The Mental Health of Frontline Health Care Providers During Pandemics: A Rapid Review of the Literature.

OBJECTIVE: This rapid review addresses two key questions posed by the COVID-19 pandemic: What are the anticipated mental health sequelae for frontline health workers? and What are best practices during health emergencies to address the mental health needs of these workers? METHODS: This review synthesized the literature on the mental health sequelae for health workers during major pandemics and epidemics that occurred in the 21st century (severe acute respiratory syndrome, Middle East respiratory syndrome, Ebola virus disease, and swine flu) and interventions used to address related mental he…

Predicting antigenic variants of H1N1 influenza virus based on epidemics and pandemics using a stacking model.

H1N1 is the earliest emerging subtype of influenza A viruses with available genomic sequences, has caused several pandemics and seasonal epidemics, resulting in millions of deaths and enormous economic losses. Timely determination of new antigenic variants is crucial for the vaccine selection and flu prevention. In this study, we chronologically divided the H1N1 strains into several periods in terms of the epidemics and pandemics. Computational models have been constructed to predict antigenic variants based on epidemic and pandemic periods. By sequence analysis, we demonstrated the diverse mu…

Age-specific mortality patterns across influenza pandemics: evidence from all-cause mortality data across multiple populations.

BACKGROUND: Understanding age-specific mortality patterns across historic influenza pandemics is crucial for future pandemic preparedness. Prior research shows that, while the 1918 pandemic caused unprecedented mortality in younger adults, subsequent pandemics in 1957, 1968, and 2009 displayed varying mortality patterns, with elevated risks in some younger populations and elderly populations. However, cross-national comparative analyses of these patterns using harmonized all-cause mortality data remain lacking but are critical for informing public health strategies. METHODS: We analysed age-s…

Extracellular Vesicles as Molecular Regulators of Viral Infection: Implications for COVID-19 and Future Viral Pandemics.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), exposed critical gaps in global preparedness for rapidly evolving viral pandemics. Though current antiviral treatments have shown some efficacy in managing COVID-19, substantial limitations, such as inefficient targeted drug delivery, aberrant host immune responses, and inadequate preparedness for future viral pandemics, were also evident. These challenges underscore the urgent need for target-specific, precise and efficient therapeutic strategies to modulate viral entry and immune dysr…

Preparing for future pandemics: Automated intensive care electronic health record data extraction to accelerate clinical insights.

BACKGROUND: Manual data abstraction from electronic health records (EHRs) for research on intensive care patients is time-intensive and challenging, especially during high-pressure periods such as pandemics. Automated data extraction is a potential alternative but may raise quality concerns. This study assessed the feasibility and credibility of automated data extraction during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. METHODS: We retrieved routinely collected data from the COVID-Predict Dutch Data Warehouse, a multicenter database containing the following data on intensive care patie…

Assessment of restriction measures implemented during COVID pandemics on community lifestyle choices via wastewater-based epidemiology.

SARS-CoV-2 pandemic affected lifestyle habits, and the mental health and wellbeing of people around the world. In this manuscript, two towns (Paulton and Radstock) and two cities (Bath and Bristol) in Southwest England (> 1 million people) were monitored for two years using Wastewater-Based Epidemiology to assess impacts of COVID (including management measures such as lockdowns and movement restrictions) on community lifestyle choices: illicit drugs, legal stimulants, abused pharmaceuticals and pain pharma usage. Results were triangulated with key dates captured during the pandemic (national l

Towards a Comprehensive Definition of Pandemics and Strategies for Prevention: A Historical Review and Future Perspectives.

The lack of a universally accepted definition of a pandemic hinders a comprehensive understanding of and effective response to these global health crises. Current definitions often lack quantitative criteria, rendering them vague and limiting their utility. Here, we propose a refined definition that considers the likelihood of susceptible individuals contracting an infectious disease that culminates in widespread global transmission, increased morbidity and mortality, and profound societal, economic, and political consequences. Applying this definition retrospectively, we identify 22 pandemics…

Use of interviewer-administered telephone surveys during infectious disease outbreaks, epidemics and pandemics: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: During the COVID-19 crisis, researchers had to collect data remotely. Telephone surveys and interviews can quickly gather data from a distance without heavy expense. Although interviewer-administered telephone surveys (IATS) can accommodate the needs of international public health research, the literature on their use during infectious disease outbreaks is scarce. This scoping review aimed to map the characteristics of IATS during infectious disease outbreaks. METHODS: IATS conducted principally during infectious disease outbreaks and answered by informants at least 18 years old

Pandemics, policy, and the power of paradigm: will COVID-19 lead to a new scientific revolution?

Critical historical analysis of the 19th-century cholera and 21st-century coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemics suggests that in conflicts over pandemic-mitigation policies, the professional backgrounds of principal opponents reveal dominant and minority scientific paradigms, presaging possible epistemological shifts. Epistemic conflict over cholera helped spur biomedical expertise as the dominant paradigm for U.S. public health science and policy beginning in the 20th century. This paradigm was reflected in federal government reliance on infectious disease physicians as the primary scientific d…

Cessation and resumption of elective neurointerventional procedures during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic and future pandemics.

At the time of this writing, the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic continues to be a global threat, disrupting usual processes, and protocols for delivering health care around the globe. There have been significant regional and national differences in the scope and timing of these disruptions. Many hospitals were forced to temporarily halt elective neurointerventional procedures with the first wave of the pandemic in the spring of 2020, in order to prioritize allocation of resources for acutely ill patients and also to minimize coronavirus disease 2019 transmission risks to non-acute patients,

Impact of Personal Protection Habits on the Spread of Pandemics: Insights from an Agent-Based Model.

BACKGROUND: After several waves of spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, countries around the world are struggling to regain their economies by slowly lifting mobility restrictions and social distance measures applied during the crisis. Meanwhile, recent studies provide compelling evidence on how contact distancing, the use of face masks, and handwashing habits can reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission. In this context, we investigated the effect that these personal protection habits can have in preventing new waves of contagion. METHODS: We extended an agent-based COVID-19 epidemic model in

[COVID-19 and psychological behavior: a systematic review of the psychological effects of 21st century pandemics].

The aim of this work was to conduct a systematic review on psychological behavior in the context of pandemic scenarios during the twenty-first century. We focused on empirical works and brief case reports of H1N1 flu and COVID-19. Our review included 32 papers published both in English or Spanish. We built a set of tables that allowed us to classify the information in four main categories, namely the psychological impact of the pandemic, whether people follow or not official measures to protect themselves against the pandemic, psychological adherence considerations implied as mediators to resp

Plagues, pandemics and epidemics in Irish history prior to COVID-19 (coronavirus): what can we learn?

OBJECTIVES: This paper seeks to provide a brief overview of epidemics and pandemics in Irish history and to identify any lessons that might be useful in relation to psychiatry in the context of COVID-19. METHODS: A review of selected key reports, papers and publications related to epidemics and pandemics in Irish history was conducted. RESULTS: Viruses, epidemics and pandemics are recurring features of human history. Early Irish sources record a broad array of plagues, pandemics and epidemics including bubonic plague, typhus, cholera, dysentery and smallpox, as well as an alleged epidemic of…

The Evaluations of Swine Flu Magnitudes in TV News: A Comparative Analysis of Paired Influenza Pandemics.

This study examined how major TV news networks covered two flu pandemics in 1976 and 2009 in terms of news frames, mortality exemplars, mortality subject attributes, vaccination, evaluation approaches, and news sources. Results showed that the first pandemic was frequently framed with the medical/scientific and political/legal issues, while the second pandemic was emphasized with the health risk issue in TV news. Both flu pandemics were regularly reported with mortality exemplars, but the focus in the first pandemic was on the flu virus threat and vaccination side effects, while the vaccinatio…

Benefits of lethal pandemics: direct impact of contagious diseases on public administration in Hungary (1867-1914).

The reconciliation of 1867 between Austria and Hungary brought great changes to Hungarian public administration: the way towards the building up of a modern public administration had been opened. Although there was a functioning public health system and a related legislation from the late 18th century, major issues - such as balanced geographical distribution of medical personnel, fair access to medical services even in the poorer regions of the country, and the effective protection against some contagious diseases - were not resolved for decades. During the reform work of public administratio

Fit genotypes and escape variants of subgroup III Neisseria meningitidis during three pandemics of epidemic meningitis.

The genetic variability at six polymorphic loci was examined within a global collection of 502 isolates of subgroup III, serogroup A Neisseria meningitidis. Nine "genoclouds" were identified, consisting of genotypes that were isolated repeatedly plus 48 descendent genotypes that were isolated rarely. These genoclouds have caused three pandemic waves of disease since the mid-1960s, the most recent of which was imported from East Asia to Europe and Africa in the mid-1990s. Many of the genotypes are escape variants, resulting from positive selection that we attribute to herd immunity. Despite pos

Native Capillary Nanogel Electrophoresis Assay of Inhibitors of Neuraminidases Derived from H1N1 and H5N1 Influenza A Pandemics.

Tetrameric neuraminidases cleave the end-capping sialylated monomer from oligosaccharide ligands at the surface of a host cell infected by the influenza A virus. This cleavage releases the replicated virions from the host cell, making drugs that inhibit neuraminidase function effective to treat influenza A infections. A capillary electrophoresis separation-based assay is reported that maintains the native structure of tetrameric viral neuraminidases derived from H1N1 or H5N1 influenza A pandemics which convert, in-real time, a substrate that mimics 6'-sialyllated threonine-linked glycans on hu…

Serum asprosin levels as a potential prognostic biomarker in COVID-19: insights for future respiratory viral pandemics.

BACKGROUND: Although the initial surge of the COVID-19 pandemic has passed, identifying prognostic biomarkers remains critical for managing severe cases and preparing for future respiratory viral outbreaks. Asprosin, a metabolic hormone involved in energy homeostasis and inflammation, has been linked to cardiometabolic disorders, but its relationship with COVID-19 severity has not been fully elucidated. This prospective study aimed to investigate the association between serum asprosin levels, disease severity, and clinical outcomes in COVID-19 patients. METHODS: A total of 121 participants we
