situations. Since the filler loading of these materials is decreased, one could expect inferior mechani
