The association between childhood overweight and obesity and otitis media.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the association between otitis media and childhood obesity in a population-based sample of elementary school children in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. METHODS: The study design is a prospective cohort study, linking data from a population-based survey of Grade 5 students (aged 10-11 years) in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia in 2003 with Nova Scotia administrative health data. Measured body mass index was used to define weight status based on the age- and gender-specific cut-off points of the International Obesity Task Force. H

Exercise prescription for overweight and obese women: pregnancy and postpartum.

Once a low-risk pregnancy has been established, walking in combination with nutritional control may be effective in preventing excessive weight gain in overweight and obese women. Maternal exercise prescription should use the Frequency, Intensity, Time spent and Type of exercise principle, with a frequency of three to four sessions per week as ideal. Intensity based on a target heart-rate zone of 110 to 131 beats per minute for women 20 to 29 years of age and 108 to 127 beats per minute for women 30 to 39 years of age, coupled with use of the rating of perceived exertion scale and the "Talk Te

A policy-based school intervention to prevent overweight and obesity.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence and seriousness of childhood obesity has prompted calls for broad public health solutions that reach beyond clinic settings. Schools are ideal settings for population-based interventions to address obesity. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this work was to examine the effects of a multicomponent, School Nutrition Policy Initiative on the prevention of overweight (85.0th to 94.9th percentile) and obesity (> 95.0th percentile) among children in grades 4 through 6 over a 2-year period. METHODS: Participants were 1349 students in grades 4 through 6 from 10 schools in a US cit

Underweight, overweight and obesity as risk factors for mortality and hospitalization.

AIMS: The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing in many countries. We aimed to investigate differences in mortality and severe morbidity between underweight people (body mass index (BMI)<18.5), overweight people (BMI 25 to <30), obese people (BMI> or =30), and those with normal weights (BMI 18.5 to <25). METHODS: Random samples of the Swedish population aged 16-74 years in 1980-81 and 1988-89 were followed for 12 years with regard to all-cause mortality and mortality from circulatory diseases, all inpatient care, and inpatient care for circulatory and musculoskeletal diseases. Overweight and obesity in Massachusetts: epidemic, hype or policy opportunity?

In 2005, more than 56 percent of Massachusetts adults were overweight, a 40 percent increase from rates reported in 1990. Overall, nearly 21 percent of Massachusetts adults are obese. Both Blacks and Hispanics in the state are more likely than whites to be both overweight and obese, whereas Asians are the least likely to be overweight or obese. Nationally, rates of overweight and obesity are even higher. Obesity is a risk factor for multiple serious health problems in adults, including heart disease, hardening of the arteries, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, certain types of cancer, str

Health plans' role in preventing overweight in children and adolescents.

The increasing prevalence of overweight children and adolescents in the United States threatens the well-being of a vast segment of this population. This paper examines how U.S. health plans can promote evidence-based behavioral-change strategies by directly intervening in medical settings and by supporting efforts to modify the environments in which young people live, study, and play. We describe a variety of innovative initiatives launched in recent years by health plans to address overweight among children and adolescents. Despite gaps in the evidence base, enough is now known to support ag

Predictive value of weight-for-age to identify overweight children.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to assess the predictive value of weight-for-age to identify overweight children and adolescents in the unusual research or public health situations where height is not available to calculate BMI. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999 to 2004 were used to calculate the sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of selected weight-for-age cut-off points to identify overweight children and adolescents (as defined by BMI >or=95th percentile). The feet of overweight and obese young children: are they flat or fat?

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the flat feet displayed by young obese and overweight children are attributable to the presence of a thicker midfoot plantar fat pad or a lowering of the longitudinal arch relative to that in non-overweight children. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Foot anthropometry, an arch index derived from plantar footprints, and midfoot plantar fat pad thickness measured by ultrasound were obtained for 19 overweight/obese preschool children (mean age, 4.3 +/- 0.9 years; mean height, 1.07 +/- 0.1 m; mean BMI, 18.6 +/- 1.2 kg/m(2)) and 19 non-

Medical strategies for weight loss in the overweight and obese patient.

In recent years, obesity has become a major public health problem in Western countries. The World Health Organization has defined obesity as a global epidemic of the third millennium. Treatment options for weight management include dietary intervention, physical activity, behavior modification, pharmacotherapy and surgery. However, the complexity of this chronic condition necessitates a coordinated multidisciplinary team-approach to the care of obese patients who fail weight control. The long-term duration of the treatment and the necessity of monitoring compliance and effectiveness should be

The prevalence and impact of overweight and obesity in an Australian obstetric population.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence and impact of overweight and obesity in an Australian obstetric population. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: The Mater Mother's Hospital (MMH), South Brisbane, is an urban tertiary referral maternity hospital. We reviewed data for the 18 401 women who were booked for antenatal care at the MMH, delivered between January 1998 and December 2002, and had a singleton pregnancy. Of those women, 14 230 had an estimated pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) noted in their record; 2978 women with BMI < or = 20 kg/m2 were excluded from further study; the remaining 11

Mortality in overweight and underweight children with acute myeloid leukemia.

CONTEXT: Current treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in children cures about half the patients. Of the other half, most succumb to leukemia, but 5% to 15% die of treatment-related complications. Overweight children with AML seem to experience excess life-threatening and fatal toxicity. Nothing is known about how weight affects outcomes in pediatric AML. OBJECTIVE: To compare survival rates in children with AML who at diagnosis are underweight (body mass index [BMI] < or =10th percentile), overweight (BMI > or =95th percentile), or middleweight (BMI = 11th-94th percentiles). Physical activity in relation to overweight and obesity in children and adolescents.

UNLABELLED: Fitness and physical activity levels of children and adolescents are commonly addressed but data on scientific investigations are both equivocal and methodologically diverse. The intensity and type of physical activity that benefit health and development during childhood are not known. Measurement of activity in children is problematic since there is no valid method of assessing activity levels that is feasible for use in large field studies. Most studies using self-report methods, heart rate studies using low heart rate threshold and doubly labelled water studies indicate relative

Dieting and the development of eating disorders in overweight and obese adults.

We reviewed articles evaluating the relations among dieting, weight loss treatment, weight cycling, eating disorders, and psychological functioning in overweight and obese adults. Moderate caloric (energy) restriction, in combination with behavioral weight loss treatment, does not seem to cause clinically significant binge eating in overweight adults without preexisting binge eating problems and might ameliorate binge eating, at least in the short term, in those reporting recurrent binge eating before treatment. Most studies of behavioral weight loss interventions report improvements in psycho

Comorbidities of overweight and obesity: current evidence and research issues.

PURPOSE: The evidence with regard to the relationship of obesity with medical comorbidities was assessed and priority research issues identified. METHODS: The existing literature in English was surveyed. RESULTS: The evidence is overwhelming on the association of obesity to a number of medical conditions. These include: insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, sleep apnea, arthritis, hyperuricemia, gall bladder disease, and certain types of cancer. The independent association of obesity seems also clearly established for coronary artery disease,

Gout and hyperlipidaemia. Effect of overweight on the levels of circulating lipids.

A study of the serum lipids in 90 patients with gout and 90 controls matched for age and weight index demonstrated that in gout there was a significant elevation of the mean serum levels of cholesterol (282 +/- 55 mg/100 ml), triglycerides (183 +/- 161 mg/100 ml) and phospholipids (270 +/- 61 mg/100 ml) compared with the controls whose mean values were respectively 243 +/- 41 mg, 95 +/- 53 mg and 245 +/- 36 mg. Hyperlipidaemia of mixed type was the most common lipid defect in the patients with gout; there was no difference in the frequency of pure hypercholesterolaemia (without hypertriglyceri

Dietary Habits in Children and Adolescents with Overweight and Obesity in Greece.

Introduction: Obesity in childhood and adolescence is a significant public health issue, associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. The search for effective strategies to combat obesity has spurred the development of e-health technologies, which objectively record behavioral data and correlate them with factors that increase body mass index (BMI). The aim of our study was to assess the dietary habits of children and adolescents with overweight and obesity in Greece.MethodsEight hundred eighty (n = 880) children and adolescents (mean age ± standard deviation: 12.226 ±

Timing of MVPA and psychosocial outcomes in adolescents with overweight/obesity.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with overweight/obesity have an elevated risk of mental health and behavioral difficulties. Exercise has been shown to impart psychological benefits to these individuals; however, whether the effects of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) delivery differ between weekdays and weekends is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effects of weekday and weekend MVPA at age 14 on internalizing and externalizing problems at age 17 among adolescents with overweight/obesity. METHODS: We analyzed data from two assessment waves of the UK Millennium Cohort St

Introduction and methodology: Standards of Care in Overweight and Obesity-2025.

Obesity is a chronic, relapsing, and progressive disease requiring long-term, interprofessional treatment strategies to improve health outcomes. With over 40% of US adults and nearly 20% of children affected, obesity remains a significant public health concern. Despite the American Medical Association's recognition of obesity as a chronic disease, gaps persist in education, training, and access to effective treatments. These gaps contribute to inadequate obesity management and reinforce stigma and weight bias in healthcare settings. The Standards of Care in Overweight and Obesity-2025, develope
