[Detection of glaucomatous visual field defects using masking campimetry].

A total of 100 eyes of 50 patients with ocular hypertension and glaucoma of different etiology were examined with the Humphrey-Field-Anazlyer (program 30-2) and the noise-field campimeter according to Aulhorn and Köst [1,2]. The sensitivity of noise-field campimetry vs light-sense perimetry, i.e. the percentage of eyes with an abnormal result in light-sense perimetry that were also identified as abnormal by noise-field campimetry, was 86%. The specificity, i.e. the percentage of eyes with ocular hypertension and thus by definition a normal visual field in light-sense perimetry, that were also

Optimum level of visual contrast sensitivity for reading comprehension.

Reading comprehension scores were curvilinearly related to a visual contrast sensitivity measure of 155 elementary school children. Moderate contrast sensitivity for fine detail appeared to be optimal for reading; both low and high sensitivity were associated with lower reading comprehension.

[Latency, threshold and frequency selectivity of the crossed medial cochlear efferent pathways].

The efferent innervation of guinea pig cochleas was sectioned medially, at the level of the floor of the fourth ventricle, to study the effects of the crossed part of the medial efferent pathway on the compound action potential (CAP) masking phenomenon. Sectioning reduced CAP masking for a masker level varying with the frequency of the masker and the time elapsed between the masker onset and the probe onset. Functional properties of the crossed part of the medial efferent tracts: latency, thresholds and frequency selectivity, could be deduced from these data. This intensification of the maskin

Perception of movement and correlation in stroboscopically presented noise patterns.

The detection of spatiotemporal correlation in visual displays has been studied with stroboscopically presented random-noise patterns and with a signal-to-noise ratio paradigm in which the moving pattern was masked with spatiotemporal white noise. These methods reveal the ability of the visual system to detect correlation of spatiotemporal structures, rather than luminance contrast. The effects of stroboscopic rate, exposure duration, target size, and the extent of discrete spatial shifts were studied in both the central and the peripheral visual field. Evidence for orientation-selective and s

The effect of broadband noise on the human brainstem auditory evoked response. II. Frequency specificity.

A series of experiments evaluated the effects of broadband noise (ipsilateral) on wave V of the brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) elicited by tone bursts or clicks in the presence of high-pass masking noise. Experiment 1 used 1000- and 4000-Hz, 60-dB nHL tone bursts in the presence of broadband noise. With increasing noise level, wave V latency shift was greater for the 1000-Hz tone bursts, while amplitude decrements were similar for both tone-burst frequencies. Experiment 2 varied high-pass masker cutoff frequency and the level of subtotal masking in the presence of 50-dB nHL clicks.

Intensity coding in the auditory periphery of the cat: responses of cochlear nerve and cochlear nucleus neurons to signals in the presence of bandstop masking noise.

The dynamic range over which fine intensity discrimination is possible has been reported to be largely unaffected by limitation of the spread of neuronal activity to neighbouring frequency regions by bandstop noise masking. We have therefore examined the responses of cochlear nerve and nucleus neurons to tone and noise signals in the presence of a bandstop masking noise designed to be comparable to that employed in the psychophysical experiments. Under these conditions, the vast majority of cochlear nerve fibres were saturated by sound levels at which some 50% of our sample of cochlear nucleus

Smooth pursuit of amodally completed images.

In order to evaluate the effect of the parafoveal area of the retina on smooth pursuit, we compared the horizontal smooth pursuit of visible and amodally completed stimuli in people with central vision loss and controls. In the amodally completed stimuli, a black mask covered the bottom vertex of a moving diamond which is the feature whose movement participants had to track. Both the visible and the amodally completed stimuli moved along regular and irregular sinusoidal motion paths. Our results show that people with central vision loss are able to track a perceptually completed moving stimulu

Speech perception and memory coding in relation to reading ability.

Previous work has demonstrated that children who are poor readers have short-term memory deficits in tasks in which the stimuli lend themselves to phonetic coding. The aim of the present study was to explore whether the poor readers' memory deficit may have its origin in perception with the encoding of the stimuli. Three experiments were conducted with third grade good and poor readers. As in earlier experiments, the poor readers were found to perform less well on recall of random word strings and to be less affected by the phonetic characteristics (rhyming or not rhyming) of the items (Experi

Voice gender and the segregation of competing talkers: Perceptual learning in cochlear implant simulations.

Two experiments explored the role of differences in voice gender in the recognition of speech masked by a competing talker in cochlear implant simulations. Experiment 1 confirmed that listeners with normal hearing receive little benefit from differences in voice gender between a target and masker sentence in four- and eight-channel simulations, consistent with previous findings that cochlear implants deliver an impoverished representation of the cues for voice gender. However, gender differences led to small but significant improvements in word recognition with 16 and 32 channels. Experiment 2

Directional effects between rapid auditory processing and phonological awareness in children.

BACKGROUND: Deficient rapid auditory processing (RAP) has been associated with early language impairment and dyslexia. Using an auditory masking paradigm, children with language disabilities perform selectively worse than controls at detecting a tone in a backward masking (BM) condition (tone followed by white noise) compared to a forward masking (FM) condition (tone preceded by white noise). Tallal's (1980) auditory processing hypothesis posits that abnormal RAP leads to reduced (or impaired) phonological awareness (PA), resulting in reading and language difficulties. Alternative theories sug

Changes in flavor profile of sauce-flavor baijiu: Perceptual interactions between 1-propanol and aroma compounds.

1-Propanol is an important aroma compound in sauce-flavor Baijiu. However, the mechanism by which it affects the aroma of sauce-flavor Baijiu has not been fully investigated. In this study, an instrumental and perceptual analysis was employed to assess the impact of 1-propanol on the flavor and volatile compounds in sauce-flavor Baijiu. The combination of sensory evaluation and electronic tongue analysis revealed that 1-propanol diminished the floral and fruity flavor and increased the bitterness and astringency. According to SHS/GC-MS analysis, 1-propanol mainly inhibited the volatility of et

Face Mask Effects on Acoustic Features and Intelligibility of Mandarin Chinese Speech.

PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to investigate how face masks influenced the acoustic features of Chinese running speech in both temporal and spectral domains and how the intelligibility of the speech with face masks was affected in quiet and multitalker babbles. The relationship between the acoustic features and speech intelligibility was also examined. METHOD: In Experiment 1, Mandarin Chinese sentences were recorded by 24 native Mandarin Chinese speakers wearing a surgical mask, a KN95 mask, or not wearing a mask and temporal modulation (TM) depth; speaking rate, spectral tilt, and ave

Neural Compensation Mechanisms of Siblings of Schizophrenia Patients as Revealed by High-Density EEG.

Visual backward masking (VBM) deficits are candidate endophenotypes of schizophrenia indexing genetic liability of the disorder. In VBM, a target is followed by a mask that deteriorates target perception. Schizophrenia patients and, to a lesser extent, their unaffected relatives show strong and reproducible VBM deficits. In patients, VBM deficits are associated with strongly decreased amplitudes in the evoked-related potentials (ERPs). Here, to unveil the neural mechanisms of VBM in schizophrenia, circumventing illness-specific confounds, we investigated the electroencephalogram correlates of

Vision science and schizophrenia research: toward a re-view of the disorder. Editors' introduction to special section.

This theme section on vision science and schizophrenia research demonstrates that our understanding of the disorder could be significantly accelerated by a greater adoption of the methods of vision science. In this introduction, we briefly describe what vision science is, how it has advanced our understanding of schizophrenia, and what challenges and opportunities lay ahead regarding schizophrenia research. We then summarize the articles that follow. These include reviews of abnormal form perception (perceptual organization and backward masking) and motion processing, and an article on reduced

Feature-based attentional tuning during biological motion detection measured with SSVEP.

Performance in detection tasks can be improved by directing attention to task-relevant features. In this study, we evaluate the direction tuning of selective attention to motion features when observers detect point-light biological motion in noise. Feature-based attention strategy is assessed by capitalizing on the sensitivity of unattended steady-state visual-evoked potential (SSVEP) to the spreading of feature-based attention to unattended regions of space. Participants monitored for the presence of a point-light walker embedded in uniform dynamic noise in the center of the screen. We analyz

Sound enrichment helps persons suffering from low frequency phantom sounds.

Low frequency noise (LFN) of unknown origin can be disturbing, especially at night, and affect sleep and relaxation. If reduction of the LFN is impossible, adding sound can mask the troubling noise or detract attention from it to reduce distress. To assess the effectiveness of this, a survey was set up consisting of three questionnaires: the first when a person requested a masking sound and follow-ups after 1 and 3 months. Distress reduction was based on self-assessment and on the tinnitus questionnaire (TQ). Out of 124 respondents, 69% reported that the masking sound contributed to a reductio

Detection of object displacement during a saccade is prioritized by the oculomotor system.

The human eye-movement system is equipped with a sophisticated updating mechanism that can adjust for large retinal displacements produced by saccadic eye movements. The nature of this updating mechanism is still highly debated. Previous studies have demonstrated that updating can occur very rapidly and is initiated before the start of a saccade. In the present study, we used saccade curvature to demonstrate that the oculomotor system is tuned for detecting object displacements during saccades. Participants made a sequence of saccades while ignoring an irrelevant distractor. Curvature of the s

Sensory-Biased and Multiple-Demand Processing in Human Lateral Frontal Cortex.

The functionality of much of human lateral frontal cortex (LFC) has been characterized as "multiple demand" (MD) as these regions appear to support a broad range of cognitive tasks. In contrast to this domain-general account, recent evidence indicates that portions of LFC are consistently selective for sensory modality. Michalka et al. (2015) reported two bilateral regions that are biased for visual attention, superior precentral sulcus (sPCS) and inferior precentral sulcus (iPCS), interleaved with two bilateral regions that are biased for auditory attention, transverse gyrus intersecting prec

Masking exposure to phobic stimuli reduces fear without inducing electrodermal activity.

A series of experiments has shown that limiting awareness of exposure to feared stimuli through visual masking-or very brief exposure (VBE)-reduces avoidance of a live tarantula by spider-phobic participants. We investigated this process of fear reduction by directly relating the effects of VBE on electrodermal activity to its ensuing effects on phobic behavior. Sixty spider-phobic participants, identified by approaching a live tarantula and a questionnaire, were administered either VBE to masked spiders or control exposure to masked flowers. Skin conductance levels (SCLs) were continuously re

Aging Effects on Behavioural Estimates of Suppression with Short Suppressors.

Auditory two-tone suppression is a nearly instantaneous reduction in the response of the basilar membrane to a tone or noise when a second tone or noise is presented simultaneously. Previous behavioural studies provide conflicting evidence on whether suppression changes with increasing age, and aging effects may depend on whether a suppressor above (high-side) or below (low-side) the signal frequency is used. Most previous studies have measured suppression using stimuli long enough to elicit the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR), a sound-elicited reflex that reduces cochlear amplification or
