Parotid gland tumours account for 80% of all salivary gland neoplasms, 20% of these are malignant, but in daily clinical practice most parotid masses are operated on before obtaining the final histological diagnosis. This clinical setting further complicates the critical point of parotid surgery, which is the management of the facial nerve. In the present study, data were evaluated referring to 540 patients who underwent parotidectomy for a mass which was discovered to be a benign (470 cases) or a malignant (70 cases) neoplasm, between November 1994 and December 2007, at our Institution. The diagnosis of a parotid mass usually depends on thorough history taking and physical examination. Diagnostic modalities, including ultrasonographic examinations, computed tomography and magnetic resonance images, may also provide substantial information but their accuracy for diagnosis is sometimes questionable, especially in differentiating some rare neoplasms. First branchial cleft cysts (FBCCs) are rare causes of parotid swelling and comprise less than 1% of all branchial anomalies. They are frequently misdiagnosed due to their rarity and unfamiliar clinical signs and symptoms. We presen

Tumors of the head as well as other distant tumors may metastasize to the lymph nodes of the parotid gland. Metastases from head malignancies are much more frequent than those arising in distant organs. The authors report their experience in three cases of parotid lymph nodal metastases from head neoplasms: nasal septum carcinoma, left external auditory canal carcinoma and right suborbital skin melanoma. In two cases nodal metastases appeared after the treatment of the primary malignant tumor; in one case metastases were simultaneous to it. All patients were treated surgically (total parotidec

Warthin tumor (papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum, adenolymphoma) is a benign neoplasm from salivary glands and is almost restricted to the parotid gland and the periparotid lymph nodes. Its etiopathogenesis has been associated with tobacco smoke. Several authors believe that the tumor develops from heterotopic salivary gland tissues or through the attraction of a heavy lymphoid reaction. Most cases involve the lower pole or the tail of the parotid. Since its description, a few cases have been reported in other sites, like the submandibular salivary gland. This study aimed to describe a rare

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis that primarily affects the lungs. Although TB can affect many organs, involvement of the head and neck is extremely rare and involvement of the salivary glands is even rarer. Clinical diagnosis is challenging and may be misdiagnosed, as it mimics neoplasms on physical exams and imaging. In this paper, we present a case of parotid tuberculosis in a 28-year-old man who presented with a painful left parotid mass, loss of appetite, fever, and weight loss for six months. Suspicion of infection arose, and treatment began with int

A case of multifocal nodular oncocytic hyperplasia (MNOH) of the bilateral parotid gland is presented. An 80-year-old woman was admitted to hospital because of painless swellings in bilateral parotid regions. Histologically, the nodular lesion had incomplete capsules and engulfed the surrounding parotid gland at the periphery. The lesions were mostly composed of clear cells, while the peripheries of the lesions had typical oncocytic cells with abundant fine granules. The histological existence of the clear cell component in the lesions led to misdiagnoses of other clear cell neoplasms. However

Warthin tumor is the second most common benign parotid neoplasm. Its association with non-salivary gland neoplasms has been sporadically reported. We reviewed clinical records of Warthin tumor diagnosed on aspiration cytology and surgical pathology to determine if there is any association with other extra-salivary gland malignant neoplasms. Computer search was made for all cases of Warthin tumor diagnosed in the parotid gland by aspiration cytology and surgical pathology at our institution between January 2007 and August 2016. Clinical records of all cases were reviewed for any associated mali

Mammary analog secretory carcinoma is a primary salivary gland neoplasm with histologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular features identical to those of secretory carcinoma of the breast. Similar neoplasms have now been reported to occur in various nonmammary sites including the parotid gland, submandibular gland, sinuses, lip, skin, thyroid gland, and lung. We report, to our knowledge, the first example of a primary vulvar neoplasm with pathologic features identical to secretory carcinoma of the breast and an ETV6-NTRK3 fusion.

Osteoma is a slow-growing benign osseous neoplasm. The mandible and paranasal sinuses are the most commonly affected sites in the maxillofacial region. Clinically, this neoplasm may be silent for years without any symptoms and diagnosed only when it becomes big enough or observed coincidentally during radiological investigations. In this paper, a case of peripheral mandibular osteoma in a 66-year-old male patient is presented. The patient was referred to our ENT clinic with a suspected parotid neoplasm because of a swelling in the right preauricular region.

Unilateral hypermetabolic lesion of parotid gland demonstrated on PET/CT imaging may originate from a large spectrum of benign or malignant processes, such as adenoma, Warthin's tumor, oncocytic neoplasm, lymphoma, and primary or secondary malignancy of the gland. Bilateral and multifocal parotid gland disease is less common but possible because of the known characteristics of Warthin's tumors. The authors present such a case that was incidentally documented during PET/CT evaluation of solitary pulmonary nodule.

The authors report on a case of a granular cell tumor of the parotid gland, which constitutes an extremely rare neoplasm. The infiltrative growth of the tumor may pose the question of malignancy, especially on frozen section. The objective of this report was to function as a reminder of this entity for every pathologist that deals with a biopsy from a lesion of the parotid gland, and furthermore, to keep the unwary away from a possible diagnostic pitfall. A meticulous search of the literature revealed only 4 similar cases.

Papillary Cystadenoma Lymphomatosum or Warthin's tumour is a unique neoplasm arising almost exclusively in the parotid salivary gland and is composed of oncocytic epithelium with a prominent lymphoid infiltrate. The tumor is usually asymptomatic and may be associated with varying degrees of pain not necessarily an indication of malignant transformation in the tumour. The tumour is managed easily by surgical excision. This article presents a typical case arising in the right parotid gland of a 73-year-old male with review of literature of this rare tumour.

Salivary gland tumors are relatively uncommon neoplasms that represent less than 5% of head and neck tumors, and about 90% are in the parotid gland. The wide variety of histologies and tumor characteristics makes diagnosis and treatment challenging. In the present study, Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) was used to discriminate the pathological regions of patient-derived biopsies of parotid neoplasms by metabolomic and lipidomic profiles. Fresh frozen parotid tissues were analyzed by MALDI time-of-flight (TOF) MSI, both in positive and negative

Brain MRI in an 82-year-old man with presumed Bell's palsy revealed a clinically unsuspected right parotid gland mass but no other acute findings. Biopsy revealed poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. Staging F-FDG PET/CT revealed an FDG-avid parotid mass, abnormal FDG uptake along the course of the facial nerve from mass to skull base, and multiple FDG-avid right level II neck lymph nodes and hepatic metastases. The PET/CT findings and prolonged clinical course suggest that diffuse perineural spread of tumor from a smoldering parotid neoplasm, and not idiopathic Bell's palsy, was responsible

Teratomas are germ cell tumors typically originating in the gonads. Extragonadal occurrences, particularly in the parotid gland, are exceedingly rare. Due to their nonspecific clinical presentation, these tumors often pose a diagnostic challenge. We report a rare case of a mature cystic teratoma of the parotid gland in an 18-year-old female, who presented with a painless, slow-growing mass in the right postauricular region persisting for over a decade. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a lobulated mass with high signal intensity on T1- and T2-weighted sequences. The patient underwe

Hemangiomas represent one of the most common childhood neoplasms. They are often managed conservatively, requiring numerous years for spontaneous involution. No effective medical treatment has been reported for children with large, deforming hemangiomas of the parotid gland and overlying cheek. The authors retrospectively studied 17 children who underwent surgical resection of parotid hemangiomas at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles from 1997 to 2003. All 17 patients had improvements in facial asymmetry and deformity. There were no major complications. Minor complications included hematoma (11.8

Extracapsular dissection (ECD) was introduced for the removal of superficial and small benign parotid tumors. According to a recent proposal, ECD is reserved for tumors that are 3 cm or less, mobile, and close to the parotid borders in cases of pleomorphic adenoma. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of ECD for treatment of benign parotid tumors also in cases of tumors that were larger than 3 cm and deeper. All ECD for benign parotid neoplasms conducted between 2007 and 2017 were reviewed. The lesions included were limited to primary parotid tumors and categorized by Quer pro

Parotid neoplasm in children is very rare, and most of these tumors are benign. Parotid enlargement in children is usually caused by infection or inflammation. We report a case of a 12-year-old boy who presented with the initial manifestation of bilateral parotid enlargement. He complained of two weeks of parotid swelling, during which the tumor gradually increased in size as he battled a monthlong on-and-off fever. An intravenous antibiotic was administered, as the first diagnosis was infection. Imaging studies of the swelling displayed features of infection, which was not resolved by the ant

Preoperative diagnosis of malignant salivary gland tumors is difficult as radiological imaging procedures have low sensitivity rate for detecting malignancy in parotid gland tumors. With careful and detailed analysis of cytological features, guided fine needle aspiration cytology can prove to be a reliable diagnostic modality that can help in differential diagnosis of cystic parotid malignancies from cystic benign tumors and non-neoplastic lesions. Papillary cystic variant of acinic cell carcinoma is a rare, cystic, primary neoplasm of salivary gland that occurs commonly in parotid. The tumor

It is difficult to distinguish nodular fasciitis (NF) from other neoplasm of the parotid gland, especially pleomorphic adenoma (PA) by fine needle aspiration cytology. A 39-year-old female noticed a mass in the parotid region. The aspirate material showed cohesive parts composed of the cells that had oval or spindle-shaped nuclei and relatively abundant cytoplasm and some cells with plasmacytoid features. The background substance was fibromyxoid. PA was diagnosed based on the cytologic findings. Subsequently, parotidectomy was performed and NF was diagnosed based on histologic and immunohistoc
