Beyond the "model minority" stereotype: trends in health risk behaviors among Asian/Pacific Islander high school students.

BACKGROUND: Asian/Pacific Islander (API) students have been stereotyped as the "model minority." The objective of this study was to examine the trends in health risk behaviors among API students who participated in the San Diego City Schools Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) between 1993 and 2005. METHODS: High school students from the San Diego City School District completed the self-administered YRBS between 1993 and 2005. Among sexually active students, logistic regression for survey data was used to examine trends in health risk behaviors. RESULTS: From 1993 to 2005, condom use at last s

Endemic filariasis on a Pacific Island. II. Immunologic aspects: immunoglobulin, complement, and specific antifilarial IgG, IgM, and IgE antibodies.

Sixty-eight individuals from a Pacific island hyperendemic for subperiodic bancroftian filariasis were selected from a larger study population to include the entire clinical spectrum of filarial infection in that region and also an "endemic control" group without clinical or parasitologic evidence of filarial infection. Analysis of their blood leukocyte and humoral immune responses yielded the following major findings: 1) levels of specific antifilarial antibodies of three different immunoglobulin class (IgG and IgM measured by ELISA and IgE determined by radioimmunoassay) were significantly g

Experience of physical abuse in childhood and perpetration of physical punishment and violence in adulthood amongst fathers: findings from the Pacific Islands Families Study.

BACKGROUND: Family violence is a serious and increasingly significant public health issue, both in New Zealand and internationally. While Pacific families in New Zealand experience disproportionately higher rates of violence compared to their Palagi counterparts, little epidemiological information exists about the effect of childhood abuse on Pacific fathers and whether it increases their proclivity on perpetrating violence. AIMS: To determine the prevalence of physical discipline administered to young Pacific children by their fathers and physical intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrated

Suicidal ideation and non-fatal suicidal self-directed violence prevalence and associations among Veterans residing in U.S. Pacific Island Territories: Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Suicide rates are high in United States (U.S.) Pacific Island Territories, where large numbers of Veterans reside. Yet knowledge of suicidal self-directed violence (SSDV) among Veterans in this region is limited. We examined the feasibility of surveying Veterans in Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), and American Samoa regarding suicidal ideation (SI) and non-fatal SSDV, and examined SI and non-fatal SSDV prevalence and associations with SI. Of 3,000 Veterans invited to participate (2022), 566 completed the survey (21.6% response rate). Population-based SI estimates

Stage-Survival Paradox in Young-Onset Lung Adenocarcinoma Patients Among Asian and Pacific Islander Women: A Population-Based Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) in young adults may represent a distinct entity with sex and ancestry-related differences. Population-level data on incidence and survival remain limited. We assessed age- and stage-specific trends in early-onset LUAD and evaluated racial and sex disparities in presentation and outcomes. METHODS: We used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database to identify patients aged 15-49 years diagnosed with LUAD. Age-adjusted incidence and stage-specific trends were assessed using joinpoint regression. Cause-specific survival was analyzed usi

A triple burden in native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander patients with epilepsy: The cardiometabolic risks of obesity, diabetes, smoking, and their association with seizure control.

BACKGROUND: People with epilepsy (PWE), particularly Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (NHPI), face significant cardiometabolic disparities. This study characterized the "triple burden" of obesity, diabetes, and tobacco use across White, Asian, and NHPI PWE in Hawaii and identified factors associated with seizure control. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 403 adult PWE (41.2% White, 24.1% Asian, 34.7% NHPI) was conducted at a Hawaii-based clinic. Multivariable logistic regression compared comorbidity profiles and identified factors associated with poor seizure control (breakthroug

Antenatal health and perinatal outcomes of Pacific Islander women in Australia with and without gestational diabetes: A ten-year retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Pacific Islander (PI) women in Australia have an increased risk of gestational diabetes (GDM); however, their perinatal outcomes are poorly understood. AIM: The aim was to determine the maternal characteristics and perinatal outcomes of PI women with and without GDM compared to Australian/European (AE)-born women. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of perinatal outcomes of singleton deliveries >20 weeks' gestation between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2020 was conducted at a tertiary provider (Melbourne, Australia). Antenatal details and birth outcomes were extracted from the Bir

Trends in Cardiovascular Disease by Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Ethnicity, Medicare Health Outcomes Survey 2011-2015.

BACKGROUND: The burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is increasing in the aging population. However, little is known about CVD risk factors and outcomes for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Other Pacific Islander (NH/PI) older adults by disaggregated subgroups. METHODS: Data were from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services 2011-2015 Health Outcomes Survey, which started collecting expanded racial/ethnic data in 2011. Guided by Andersen and Newman's theoretical framework, multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the prevalence and determinants of CVD r

Associations between physical activity and functional limitations in Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander middle-aged and older adults in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: Physical activity (PA) can help individuals maintain physical function and independence. The association between PA and functional limitations (FL) has not been explored in the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) population. The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between PA and FL among NHPI adults (age ≥ 45 years) living in the United States. DESIGN: Cross-sectional data from the 2014 NHPI-National Health Interview Survey (N = 628) was used to create three constructs of FL based on responses from the Functioning and Disability Survey Module: needing equipm

Social mixing in Fiji: Who-eats-with-whom contact patterns and the implications of age and ethnic heterogeneity for disease dynamics in the Pacific Islands.

Empirical data on contact patterns can inform dynamic models of infectious disease transmission. Such information has not been widely reported from Pacific islands, nor strongly multi-ethnic settings, and few attempts have been made to quantify contact patterns relevant for the spread of gastrointestinal infections. As part of enteric fever investigations, we conducted a cross-sectional survey of the general public in Fiji, finding that within the 9,650 mealtime contacts reported by 1,814 participants, there was strong like-with-like mixing by age and ethnicity, with higher contact rates among…

Disaggregating data on Asian American and Pacific Islander women to provide new insights on potential exposures to hazardous air pollutants in California.

BACKGROUND: The Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) population is heterogeneous and rapidly growing in the United States, with a high proportion concentrated in California. Although traditionally assumed to have lower rates of breast cancer than non-Hispanic white women, recent studies have suggested considerable variation in incidence by AAPI ethnic group, with rates in some exceeding those in non-Hispanic whites. The potential role of environmental toxicants has not been well explored and may provide insights into these patterns. METHODS: We created an exposure potential index (EPI)

Heritable factors play a major role in determining host responses to Wuchereria bancrofti infection in an isolated South Pacific island population.

BACKGROUND: It is increasingly recognized that host genetic factors may play an important role in determining the outcome of filarial infections. To test this hypothesis in bancroftian lymphatic filariasis, pedigree data were collected twice during an 18-year period from an isolated Polynesian population living on a Pacific island where lymphatic filariasis is endemic. METHODS: Using variance-component analysis, we examined the contribution of shared genetic and environmental effects on host clinical and immune responses to filarial infection, along with potential confounding determinants.
