AIM: The objective of this epidemiological survey is to investigate the dental-skeletal features of subjects attending the Public Dental Service in Unità Operativa Complessa (UOC) (Orthodontic Department of "La Sapienza University of Rome") and compare them with the existing body of evidence obtained from other surveys. Accordingly, the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) was employed, in order to achieve a common framework to allow the shaping of public health prevention practices.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A sample of 3,491 subjects in the Orthodontic Department of "La Sapienza-Universi

Orthodontic treatment is planned on an individual, case-by-case basis after thoroughly considering the patient's overall facial and dental characteristics, the expected duration of treatment, costs, patient preferences, and the orthodontist's experience. This article reports the treatment of a patient with a maxillary premolar-molar transposition in the permanent dentition that was successfully managed with orthodontic treatment. A girl, aged 10 years 2 months, came for treatment with an ectopic maxillary left premolar. Radiographic analysis indicated a developing complete transposition of the

Indication of intermediate retention after early treatment of class II malocclusion has not been yet assessed by comparative studies. Therefore, it is up to the practitioner to analyse the need for retention in the time period between the two phases. Does wearing a retainer indeed decrease the chance of relapse between phase one and phase two? We performed a retrospective comparative study consisting of 90 subjects in mixed dentition with class II molar relationships with an increased overjet (> or = 5 mm) treated in the J.-J. Aknin office with DAC appliance. The sample was divided into two gr

AIM: To illustrate a simple effective method for early treatment of pseudo Class III in the mixed dentition and to highlight the advantages of early treatment by showing a 4-year follow-up of the treatment effects.
SUBJECTS: Twenty-one consecutive southern Chinese patients with a mean age of 9.6 years were included in the early treated group with pseudo Class III malocclusion.
METHODS: Lateral cephalometric films taken at the beginning and at the end of treatment were analysed. The arithmetic mean and standard deviation (SD) were calculated for each cephalometric variable and paired t-tests

Medical records of dogs with dolico- or mesaticephalic conformation who were presented to a private veterinary referral dental practice with malocclusion of the deciduous or permanent dentition were retrospectively reviewed from a 3-year period (2015-2018). Records were evaluated to determine the type(s) of malocclusions and 198 dogs were evaluated with permanent malocclusions. Of the dogs with deciduous malocclusions, 45 (60%) had variations of a MAL1, 28 (38%) had a MAL2, 13 (17.6%) had a MAL3, and four (5.4%) had a MAL4, with 19 (26%) having more than one type of malocclusion. BACKGROUND: Interceptive orthodontic treatment aims to eliminate factors that prevent the harmonious development of the maxillary and mandibular arches during childhood, and elastodontic appliances (EAs) represent a group of devices with an increasingly important role. This systematic narrative hybrid review (HR) aims to provide an overview of the clinical indications for the use of EAs according to the available evidence and to identify potential research areas for unexplored applications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To assess the available literature on the subject, selective database searches w

Permanent teeth that remain impacted could lead to the early loss of primary teeth and cause space problems in dental arches. We present two cases of ectopic eruption of the permanent maxillary first molars treated with soft distal movements using a modified Nance palatal arch (NPAm). The wire was soldered to the band and positioned distally to serve as support for the elastic chain, which was attached to a bonded button on the occlusal surface. After a few months, the ectopic eruption was corrected, preserving the adjacent primary teeth and restoring the occlusion. An NPAm is a viable option

INTRODUCTION: More than 15 years of experience in orthodontic-surgical collaboration has allowed the authors to identify some situations in which a new perspective is needed. Although it may seem easy to refer a patient to a maxillo-facial surgeon in cases of major dysmorphoses, this can lead to yet other dilemmas: a loss of results at the end of a developmental growth stage, an adult requesting a return to treatment after a camouflage orthodontic treatment or a non-cooperative child in an interceptive and preventive treatment phase. Then, a comprehensive process of reassessment becomes compul

BACKGROUND: Access to orthodontic treatment remains limited for many socially vulnerable children and adolescents due to financial, administrative, and social barriers. Despite the high prevalence of malocclusion and its potential impact on oral health and quality of life, few reports have described practical models aimed at improving access to orthodontic care for underserved populations. This study describes a community-based model developed at the Caritas Dental Clinic in Rome to provide free orthodontic treatment to vulnerable minors.
METHODS: This Community Case Study reports the impleme

PURPOSE: This study evaluates the skeletal response to functional orthodontic therapy in growing children with hemifacial microsomia (HM). A method of classification for mandibular growth subsequent to treatment is also suggested.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen growing children with unilateral HM were treated. Each patient was graded according to the skeletal, auricular, tissue (SAT) classification. Patients graded S4-S5 were excluded because the severity of the malformation made them unsuitable for functional orthodontic treatment. All patients initially underwent a period of treatment with

Skepticism about the long-term stability of immediate results achieved due to ongoing changes in craniofacial structures till growth completion is perhaps one of the reasons why very early treatment of Class III malocclusion is often not considered by many clinicians. This paper highlights the positive growth changes in the long-term, post-correction, in different types of developing Class III relations in children aged 2-5 years. The favorable outcomes may urge a more significant number of pediatric dentists to undertake this initiative for the benefit of young child patients and the orthodon

OBJECTIVES: To compare the impact of primary canine and primary first molar extractions with extractions of only the primary canine regarding correction of palatally displaced canines (PDCs).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two children aged 9.5-13.5 years with 48 PDCs were randomly allocated to either the double-extraction group (DEG) or single-extraction group (SEG). Clinical and radiographic examinations were performed at baseline and at 6-month intervals until the canine emerged or orthodontic treatment was started. Outcome measures were: emergence of maxillary canine (yes/no), emergence of

BACKGROUND: Ectopic position of a maxillary first permanent molar results in a local malocclusion within the mixed dentition and occurs when the tooth erupts more mesially to its normal path of eruption. The prevalence of ectopic maxillary first permanent molars has been reported at approximately 4 per cent. Possible treatment options include the extraction of the primary second molar and the placement of a space maintainer, extraction of the primary second molar and later regaining lost space during comprehensive treatment of the malocclusion or implementing interceptive treatment to disimpac

This study investigated differences in periodontal health variables between buccally impacted maxillary canines (BIMC) and palatally impacted maxillary canines (PIMC) after surgical-orthodontic treatment with open technique. Nineteen patients were enrolled: 10 with unilateral BIMC (5 men, 5 women; mean age 18.50 ± 1.96 years) and 9 with unilateral PIMC (4 men, 5 women; mean age 19.44 ± 2.40 years). Probing depth and keratinized tissue were recorded 12 months after surgical-orthodontic treatment, and the differences between the 2 sides were analyzed as primary outcomes. In addition, data for BI

INTRODUCTION: A prospective, controlled cohort study was started in 1998 to investigate the effects of orthodontic treatment in the early mixed dentition with the eruption guidance appliance.
METHODS: Occlusal changes were recorded in 167 treated children and 104 controls after they had reached the middle mixed-dentition stage. Treatment began when the first deciduous incisor was exfoliated (T1) and ended when all permanent incisors and first molars were fully erupted (T2). The children's mean ages were 5.1 years (SD 0.5) at T1 and 8.4 years (SD 0.5) at T2.
RESULTS: From T1 to T2, overjet in

The demand for fast and invisible treatment options for adults has grown. Treatment protocols involving clear aligners in association with alveolar corticotomy have been developed in response to this demand. Alveolar corticotomy surgery can accelerate orthodontic tooth movement, but good clinical follow-up is crucial and can become cumbersome as the frequency of aligner changes accelerates. Clinical monitoring with patient-managed software can be of assistance in such cases. We present the ortho-surgical treatment of a healthy 21-year-old woman with Class III malocclusion who was treated with

Class III dysmorphia, classically distributed in hereditary or functional etiology, have often multifactorial causes. Breaking the dysmorpho-dysfunctional cascade with early treatment may seem to be an essential alternative to give growth a new orientation. Whether the treatments are preventive, interceptive with or without an appliance, orthodontic or surgical (early, first-line or late), this takes more account of the clinical form than of age. The authors, through clinical cases, will develop their therapeutic approach, based on clinical common sense. Waiting to act at the right time is ess

Severe dentoalveolar ankylosis is an etiological factor for malocclusion. When infraocclusion occurs early, it progresses with time, leading to severe consequences in young children because of compensatory supra-eruption of the antagonist tooth and mesialization of adjacent teeth. Early diagnosis allows for interception of the problem and may prevent orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this manuscript is to report two cases of infraocclusion of primary mandibular second molars that were diagnosed early and were treated with composite resin crowns. The use of indirect composite restorations f

BACKGROUND: There is a scarcity of data concerning the prevalence and pattern of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment needs in Syrian refugee. In this study, extra and intra-oral features of malocclusion and the dental health component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) were reported.
METHODS: Examination of 606 Syrian children/adolescents refugees attending Zaatari clinic was carried out (males = 280, females = 326, mean age = 11.84 ± 2.1 years). Subjects not within the age limit, with a history of orthodontic treatment, or with craniofacial anomalies were excluded. Both ext
