The postpartum period is characterised by significant physiological and anatomical changes that may mimic pathology on imaging. Exposure to puerperal imaging varies between healthcare systems and may depend on whether postnatal ultrasound is performed primarily by radiologists or obstetricians/gynaecologists. Differentiating normal postpartum appearances from true complications can therefore be challenging, particularly when clinical presentations are non-specific. This review summarises normal and abnormal postpartum imaging findings and describes a structured checklist to systematically eval

BACKGROUND: Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is a rare and serious complication of hyperthyroidism.
CASE PRESENTATION: A man in his thirties of Asian descent, with non-compliant Graves' disease, presented with extremity paresis. Emergency blood tests revealed severe hypokalaemia, leading to a diagnosis of thyrotoxic periodic paralysis. The combination of uncontrolled hyperthyroidism, Asian ethnicity, paralysis, and severe hypokalaemia without other causes defined the diagnosis. Acute treatment involves non-selective beta-blockers, addressing hyperthyroidism, and potassium supplements.

Periodic fever syndromes are autoinflammatory diseases. The majority present in infancy or childhood and are characterised by recurrent episodes of fever and systemic inflammation that occur in the absence of autoantibody production or identifiable infection. The best recognised disorders include CAPS, FMF, TRAPS and MKD. Understanding the molecular pathogenesis of these disorders provides unique insights into the regulation of innate immunity. Diagnosis relies on clinical acumen and is supported by genetic testing. With the exception of FMF, which is prevalent in populations originating from

Hypokalaemic periodic paralysis is a rare skeletal muscle channelopathy causing flaccid paralysis, which predominantly presents in adolescents and young adults. I report a case of a 33-year-old Caucasian man who presented with sudden onset paralysis, following previous similar presentations without investigation. Blood tests revealed undetectable serum potassium levels in the context of paralysis. Other causes of hypokalaemia were excluded, and the patient was treated with planned lifelong prophylactic potassium replacement for a diagnosis of primary hypokalaemic periodic paralysis. This case

Menstrual suppression--the use of hormones to delay or eliminate menses--is often used in adolescents to manage conditions associated with the menstrual cycle and to accommodate lifestyle preferences. Reducing the frequency of menstrual bleeding does not cause any known physiologic harm and has potential short-term and long-term advantages. Different methods used for menstrual suppression, however, have associated risks and side effects that need to be weighed against the benefits of controlling menses. This article reviews the advantages and disadvantages of menstrual suppression and the diff

The perioperative period is characterized by profound changes in the body's homoeostatic processes. This review seeks to address whether epigenetic mechanisms may influence an individual's reaction to surgery and anaesthesia. Evidence from animal and human studies suggests that epigenetic mechanisms can explain many facets of susceptibility to acute and chronic pain, making them potential therapeutic targets. Modern pain management is still based upon opiates, and both the developmental expression of opioid receptors and opioid-induced hyperalgesia have been linked to epigenetic mechanisms. In

This article aims at highlighting the importance of suspecting thyrotoxicosis in cases of recurrent periodic flaccid paralysis; especially in Asian men to facilitate early diagnosis of the former condition. A case report of a 28 year old male patient with recurrent periodic flaccid paralysis has been presented. Hypokalemia secondary to thyrotoxicosis was diagnosed as the cause of the paralysis. The patient was given oral potassium intervention over 24 hours. The patient showed complete recovery after the medical intervention and was discharged after 24 hours with no residual paralysis. Thyroto

This review focuses on so-called "periodic syndromes of childhood that are precursors to migraine," as included in the second edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders. Presentation is characterized by an episodic pattern and intervals of complete health. Benign paroxysmal torticollis is characterized by recurrent episodes of head tilt, secondary to cervical dystonia, with onset between ages 2-8 months. Benign paroxysmal vertigo presents as sudden attacks of vertigo lasting seconds to minutes, accompanied by an inability to stand without support, between ages 2-4 years.

BACKGROUND: Primary periodic paralyses are rare inherited muscle diseases characterised by episodes of flaccid weakness affecting one or more limbs, lasting several hours to several days, caused by mutations in skeletal muscle channel genes.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to systematically review treatment of periodic paralyses.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Neuromuscular Disease Group Trials Register, MEDLINE (from January 1966 to July 2007), and EMBASE (from January 1980 to July 2007) and any other available international medical library sources from the Universit

OBJECTIVE: To review the current knowledge about primary periodic paralyses (PPs).
RESULTS: Periodic paralyses are a heterogeneous group of disorders, clinically characterized by episodes of flaccid muscle weakness, occurring at irregular intervals. PPs are divided into primary (hereditary) and secondary (acquired) forms of which the secondary PPs are much more common than the primary PPs. Primary PPs are due to mutations in genes encoding for subunits of channel proteins of the skeletal muscle membrane, such as the muscular sodium, potassium or calcium channels, or the SCL4A1 protein. Primar

Periodic fever syndromes comprise a group of disorders characterized by attacks of seemingly unprovoked inflammation. The genetic causes of five hereditary autoinflammatory syndromes have been identified in the last few years: familial Mediterranean fever, the cryopyrinopathies [Muckle-Wells, chronic infantile neurological, cutaneous, articular syndrome (CINCA) and familial autoinflammatory syndromes], TNF-receptor associated periodic syndrome, cyclic neutropenia syndrome and periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and cervical adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome. The study of periodic fever s

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP), a hyperthyroidism-related hypokalemia and muscle-weakening condition resulting from a sudden shift of potassium into cells, has been seen increasingly in Western countries. Failure to recognize TPP may lead to improper management. Many patients with TPP have no obvious symptoms related to hyperthyroidism. Therefore, several important clues may help in diagnosing and managing TPP: presentation in an adult male with no family history of periodic paralysis; presence of systolic hypertension, tachycardia, high QRS voltage, first-degree atrioventricular block on

BACKGROUND: Kuru is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy that was identified in Papua New Guinea in the late 1950s. Several thousand cases of the disease occurred during a period of several decades. Epidemiologic investigations implicated ritual endocannibalistic funeral feasts as the likely route through which the infectious agent was spread.
METHODS: We estimated the incubation period distribution of kuru using a back-calculation model and explored the relation among sex, age at infection, and incubation period. Key assumptions in the model were that the number of new kuru infections i
