The use of nail care products and procedures to beautify and groom the nails is extremely common. Unfortunately, when improperly used, nail cosmetics can lead to nail diseases, such as paronychia, onycholysis, and brittle nails. Understanding the pathophysiology behind these conditions is an essential step toward better treatment and future prevention allowing patients to enjoy nail adornments while maintaining healthy nails.

From the study of a large series of rabbits with outspoken manifestations of generalized syphilis, lesions of the skin and appendages were found to constitute one of the largest and most varied groups of such affections. The conditions noted consisted of alopecias, onychia and paronychia, and lesions of the skin proper. It was found to be a matter of some difficulty to make a positive diagnosis of syphilitic alopecia, but there were three and possibly four conditions which appeared to be attributable to such an infection. The first of these took the form of a general or local roughening of the…

Clinically significant fungal infections of the upper extremity are uncommon but increasing They are classified based on anatomic location and epidemiology. The anatomic categories that affect the hand include cutaneous, subcutaneous, and deep. Cutaneous infections are caused by organisms that metabolize keratin and can cause serious morbidity but are rarely fatal. Subcutaneous infections are similar to the cutaneous infections and are produced by low virulence organisms. Cutaneous and subcutaneous infections are most common and can be treated by primary care physicians and dermatologists. Dee

inflammatory disorders of the nail unit are frequently encountered in clinical medicine and are a cause of significant morbidity. Psoriasis, lichen planus, chronic paronychia, and trachyonychia will be discussed. An approach to diagnosis and management of these disorders requires knowledge of nail unit anatomy, consideration of associated systemic manifestations, and patient education with respect to prognosis and management of factors that will maximize disease improvement. The nail unit responds with a limited number of signs to disparate clinical entities such that there is some overlap in …

UNLABELLED: The swallowing quality of life (SWAL-QOL) questionnaire is a commonly used tool to assess the impact of dysphagia on quality of life. SWAL-QOL has been translated and validated in many languages. There is no valid dysphagia-specific quality of life tool in Indian languages. Hence, the current study aimed at cultural adaptation, translation, and validation of SWAL-QOL in Kannada (KSWAL-QOL), a south Indian Dravidian language. The original SWAL-QOL was translated into Kannada using the standard translation procedure. A group of 55 participants with oro-pharyngeal dysphagia (clinical

The case report of a 83-year-old woman with lichen ruber ulcerosus is reviewed. Clinically the patient showed extensive ulcerations of the sole of one foot, with synechiae of the toes. In addition, there was subtotal atrophic alopecia of the scalp, vulvar atrophy, and circumscribed cutaneous lesions of lichen planus. The disease started with chronic recurrent paronychiae. The ulcerative defect was successfully treated with mesh grafting, which is the therapy of choice.

Subungual hemorrhage, onychauxis, onychogryphosis, mycotic infections, onychia and paronychia are common toenail disorders in the elderly. The many contributing factors include impaired vision, changes in gait, past foot conditions and neurovascular disease. Hyperkeratotic disorders are secondary to external or internal pressure. Many of these foot problems are chronic conditions and require continuing management for relief. If improperly treated, some conditions may lead to amputation.

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (S.M.) is a Gram-negative bacillus, naturally resistant to cephalosporins and carbapenems, which can colonize different sites and may be responsible for serious infections for which treatment is a real challenge. This was rarely reported as cutaneous pathogenic organism causing cellulitis-like lesions, paronychia, mucocutaneous ulcers and ecthyma gangrenosum in immunocompromised individuals. We report a case of non-healing legs ulcer infected with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia.

A spectrum of reactions to free formaldehyde containing nail hardeners is presented. These include inflammatory and noninflammatory onycholysis, paronychia, chromonychia, nail plate shedding, and pterygium inversum unguis as well as satellite reactions on the skin and mucous membranes. Primary irritants are more common than allergic reactions. Nail cosmetic products containing free formaldehyde are available to the consumer, but federal guidelines dictate their labeling, acceptable concentration, and usage.

Pigmentary nail changes may have a variety of causes, e. g., chronic inflammation, and occur more often in patients of African descent compared to Caucasians. Subungual malignant melanoma is the most important differential diagnosis and must be ruled out in any case. Dermatoscopy might be helpful. If no biopsy is taken, clinical follow-ups are necessary at short intervals. In case of chronic paronychia, optimization of occupational skin protection measures may contribute to the healing process.

Retronychia is an incomplete form of nail shedding that leads to embedding of the nail into the proximal nail fold and subsequent inflammation. Patients present with persistent paronychia in the setting of disrupted nail growth. Other nail changes may be present. Simple avulsion is curative, and unlike other forms of ingrown nails, it does not tend to recur. We report 2 cases of retronychia that were associated with distal onycholysis and subungual hematoma, respectively. Both were successfully treated with nail avulsion.

Bazex syndrome is a paraneoplastic condition that is most frequently associated with squamous cell carcinoma of the upper aerodigestive tract. The lesions affect acral areas of the skin, including hands, feet, ears, nose, and, to a lesser extent, elbows and knees. Lesions mimic psoriasis and dermatitis. Paronychia and nail dystrophy are frequent. Bullous lesions have been reported only rarely. We report a patient with Bazex syndrome with predominantly bullous lesions that mimicked a primary autoimmune bullous disorder.

This document summarizes current knowledge about diagnosis and treatment of candidiasis affecting the skin and oral mucosa. Several clinical forms of mucocutaneous candidiasis are distinguished depending on a patient's age and infected site, e.g. Candida intertrigo, erythema mycoticum infantile, erosio interdigitalis blastomycetica, candidal paronychia and onychia, Candida onychomycosis, and oral candidiasis. The diagnosis of candidiasis is confirmed by observation of mycelial forms on microscopic examination. Since Candida yeasts (especially C. albicans) are normal inhabitants of the skin and…
