Category selectivity as a window into behavioral relevance.

Ritchie et al. (this issue) argue that a deeper understanding of occipitotemporal cortex (OTC) requires shifting emphasis from category selectivity to behavioral relevance. They suggest that focusing on categories such as faces, bodies, or scenes is too narrow and overlooks how OTC supports flexible, goal-directed behavior. We agree that linking neural representations to behavior is essential but caution against treating category selectivity and behavioral relevance as opposing views. Category selectivity provides valuable insight into how cortical representations are organized to support beha

Parafoveal processing and transposed-letter effects in dyslexic reading.

During parafoveal processing, skilled readers encode letter identity independently of letter position (Johnson et al., 2007). In the current experiment, we examined orthographic parafoveal processing in readers with dyslexia. Specifically, the eye movements of skilled readers and adult readers with dyslexia were recorded during a boundary paradigm experiment (Rayner, 1975). Parafoveal previews were either identical to the target word (e.g., nearly), a transposed-letter preview (e.g., enarly), or a substituted-letter preview (e.g., acarly). Dyslexic and non-dyslexic readers demonstrated orthogr

Does automatic human face categorization depend on head orientation?

Whether human categorization of visual stimuli as faces is optimal for full-front views, best revealing diagnostic features but lacking depth cues, remains largely unknown. To address this question, we presented 16 human observers with unsegmented natural images of different living and non-living objects at a fast rate (f = 12 Hz), with natural face images appearing at f/9 = 1.33 Hz. Faces posing all full-front or at ¾ side view angles appeared in separate sequences. Robust frequency-tagged 1.33 Hz (and harmonic) occipito-temporal electroencephalographic (EEG) responses reflecting face-selecti

Visual features drive the category-specific impairments on categorization tasks in a patient with object agnosia.

Object and scene recognition both require mapping of incoming sensory information to existing conceptual knowledge about the world. A notable finding in brain-damaged patients is that they may show differentially impaired performance for specific categories, such as for "living exemplars". While numerous patients with category-specific impairments have been reported, the explanations for these deficits remain controversial. In the current study, we investigate the ability of a brain injured patient with a well-established category-specific impairment of semantic memory to perform two categoriz

Separate mechanisms for number reading and word reading: Evidence from selective impairments.

Do number reading and word reading use the same cognitive mechanisms? We examined this question through the looking glass of dissociations between impairments in number and word reading. We report two women with selective deficits in number reading, who read words normally. An examination of their impairment pattern indicated that the specific locus of their number reading deficits is in processes that handle the number's structure: both were impaired in parsing a digit string into triplets, and one of them was also impaired in generating the number's verbal structure. In contrast to their str

Why are digits easier to identify than letters?

Beginning with Dejerine's report of pure alexia in 1892, numerous researchers have noted that individuals with acquired impairments of reading may show spared digit identification performance. This digit advantage has also been found in unimpaired adult readers across a number of tasks, and five main hypotheses have been proposed to explain how it arises. In this paper I consider these hypotheses in the context of recent theories of a unified alphanumeric character identification system, and evaluate them according to relevant empirical evidence. Despite some promising findings, none of the hy

Orthographic context and the acquisition of orthographic knowledge in normal and dyslexic readers.

We tested the hypothesis that the acquisition of orthographic knowledge of novel words that are presented in an indistinct context, that is a context with many orthographically similar words, would be more difficult for dyslexic than for normal readers. Participants were 19 Dutch dyslexic children (mean age 10;9 years), 20 age-matched and 20 reading-age-matched normal readers. During training the children repeatedly read a series of nonwords in a distinct (KWOG with KWES and SNAR) and an indistinct (KWOG with KWOS and KROG) orthographic context. At posttest, the dyslexic children were slower b

Visual target detection is not impaired in dyslexic readers.

In two previous studies we assessed a difficulty of dyslexic readers with letter string processing by using variants of the partial report paradigm, e.g., Averbach and Coriell [Averbach, E., & Coriell, A. S. (1961). Short-term memory in vision. Bell Systems Technical Journal, 40, 309-328] which requires report of a letter name in response to a position cue. The poor dyslexic performance was interpreted as evidence for a visual-attentional deficit of dyslexic readers. In the present study, we avoided verbal report by using a task which only required the detection of predefined targets (letters

DRC: a dual route cascaded model of visual word recognition and reading aloud.

This article describes the Dual Route Cascaded (DRC) model, a computational model of visual word recognition and reading aloud. The DRC is a computational realization of the dual-route theory of reading, and is the only computational model of reading that can perform the 2 tasks most commonly used to study reading: lexical decision and reading aloud. For both tasks, the authors show that a wide variety of variables that influence human latencies influence the DRC model's latencies in exactly the same way. The DRC model simulates a number of such effects that other computational models of readi

Covert face recognition in prosopagnosia: a review.

Prosopagnosia, a spectacular face agnosia, is generally detected and discussed on the basis of explicit or overt performance of the subjects. However, recent observations suggest that an overt response is probably not sufficient to determine what is and what is not preserved in the cognitive processing of faces by prosopagnosia. Indeed, signs of covert knowledge have been evidenced in some, but not all, subjects, indicating that they are still able to use representations they cannot use overtly. Empirical data, showing that the nature of prosopagnosia is a more complex phenomenon than has been

Negative hysteresis occurs in simple color matching but such serial dependence effects are abolished by perceptual binding.

Color perception entails multiple processing levels. Perceptual dynamics in color vision and the role of stimulus history can be studied using the phenomenon of hysteresis, well-known in the framework of physical dynamical systems. In perceptual hysteresis paradigms, stimuli change gradually, leading to competition between perceptual stabilization (positive hysteresis) or early change to an alternative percept (negative hysteresis). The former dominates in most perceptual domains, such as motion, letter or emotion recognition. The question remains whether positive hysteresis dominates in color

Flexible usage of object and global scene information during human scene categorization.

The human ability to categorize scenes has been related to the usage of both object and global scene information. In three experiments (carried out in 2024), we compared the utility of these sources of information and assessed the time course of their usage by reducing scenes to single objects or visualizations of global scene information (textures). Experiment 1 showed that both types of information were of comparable utility under controlled viewing conditions and could be used concurrently. However, a simple combination of object and global scene information was not sufficient to explain fa

Information content and temporal structure of face selective local field potentials frequency bands in IT cortex.

Sensory stimulation triggers synchronized bioelectrical activity in the brain across various frequencies. This study delves into network-level activities, specifically focusing on local field potentials as a neural signature of visual category representation. Specifically, we studied the role of different local field potential frequency oscillation bands in visual stimulus category representation by presenting images of faces and objects to three monkeys while recording local field potential from inferior temporal cortex. We found category selective local field potential responses mainly for a

A meta-analysis of letter-sound integration: Assimilation and accommodation in the superior temporal gyrus.

Despite being a relatively new cultural phenomenon, the ability to perform letter-sound integration is readily acquired even though it has not had time to evolve in the brain. Leading theories of how the brain accommodates literacy acquisition include the neural recycling hypothesis and the assimilation-accommodation hypothesis. The neural recycling hypothesis proposes that a new cultural skill is developed by "invading" preexisting neural structures to support a similar cognitive function, while the assimilation-accommodation hypothesis holds that a new cognitive skill relies on direct invoca

The role of surface and structural similarities in the retrieval of realistic perceptual events.

This study investigated whether structural similarities (i.e. abstract frames, e.g. once bitten twice shy) can prevail over surface similarities (i.e. contexts, e.g. restaurant) in driving the retrieval of realistic events involving dynamic, multimodal and perceptually crowded data. After watching an initial set of video clips, participants had to indicate whether a new video clip, that shared surface similarities with an initial event and structural similarities with another one, elicited a retrieval. The results of Experiment 1A showed that retrieval was more likely to be elicited by structu

Hemispheric lateralization and top-down regulation of the prefrontal cortex on sequential memory of familiar faces.

Working memory of familiar faces involves the coordination of multiple brain regions in sensory processing, attention and memory, and relies on robust representations in long-term memory. It is not clear how prior knowledge interacts with bottom-up visual processing at different phases of working memory. In this study, we collected functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data of 40 right-handed participants during the sequential memory task and recognition task of familiar celebrity faces. We observed strong left-lateralized neural activity in the language-processing areas and right-later

Domain-specific connectivity drives the organization of object knowledge in the brain.

The goal of this chapter is to review neuropsychological and functional MRI findings that inform a theory of the causes of functional specialization for semantic categories within occipito-temporal cortex-the ventral visual processing pathway. The occipito-temporal pathway supports visual object processing and recognition. The theoretical framework that drives this review considers visual object recognition through the lens of how "downstream" systems interact with the outputs of visual recognition processes. Those downstream processes include conceptual interpretation, grasping and object use

Scene context shapes category representational geometry during processing of tools.

Tools are ubiquitous in human environments and to think about them we use concepts. Increasingly, conceptual representation is thought to be dynamic and sensitive to the goals of the observer. Indeed, observer goals can reshape representational geometry within cortical networks supporting concepts. In the present study, we investigated the novel hypothesis that task-irrelevant scene context may implicitly alter the representational geometry of regions within the tool network. Participants performed conceptual judgments on images of tools embedded in scenes that either suggested their use (i.e.

It's not all about looks: The role of object shape in parietal representations of manual tools.

The ability to build and expertly manipulate manual tools sets humans apart from other animals. Watching images of manual tools has been shown to elicit a distinct pattern of neural activity in a network of parietal areas, assumingly because tools entail a potential for action-a unique feature related to their functional use and not shared with other manipulable objects. However, a question has been raised whether this selectivity reflects a processing of low-level visual properties-such as elongated shape that is idiosyncratic to most tool-objects-rather than action-specific features.
