[Mesenteric panniculitis in a man with abdominal pain, fever and diarrhea].

In a 64-year-old white male with abdominal pain, fever, diarrhoea and weight loss there were radiological signs of mesenteric panniculitis: thickening of the small bowel loops, an infiltrate above the bladder and in the lower right abdomen an ileum loop with a spiculated border, and streaky strands emanating from the mesenteric fat in the lower abdomen. The clinical signs resolved spontaneously with conservative treatment in 3 weeks and after 3 months the radiological abnormalities had disappeared completely. The pathogenesis of mesenteric panniculitis is unknown. The prognosis is favourable.

Successful treatment of retractile mesenteritis with oral progesterone.

Retractile mesenteritis is a rare inflammatory mesenteric disorder that involves the intestine secondarily. The natural history of this process is diverse, but most patients require some empiric therapeutic measures. Up to now, pharmacological therapy has included corticosteroids, colchicine, and immunosuppressive drugs. Although these drugs are successful in most patients, some have been refractory to these therapies and, in others, the beneficial effects were counterbalanced by adverse reactions. Many patients require surgery, but most have poor results. This report describes a 42-year-old m

[Severe weight loss at the beginning of mesenteric panniculitis].

We report a case of mesenteric panniculitis that presented with a severe lost of weight. We stress the difficulty that entails the diagnosis of this unusual entity, and also the excellent response to corticoid therapy in our patient. The clinical, pathological and therapeutic features of mesenteric panniculitis are reviewed.

[Mesenteric panniculitis].

In a 76 year old patient computed tomography of the abdomen and laparoscopic biopsy revealed a mesenteric panniculitis as cause of recurrent fever and shaking chills. The fever resolved under corticosteroid therapy and the patient remains well three month after onset of treatment.

Ulcerative and pyogranulomatous pododermatitis due to Pseudomonas luteola infection in a domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo): a case report with literature review of this emerging zoonotic disease in ferrets.

Pseudomonas luteola (P.luteola), formerly called Chryseomonas luteola, is a strict aerobic gram-negative bacillus, 0.8 to 1.0 µm wide and 1.5 to 2.5 µm long, considered an opportunistic pathogen found ubiquitously in humid environments, both in soil and water. It sporadically causes disease in animals and immunosuppressed humans or those subjected to invasive procedures such us peritoneal dialysis or catheterization. In ferrets, this infection was first described in Spain in 2012 and since then, cases have appeared occasionally in Finland, Austria, Australia, France, the United States and also

CT findings in sclerosing mesenteritis (panniculitis): spectrum of disease.

Sclerosing mesenteritis is a complex inflammatory disorder of the mesentery. Although sclerosing mesenteritis is often associated with other idiopathic inflammatory disorders such as retroperitoneal fibrosis, sclerosing cholangitis, Riedel thyroiditis, and orbital pseudotumor, its exact cause is unknown. The computed tomographic (CT) appearance of sclerosing mesenteritis will vary depending on the predominant tissue component (fat, inflammation, or fibrosis). CT plays an important role in suggesting the diagnosis in the proper clinical setting and can be useful in distinguishing sclerosing mes

[Immunoglobulin G4 Unrelated Idiopathic Mesenteric Sclerosis].

Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare benign disease with a prevalence of 0.16-3.4% and is characterized by chronic nonspecific inflammation and extensive fibrosis in the adipose tissue of the mesentery although the exact pathogenesis is still elusive. A 65-year-old woman was referred with suspicion of an abdominal mass and biliary stones on abdominal ultrasonography and CT. Bile duct stones were confirmed by endoscopic ultrasonography and successfully treated by endoscopic retrograde cholangiography with stone removal. Furthermore, a 4.7 cm conglomerated mass on small intestinal mesentery was sus

Mycobacterium genavense specific mesenteritic syndrome in HIV-infected patients: a new entity of retractile mesenteritis?

Abdominal mesenteritis is a rare and poorly understood gastroenterological disease. Here, we report on two identical cases of Mycobacterium genavense associated retractile mesenteritis in HIV-positive patients. A literature search retrieved only few small retrospective studies, which characterize the clinical course of this seldom infection. We propose a pathogen-specific syndrome of retractile mesenteritis in HIV-positive patients linked to Mycobacterium genavense infection on the basis of our clinical observation and literature meta-analysis with duodenal wall thickening, central mesenterial

Sclerosing mesenteritis presenting as protein-losing enteropathy: a fatal case.

Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare, benign disorder characterized by non-specific and chronic inflammation of the mesenteric adipose tissue. The disease usually presents with gastrointestinal symptoms and abdominal masses. The long-term prognosis is favorable, but it often becomes severe. In the present report we describe a 77-year-old man who presented with diarrhea, massive ascites and an abdominal mass. The rapid deterioration of the general condition of the patient limited invasive examinations and left the primary disease unclear. Despite symptomatic therapy, malnutrition and hypovolemia w

[Successfully treated case of postoperative mesenteric panniculitis].

Mesenteric panniculitis can develop in every patient after abdominal surgery. The clinical and pathological signs are usually vague, so different therapeutic approaches are recommended at various stages of the disease. While some authors suggest that these stages are different manifestations of the the same disease, others claim that the various stages represent the progression of a single entity. We report a case of a 65 year-old male patient with mesenteric panniculitis and fibrosis, which developed after laparoscopic sigmoid resection first, and required a Hartmann's procedure finally. The

The CT appearances of sclerosing mesenteritis and associated diseases.

Sclerosing mesenteritis is characterized by non-specific inflammation of the mesenteric fat associated with variable amount of fibrosis. The aetiology is unclear; the pathogenesis is obscure, and even its nomenclature remains variable. It is a rare condition with imaging features that can be mistaken either for a mesenteric neoplasm or for a wide variety of non-neoplastic inflammatory conditions. Knowledge of the imaging features of this condition may prevent unwarranted aggressive therapy. This review discusses the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations of this condition, as well as illustrati

[Panniculitis mesenterialis, a rare disease].

Panniculitis mesenterialis is an illness of the mesenterium of the small intestine and is not familiar to all clinical physicians. The rare reports in the literature mostly describe a good outcome with a few cases ending lethal. Pathologists paying attention to detect panniculitis during postmortem examination report about an incidence of about 1%. This discrepancy may be based on the fact that only extended changes of the mesenterial fat tissue cause symptoms. The pathological base consists in extensive necrosis of fat tissue with fibrosis of the mesenterium. Aetiology is unknown, diagnosis i

[Mesenteric panniculitis].

A 70-year-old patient with a 6 x 6 x 12 cm mass involving the mesentery root is discussed. The pseudotumorous infiltration was detected by ultrasound done because of nonspecific abdominal symptoms and weight loss. Laparoscopic biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of mesenteric panniculitis. The primary histologic criterion is infiltration of the mesenterium by foamy lipid-laden macrophages, clusters of lymphocytes and fibrosis. The majority of cases follow a benign course and need no therapy, but co-existence of lymphoma has been reported. There have been few cases where panniculitis with progressiv
