Effect of curcumin on the gut microbiota of patients with ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease and healthy participants.

Curcumin exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, but clinical evidence is limited, in part because of its low systemic bioavailability. Nevertheless, its limited absorption may favor local activity in the gut, where it could influence inflammatory bowel disease via microbiota modulation. This study assesses the impact of curcumin on gut microbiota diversity, as well as clinical and biochemical parameters in patients with ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease in remission and healthy individuals. In a single-center, open-label, single-arm study, 29 male participants aged 18–65 were included. P

The COMT rs4680 SNP participates in the regulation of the arousal threshold in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether the functional catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) rs4680 polymorphism is related to a predicted low respiratory arousal threshold (LAT) phenotype in adults with polysomnography-confirmed obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and to assess selected dopaminergic pathway-related polymorphisms. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, 144 adults with OSA underwent polysomnography. LAT was estimated non-invasively using the Edwards criteria based on apnea-hypopnea index < 30 events/h, nadir oxygen saturation > 82.5%, and hypopnea fraction > 58.3%, with LAT define

Population Pharmacokinetics of siRNA JNJ-73763989 in Healthy Participants and Patients With Chronic Hepatitis B.

JNJ-73763989 is a combination product consisting of two N-acetylgalactosamine-conjugated short-interfering RNA triggers (JNJ-73763976 and JNJ-73763924) that are in development as a potential treatment for chronic hepatitis B virus infection. A population pharmacokinetic model for JNJ-73763989 was developed based on pooled data from seven clinical studies to characterize the plasma pharmacokinetics of the short-interfering RNAs following subcutaneous administration. Additionally, simulations of liver (target organ) exposure using the final population pharmacokinetic model in conjunction with pr

A model to address healthcare gaps and poor research participation in Hispanic patients with Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD), a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, manifests with motor and non-motor symptoms. Despite similar incidence, in the US, disease management of Hispanic patients with PD is poorer than that of White non-Hispanics, and their participation in clinical trials does not reflect expected values (well below 5% vs. expected values around 20%). Together with other evidence, these observations are expressions of poor healthcare in Hispanic patients with PD, suggesting underutilization of proper healthcare, social and economic disadvantage, and other factors. The scant partic

Family participation in dignity interventions for patients with cancer receiving palliative care: A scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Cancer patients face significant physical and psychological challenges, often requiring assistance due to limited self-care and mobility. As primary caregivers, families play a critical role in their support. Recent research has highlighted family participation in dignity interventions aimed at enhancing dignity, value, and meaning in life, especially for terminal-stage patients. However, there is a lack of comprehensive synthesis and evaluation of the specific characteristics of family participation in these interventions. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following the Joan

Upper Limb Apraxia Is Related to Role Participation Among Patients With Mild to Moderate Stroke.

IMPORTANCE: Poststroke, patients often experience decreased role participation, partially because of cognitive impairment. However, the potential relationship between upper limb apraxia (ULA), a cognitive dysfunction, and role participation remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether ULA is related to role participation among patients with mild to moderate stroke. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Randomly selected Spanish public primary care centers. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred fifty-three patients with mild to moderate poststroke. OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Role participation was as

Patients' Experiences Participating Within an Interdisciplinary Primary Care Program for Low Back Pain.

A common recommendation to improve the management of low back pain (LBP) is the use of interdisciplinary teams. However, many challenges remain in establishing interdisciplinary care, particularly in community-based primary care settings. This study explored patients' experiences with interdisciplinary care for LBP using an applied phenomenological research approach. Semistructured open-ended interviews were conducted with fifteen adults enrolled in a 6-month interdisciplinary LBP program within an integrated care network. The analysis included detailed descriptions of participants' experience

Severe Hypertriglyceridemia in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Participating in the AMD Annals Initiative.

Background: Familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS) is a rare inherited condition due to lipoprotein lipase deficiency, characterized by hyperchylomicronemia and severe hypertriglyceridemia. Diagnosis is often delayed, thus increasing the risk of acute pancreatitis and hospitalization. Hypertriglyceridemia is a common finding in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), who may harbor FCS among the most severe forms. Aim of the Study: We investigated the prevalence and clinical characteristics associated with severe hypertriglyceridemia in a range indicative of FCS, in a large population of subject

Home-Based Cardiac Rehabilitation Among Patients Unwilling to Participate in Hospital-Based Programs.

PURPOSE: Asynchronous home-based cardiac rehabilitation (HBCR) is a viable alternative to center-based cardiac rehabilitation (CBCR). However, to achieve significant functional improvement, a high level of adherence and activity must be achieved. The effectiveness of HBCR among patients who actively avoid CBCR has not been effectively investigated. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the HBCR program among patients unwilling to participate in CBCR. METHODS: A randomized prospective study enrolled 45 participants to a 6-mo HBCR program and the remaining 24 were allocated to re

Reconfiguration dynamics of a language-and-memory network in healthy participants and patients with temporal lobe epilepsy.

Current theoretical frameworks suggest that human behaviors are based on strong and complex interactions between cognitive processes such as those underlying language and memory functions in normal and neurological populations. We were interested in assessing the dynamic cerebral substrate of such interaction between language and declarative memory, as the composite function, in healthy controls (HC, N = 19) and patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE, N = 16). Our assumption was that the language and declarative memory integration is based on a language-and-memory network (LMN) that is dyna

Stigma and psychological distress among pediatric participants in the FD/MAS Alliance Patient Registry.

BACKGROUND: Stigma, both enacted and internalized, is part of the illness experience of many chronic conditions / diseases and has been found to increase psychological distress, lower self-esteem, and impact social engagement lowering quality of life (QOL). Stigma among pediatric patients is of particular concern due to its potential impact on identity formation. Using patient data from the online FD/MAS Alliance Patient Registry (FDMASAPR), this study seeks to 1) determine levels of enacted and self-stigma in a pediatric population of fibrous dysplasia (FD) / McCune Albright syndrome (MAS) pa

Referral and participation in cardiac rehabilitation of patients following acute coronary syndrome; lessons learned.

PURPOSE: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) after hospitalization for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) has shown to reduce mortality, readmissions, and improve quality of life. CR is recommended by international guidelines but previous studies have shown low participation rates. Systematic CR referral might improve CR participation. METHODS: The present study evaluates CR referral and CR participation of patients hospitalized for ACS in 2017 and treated according to local protocol, which includes systematic CR referral. Participation rate was divided into a group that finished the CR program and drop o

Health-related quality of life in patients with multiple myeloma participating in a multidisciplinary rehabilitation program.

Patients with multiple myeloma (MM) report high symptom burden and functional disabilities resulting in impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Effective evidence-based rehabilitation guidelines are needed for patients with MM to improve HRQoL. The primary aim of this study was to investigate HRQoL in patients with rehabilitation needs living their everyday life. Patients with MM in remission attended a 12-week multidisciplinary rehabilitation program including a 5-day residential course, home-based exercise and a 2-day follow-up course. The patients were referred by the treating haem

Patient Perspectives on Declining to Participate in Home-Based Cardiac Rehabilitation: A MIXED-METHODS STUDY.

PURPOSE: A minority of eligible patients participate in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs. Availability of home-based CR programs improves participation in CR, yet many continue to decline to enroll. We sought to explore among patients the rationale for declining to participate in CR even when a home-based CR program is available. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods evaluation of reasons for declining to participate in CR. Between August 2015 and August 2017, a total of 630 patients were referred for CR evaluation during index hospitalization (San Francisco VA Medical Center). Three hund

Participation and mental well-being of mothers of home-living patients with spinal muscular atrophy.

Proximal spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) causes severe physical limitations but also has a major impact on the lives of parents. The aim of this study was to investigate participation and mental well-being (burden, emotional distress and satisfaction with participation) of parents of home-living patients with SMA. Caregiver burden was assessed with the Caregiver Strain Index, emotional distress with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and satisfaction with participation with the Utrecht Scale for Evaluation of Rehabilitation-Participation. Because the majority of parents were mothers of ho

Perceptions of illness as predictive factors for perceived stress in patients participating in a cardiac rehabilitation program.

Psychosocial risk factors, such as perceived stress, not only increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, but also act as barriers for treatment adherence and cardiac rehabilitation. In this study, we examined the predictive role of perceptions for illness to perceived stress in Iranian patients participating in a cardiac rehabilitation program. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2017 to determine correlations of demographic variables and domains of illness perception with perceived stress, and to develop a predictive model for perceived stress. In total, 150 patients with cardiovascula

Cortisol and Subjective Stress Responses to Acute Psychosocial Stress in Fibromyalgia Patients and Control Participants.

OBJECTIVE: Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis dysfunction may play a role in fibromyalgia (FM) pathogenesis but it remains understudied in this disorder. Furthermore, early childhood adversities (ECA) are common in FM, but whether they moderate stress reactivity is unknown. Hence, we investigated cortisol and subjective responses to acute psychosocial stress in FM and controls, while adjusting for ECA. METHODS: Twenty-seven female FM patients and 24 age-matched female controls were recruited in a tertiary care center and through advertisements, respectively. The Childhood Trauma Questionnair
