INTRODUCTION: Postherpetic neuralgia and segmental paresis represent rare complications of herpes zoster infection. Recurrent herpes zoster is also rare and occurs within the first 3 years of the beginning of the illness in only 1.40% of cases but it is generally higher in cases of chronic lymphatic leukemia (3.5%).
CASE REPORT: We presented a patient with lymphatic leukemia who during the remission had 3 episodes of herpes zoster over a year. All of them took different parts of the body. One of these episodes was complicated by postherpetic neuralgia and segmental paresis. A complete recover…

INTRODUCTION: Johan Georg Raeder (1889-1959) was the most eminent Norwegian ophthalmologist in the early decades of the last century. Raeder made significant contributions to our current understanding of glaucoma. He is remembered for a syndrome he described, that of trigeminal nerve neuralgia and/or paresis and incomplete Horner's syndrome (oculopupillary sympathetic paresis).
DISCUSSION: Here, Raeder's biography, scientific contributions, and a thorough review of his original report on paratrigeminal sympathetic paresis are presented. Raeder's syndrome may reflect a lesion of the middle cra…

In the subacute and chronic stages of spastic paresis, stretch-sensitive (spastic) muscle overactivity emerges as a third fundamental mechanism of motor impairment, along with paresis and soft tissue contracture. Part II of this review primarily addresses the pathophysiology of the various forms of spastic overactivity. It is argued that muscle contracture is one of the factors that cause excessive responsiveness to stretch, which in turn aggravates contracture. Excessive responsiveness to stretch also impedes voluntary motor neuron recruitment, a concept termed stretch-sensitive paresis. None…

BACKGROUND: The mild type of anterior spinal artery syndrome (ASAS) is characterized by motor loss with an absent or insignificant sensory d … are presented. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the intrinsic cord disease as the cause of the paresis. We measured the central motor conduction time (CMCT) and the latencies of the tendon reflex (T waves) of the biceps and triceps and those of the F waves of the abductor pollicis brevis and abductor digiti minimi before, 2 weeks after, and 3 months …

A 54-year-old man developed an acquired monocular elevation paresis. Forced lid closure or oculocephalic reflexes failed to elevate the affected eye in contrast to the contralateral eye, which turned fully upward using either maneuver. A mass lesion compressing the lateral aspect of the right oculomotor nerve at the exit of the brainstem was found. The monocular elevation paresis in this patient reflects damage of the oculomotor nerve fascicles that supply the inferior oblique and superior rectus muscles. This case supports the accepted topographical fascicular arrangement of the oculomotor ne…

Between 1974 and 1986 a total of 123 patients with a spastic or spastic athetotic paresis of the upper limb underwent surgery. The interval between surgery and follow-up examination was between one and 13 years. There were 73 cases of hemiparesis and 50 dipareses or tetrapareses due to perinatal cerebral paresis and 35 cases due to a variety of causes. The patients were aged between 6 and 58 years, the majority between 8 and 28 years. All contractures in the arm and hand region were treated at a single sitting. The sole exception to this was surgery for swan-neck deformity of the long fingers.…

This brief report describes the delayed emergence of a profound proximal weakness of both arms following osteophytectomy for cervical spondylosis by the anterior approach. At no time was there any clinical evidence of cord compression. Coincident reversal of the normal lordosis was corrected by traction, and, achieving bony ankylosis in a good position, the patient eventually made a complete recovery.

The results of conservative therapy in 160 patients with so-called idiopathic facial paralysis are reported. In 94.2% of the patients a complete or far extending normalisation took place. In incomplete paralysis the number of patients restored to health was about 96.1%, and 93.3% incomplete paralysis. We treated with salicyl-pyrazon-dervatives or combined with corticosteroids and with antibiotics resp. sulfonamids combined with corticosteroids. Physical therapy was applicated additionally in every case. Recovery did not depend from the sort of medicaments which were chosen.

The value of the radiobiological diagnosis in establishing the localization of a facial palsy resulting from temporal bone fractures has been investigated in 49 cases. Radiological confirmation was found in 21 out of 37 cases of longitudinal fracture and in 11 out of 12 patients (90%) with a transverse fracture. The fracture line was seen by polytomography alone in 1 out of 21 (5%) longitudinal fractures and in 5 out of 11 (45%) transverse fractures. A precise readiological localization of the facial nerve lesion was only possible if the fracutre line was running across the long axis of the py

BACKGROUND: Classification of gait in adults with hereditary spastic paresis is limited. Our aim was to use a previously established system to classify gait.
METHODS: Forty-nine participants were retrospectively recruited and grouped into existing classifications based on sagittal plane knee joint kinematic data extracted from a 3D analysis. Waveform analysis was used to compare the grouped data to determine if and where differences in the subjective classifications appeared.
FINDINGS: Classification of gait patterns in adults with hereditary spastic paresis is successful. Differences betwee…

Herpes zoster is a common viral disorder that typically shows characteristic painful skin lesion. Motor neuropathy rarely complicates herpes zoster infection, and it may be overlooked without suspicion. Here, we report a case of a herpes zoster patient who presented with sciatica and paresis, but without the typical skin lesion. The patient was initially misdiagnosed as having other disorders including trauma or spine lesion. Electrodiagnostic study and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) helped to make an accurate diagnosis and localize the motor nerve involvement of herpes zoster.
