Bilateral Synchronous Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the Parotid Gland.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of the parotid; however, its synchronous occurrence in both of the parotid glands is extremely rare. Herein, we presented a case of 53-year-old man with bilateral synchronous mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland treated with surgery. The patient mainly complained of a painless mass in the left parotid gland. A mass located in the right parotid gland was incidentally detected by imaging. Based on cytopathology, left total parotidectomy was performed while preserving the facial nerve with ipsilateral neck dissection, and 5 week

Parotid hypersalivation after inferior salivatory nucleus glutamate/NMDA receptor excitation in the rat.

Although salivation is essential during eating behavior, little is known about the brainstem centers that directly control the salivary glands. With regard to the inferior salivatory nucleus (ISN), the site of origin of the parasympathetic preganglionic cell bodies that innervate the parotid glands, previous anatomical studies have located it within the rostrodorsal medullary reticular formation. However, to date there is no functional data that shows the secretory nature of the somas grouped in this region. To activate only the somas and rule out the activation of the efferent fibers from and

Reconstruction of the Parotid Duct.

The most common causes of parotid duct lesions are injuries with sharp instruments. Late alterations after such lesions lead to esthetic defects and complicates the treatment. This case report presents an alternative surgical technique for late reparation of the parotid duct. A 31-year-old male patient was admitted with a history of physical aggression by a glass bottle, resulting in cutting injuries in face and drainage of extraoral transparent fluid from the buccinatory region lesion Antibiotic therapy was initiated immediately, and the surgery was performed nine days after the incident. The

[Intraparotid first branchial arch cyst: complex diagnostic and therapeutic process].

First branchial arch cysts are uncommon. Therefore, together with its variable clinical and age presentation they are often misdiagnosed at first. The treatment is surgical, requiring a correct procedure to avoid future recurrences. In this paper we describe a typical case of first branchial arch cyst in which as described in other reports, we first made several misdiagnoses and therefore an inadequate treatment and lastly, with the correct diagnosis, we performed a meticulous complete excision under facial nerve monitoring.

A rare benign parotid gland tumor: angiomyolipoma.

Angiomyolipomas are benign neoplasms composed of smooth muscle, vasculature, and mature adipose tissue, which most commonly occur in the kidney and located in the head and neck region. A very rare neoplasm, there are only 3 cases of angiomyolipoma in the parotid gland that have been reported to date. Here, we report a case of a 38-year-old man who had a slow-growing mass in the parotid gland for the past 7 years. The results of a physical examination revealed a rubbery mass that was 2.5 cm in diameter in the below superficial lobe of the left parotid gland. A computed tomographic scan showed a

Sialolipoma of the parotid gland.

A 33-year-old male patient with a slow-growing, painless, well-circumscribed soft tissue mass on the left parotid region is presented. The clinical impression was that of a benign salivary gland tumor. The tumor was situated in the superficial lobe of the gland, and a superficial parotidectomy was performed, with preservation of the facial nerve. Histopathologic examination results revealed a sialolipoma of the parotid gland and a lesion that consisted of both mature adipose tissue and glandular elements. Sialolipomas share similar clinical features with conventional lipomas of the salivary gl

Solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma and granulomatous sialadenitis of the parotid gland preceding a B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

A patient with swelling of the left parotid gland of four-months' duration, sicca syndrome (xerophthalmia and xerostomia) and a history of progressive systemic sclerosis with an incomplete form of the CREST syndrome was referred to our department. On ultrasound a parotid mass of reduced echogenicity without any enlarged cervical lymph nodes was found. Ultrasonographically guided fine-needle biopsy could not provide any definitive diagnosis. After partial parotidectomy with complete tumor removal the histologic exam showed an extramedullary plasmacytoma with concurrent non-necrotizing granuloma

Carcinoma showing thymus-like elements (CASTLE) with amyloid deposition in the parotid gland.

Carcinoma showing thymus-like elements (CASTLE) is a rare tumor that commonly occurs in the thyroid gland. Extrathyroidal CASTLE is rarer, and only 11 cases of CASTLE of major salivary glands have been reported to date. We report the first case of amyloid deposition in parotid CASTLE. A 63-year-old man presented with a slowly growing mass in the left parotid region. Computed tomography revealed an approximately 28 × 23 mm mass lesion in the left parotid gland, and squamous cell carcinoma was suspected on biopsy. The patient underwent a parotidectomy with neck dissection. Morphologically, the t

Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Infection within a Warthin Tumor: A Case Report and Literature Review.

CONTEXT: The co-existence of tuberculosis and a Warthin tumor in the parotid gland is extremely rare. CASE REPORT: A 46-year-old male presented with a mass in the left parotid region of 6-month duration. The patient's history was only remarkable for a facial swelling, night sweats and a 38.5 C° fever. A 2 × 3-cm mobile, non-tender, mass with a smooth surface was palpated on left parotid tail. CT examination showed a well-defined 30 mm in diameter tumor mass in the left superficial lobe of the parotid gland. A superficial parotidectomy was performed. The final pathological diagnosis of the par

Intraparotid Facial Nerve Schwannoma Mimicking Primary Parotid Neoplasm.

The following report is of a 36-year-old male who presented with a growing mass in the region of the parotid gland. Initial fine needle aspiration biopsy suggested a primary neoplasm of the parotid gland, but subsequent frozen section analysis intraoperatively demonstrated a schwannoma of the facial nerve. An intracapsular enucleation of the schwannoma was performed in order to preserve the fibers of the motor nerve.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising in Warthin's tumor: a case report.

Malignant transformation of the epithelial component of Warthin's tumor is extremely rare. We describe our experience of mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising in Warthin's tumor of the parotid gland in a 35 year old female. The tumor removed from the parotid region was well encapsulated and histologically comprised ofmucoepidermoid carcinoma along with areas of Warthin's tumor. The pathogenesis and differential diagnosis of this rare occurrence have been discussed.

Solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma in the oropharynx: advantages of intensity-modulated radiation therapy.

We report a case of a 59-year-old man with solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma in his oropharynx. Because the diagnosis is rare and there is only limited experience in the literature based on retrospective data, the optimal planning target volume and optimal dose of radiation therapy (RT) are still controversial. The frequently discussed problem is the necessity of first echelon lymph node irradiation because it is associated with a higher rate of complications such as xerostomia caused by damage to salivary glands. In order to prevent late toxicity, intensity-modulated RT with the use of sim

Oral cavity and oropharynx squamous cell carcinoma with metastasis to the parotid lymph nodes.

To increase awareness of the potential of oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) to metastasize to the parotid region. We retrospectively reviewed patients who had undergone parotidectomy for metastatic oral or oropharyngeal SCC at a single tertiary care facility from January 1988 to January 2004. Exclusion criteria were a history of cutaneous SCC of head and neck or extension of primary tumor into the parotid gland. Twelve patients met study criteria. Parotid metastasis represented the initial disease manifestation in 4 cases. In 1 case, parotid metastasis presented synchronousl

A rare case of parotid gland lipoma arising from the deep lobe of the parotid gland.

Lipomas are the most commonly encountered benign mesenchymal tumors, but their occurrence in the head and neck is rare, even more at the level of the parotid region where they can be found nearby the parotid capsule, inside the capsule, or within the gland. In addition, lipomas involving the deep parotid lobe are extremely unusual. That is why lipomas are not often considered for differential diagnosis of parotid lumps. Concerning diagnostic tools, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is nowadays considered as the main imaging examination for parotid lipomas due to a characteristic signal intensit

Dystrophic calcification: A rare pediatric parotid mass.

Dystrophic calcification, the ectopic deposition of calcium in previously damaged or inflamed tissues, is an uncommon finding in the head and neck. Only a few cases have been reported in the parotidomasseteric region, and all of them have been located within and adjacent to the masseter. We present a case of dystrophic calcification occurring entirely within the parotid gland in a 7-year-old girl without apparent inciting inflammation, infection, or trauma. Our patient's presentation highlights the diagnostic challenge associated with parotid masses in the pediatric population. To our knowledg

Synchronous unilateral basal cell adenoma of the parotid gland: A case report.

The current study reports the case of a 68-year-old male who presented with a 4-month history of a painless slow-growing mass in the left parotid region. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed two independent, round lesions in the superficial and deep lobes of the parotid gland on the left side, respectively. A total parotidectomy was performed and basal cell adenomas (BCAs) were identified by histopathological examination. At the 6-month follow-up examination, no sign of recurrence was found. This study describes the clinical features of a rare case of synchronous unilateral BCA in the parotid g

A case of preoperative "first-bite syndrome" associated with mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland.

First-bite syndrome, characterized by excruciating pain in the parotid region after the first few bites of food, can be seen after surgery of the parapharyngeal space. Herein we describe a patient with no prior surgical history who presented with facial pain consistent with first-bite syndrome. Imaging and ultrasound-guided FNA revealed a nonpalpable mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland, which was removed surgically with facial nerve preservation. After surgical intervention, the patient's symptoms resolved. An extensive literature review demonstrated that this is the first descriptio

[Parotid gland Warthin's tumor combined with actinomycosis].

The authors describe the diagnostic problems and difficulties of treatment of Warthin's tumor combined with actinomycosis. A 48-year-old woman was presented with a mass in the left parotid region and paresis of the lower left palpebra. The CT, echography, parotid X-ray findings supposed a neoplasm of the left parotid gland which was proved by intraoperative freezing histology. The ramus of the mandible was involved in the process. Total parotidectomy and partial mandiblectomy were performed, with sacrifice of the facial nerve, followed by nerve reconstruction. The final histological evaluation

Parotid selective lymphadenectomy in malignant melanoma.

Malignant melanoma of the head and neck can metastasize to lymph nodes within the parotid gland. Selective lymphadenectomy is the modern method of staging regional lymph node basins in clinically localized melanoma. This procedure involves intraoperative lymphatic mapping and directed, selective removal of the first draining nodes or sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs). Historically, the assessment of parotid lymph nodes would involve a superficial parotidectomy with facial nerve dissection. Since 1993, 28 patients with localized melanoma of the head and neck have demonstrated lymphatic drainage to pa
