An unusual presentation of infantile fibrosarcoma in a male newborn.

We describe a 10-day-old male presenting with drop foot and immobility in his right leg; no abnormality in physical examination had been found upon delivery or discharge. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a pelvic mass with an extension to the great sciatic foramen. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy revealed congenital infantile fibrosarcoma. He was started on vincristine, actinomycin-D, cyclophosphamide chemotherapy. However, he died soon after the second cycle due to veno-occlusive disease of the liver. Differential diagnosis of drop foot and immobility in lower extremity must include infiltrati

Sclerosing peritonitis associated with luteinized thecoma and elevated serum CA 125 levels: case report.

CONTEXT: Thecomas are benign tumors that account for less than 1% of all ovarian neoplasms. The association of ovarian thecoma with sclerosing peritonitis is rare. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 33-year-old woman, with a two-month history of increasing abdominal volume. Ultrasound showed a complex pelvic lesion and laboratory analysis detected elevated serum CA 125 levels. The patient underwent total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and peritoneal biopsy. Histopathological analysis revealed the presence of luteinized thecoma of both ovaries associated with scl

Thoracoabdominal peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors in childhood: radiological features.

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) are extremely uncommon, malignant neoplasms affecting mostly children and young adults. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data and radiological studies of four such cases. All cases were pathologically proven. Plain films, US, and CT scans were used. The youngest child had a huge pelvic tumor and two adolescents each had a chest wall (Askin) tumor. The fourth patient had a most unusual location of the PNET in the anterior mediastinum. The CT findings are emphasized. We emphasize that the markedly abnormal CT findings are not specific fo

Abdominal complications after bone marrow transplantation in children: sonographic and CT findings.

Bone marrow transplantation is increasingly used in children to treat refractory malignant neoplasms, immunodeficiency syndromes, and hematopoietic and genetic disorders. In preparation for the transplantation, patients receive high doses of chemotherapeutic agents and total-body irradiation to destroy residual malignant cells or dysfunctional marrow and to prevent rejection of the graft. A variety of abdominal and pelvic complications may occur after transplantation because of pancytopenia, the direct toxic effects of the preparative regimen, graft-vs-host disease, or immunosuppression. This

[Feasibility study on CT guided percutaneous incisional needle biopsy for deep pelvic masses by different puncture approaches].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the feasibility of CT guided percutaneous incisional needle biopsy (PINB) for deep pelvic masses at different locations via various puncture approaches. METHODS: PINBs under CT guidance were performed in 70 patients with 72 pelvic lesions through different puncture approaches. Their pathological findings and safety were evaluated after follow-up of a period of 1-34 months. RESULTS: PINBs were performed through transpiriform-muscle in 27 cases, 16 through transgluteal approach, 5 through posterior oblique approach in prone position, 8 by anterior or lateral transabdomina

Diagnosis of hepatic actinomycosis by fine-needle aspiration.

A 48-yr-old white female with a 20-yr history of intrauterine device use presented with signs and symptoms suggestive of a disseminated neoplasm with a pelvic primary. A definitive diagnosis of disseminated actinomycosis was made on the basis of computed tomography-guided fine-needle aspiration of a liver lesion. Subsequent laparotomy revealed involvement of the endometrium and of the ovaries and uterine tubes bilaterally. This article indicates the usefulness of fine-needle aspiration in the diagnosis of actinomycosis in this case.

Breast metastasis from vaginal cancer.

Vaginal cancer is a rare malignancy accounting for 1-2% of all pelvic neoplasms. Dissemination usually occurs through local invasion and rarely metastasises to distal locations. Metastasis of vaginal cancer to the breast is extremely infrequent and unique. A 66-year-old Asian woman presented with vaginal bleeding and was found to have a vaginal mass and a left breast mass. Pathological assessment of the biopsies revealed identical squamous cell characteristics of both masses. We describe a very rare and novel case of a distally located vaginal carcinoma with metastasis to the breast Federation…

MR imaging of the pelvis: a guide to incidental musculoskeletal findings for abdominal radiologists.

Occasionally patients who undergo magnetic resonance imaging for presumed pelvic disease demonstrate unexpected musculoskeletal imaging findings in the imaged field. Such incidental findings can be challenging to the abdominal radiologist, who may not be familiar with their appearance or know the appropriate diagnostic considerations. Findings can include both normal and abnormal bone marrow, osseous abnormalities such as Paget's disease, avascular necrosis, osteomyelitis, stress and insufficiency fractures, and athletic pubalgia, benign neoplasms such as enchondroma and bone island, malignant

Aggressive angiomyxoma of the female urethra.

Aggressive angiomyxoma is a rare locally invasive mesenchymal neoplasm of unknown pathogenesis arising predominantly in pelvic and perineal tissues of adult women. Surgical excision is the classical management but is associated with the risk of recurrence, especially with incomplete excision. There is a proposed role for adjuvant hormonal therapy. We report a very rare case of urethral aggressive angiomyxoma, managed by surgical excision, in a 40-year-old woman who presented with severe hematuria with clot retention.

Preoperative localization of androgen-secreting tumors: clinical, endocrinologic, and radiologic evaluation of ten patients.

A series of 10 patients with benign androgen-secreting neoplasms is presented. Nine tumors were ovarian, and one adrenal. In an attempt to correctly diagnose the presence of tumor and to accurately localize the lesion to a specific gland, steroid hormones in peripheral, ovarian, and adrenal vein serum were analyzed by radioimmunoassay. Little correlation was made in this series with those levels of testosterone (greater than 2 ng/ml) or dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (greater than 7000 ng/ml) that have been widely used to predict the presence of such tumors. Peripheral testosterone levels were

Midurethral autologous fascial sling surgery with reconstruction of the lower abdominal wall using the tensor fascia lata muscle flap for post-hemipelvectomy stress urinary incontinence.

Hemipelvectomy is surgery for pelvic bone neoplasms. In the case of pubic bone osteosarcoma, the distal end of the rectus abdominis muscle is severed from the pubic and ischium bones, and the pelvic floor muscles are resected en bloc with the bone, which leads to stress urinary incontinence. Cancer control is prioritized over complications, and stress urinary incontinence is generally disregarded. A 25-year-old woman presented with stress urinary incontinence. She had undergone a hemipelvectomy for left pubic bone osteosarcoma, and stress urinary incontinence appeared and persisted since the s

Well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma of the uterine serosa identified at cesarean section: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal mesotheliomas encompass a variety of benign and malignant neoplasms. Well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma (WDPM) is uncommon, is thought to be of low malignant potential and is often discovered incidentally during abdominal or pelvic surgery. We describe a highly unusual case in which WDPM arising from the uterine serosa was identified at the time of cesarean delivery. CASE: A 21-year-old primigravida underwent cesarean delivery at term for arrest of the active phase of labor. A 2-cm, polypoid lesion was excised from the posterior uterine fundus; final pathology s

Pearls and Pitfalls in Diagnosing Pediatric Urinary Bladder Masses.

Urinary bladder masses are rare in children, and the associated histologic features and prognoses in this population are different from those in adults. Most children with urinary bladder masses present with lower urinary tract symptoms, which may include hematuria, dysuria, frequent urination, and urgency to urinate. However, some of these masses may be identified incidentally or involve generic symptoms such as abdominal distention. In general, pediatric bladder tumors can be divided into those that originate from the bladder epithelium, known as urothelial neoplasms, and mesenchymal bladder

GYNAECOLOGICAL ONCOLOGIC DISEASES AND PREGNANCY.

We review the current research literature on treatment behaviour for neoplasms of the female genital tract during pregnancy. Guidelines for clinical management of cervical cancer, ovarian tumours, and vulvar cancer are presented both regarding gynaecological oncologic treatment and obstetrics. Cervical cancer is the most common malignant tumour of the female genitalia during pregnancy due to the high incidence of this neoplasm in developing countries, including Bulgaria, on the one hand, and on the other, it affects women of reproductive age. Treatment algorithms depending on various factors -

Recurrent mucinous neoplasm arising in cesarean scar: A case report and review of literature.

Ovarian mucinous tumors are one of the common epithelial tumors in the ovary, but their recurrence is extremely rare. In a 37-year-old female patient who had had five operations in 7 years due to recurrent mucinous neoplasms, a mass extending to the umbilicus was recently detected during a routine examination. With this finding the patient underwent cystectomy, total abdominal hysterectomy, and left salpingo-oophorectomy. Two of the five operations were performed during cesarean delivery. In the recent surgical procedure, two cysts were removed. A 20 cm cyst in the pelvic region was diagnosed

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: Multimodality Imaging Approach with Clinical-Pathologic Correlation.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a common medical problem, with almost 1 million cases diagnosed annually. Historically, PID has been a clinical diagnosis supplemented with the findings from ultrasonography (US) or magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. However, the diagnosis of PID can be challenging because the clinical manifestations may mimic those of other pelvic and abdominal processes. Given the nonspecific clinical manifestations, computed tomography (CT) is commonly the first imaging examination performed. General CT findings of early- and late-stage PID include thickening of the uteros

Benign multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma mimicking mucinous ovarian neoplasm with pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Cystic mesothelioma, also known as benign multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma (BMPM), is a rare neoplasm and one of the five main histological types of peritoneal mesothelioma. Although it is usually considered benign histologically, it is increasingly accepted as a 'borderline malignancy' because the local recurrence rate is high. It is more common in middle-aged women and is generally asymptomatic. Considering that BMPM is often found in the pelvis, it is difficult to differentiate from other pelvic and abdominal lesions, such as cystic ovarian masses, especially mucinous cystadenoma-adenoca

Giant solitary fibrous tumor of the pelvis: A case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare spindle cells neoplasms most likely arising from mesenchymal cells. Usually they involve the pleura. Even if extra-thoracic SFTs are rare, lately they are diagnosed with increased frequency. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of giant pelvic and retroperitoneal neoplasm, a rare solitary fibrous tumor, in a 51-year-old man that was admitted for abdominal pain. DISCUSSION: On CT a SFT appears usually as a smooth, lobulated mass with occasional calcifications, but the imaging differential diagnosis with other mesenchymal tumors is very

Primary yolk sac tumor of the urachus.

INTRODUCTION: Neoplasms originating from the urachus are rare. The most common urachal malignancy is adenocarcinoma, whereas extragonadal germ cell tumors, primarily of the urachus, are an extremely rare finding. OBJECTIVE: To describe a primary yolk sac tumor (YST) of the urachus in an adult. CASE REPORT: A 44-year-old woman presented with 6 months of pelvic pain associated with a sensation of progressive mass growth. At the time of tumor resection, the tumor was found to be attached by a pedicle to the dome of the bladder, with no injury to the adjacent organs. Pathological study showed a
