An investigation of self-compassion and nonattachment to self in people with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: There have been longstanding theories and research evidence into the important role of the person's vulnerability at the level of self-concept in bipolar disorder (BD). The current study investigated two emerging self-related constructs, self-compassion and nonattachment to self in BD. Specifically, we examined the levels of the two constructs in people with BD compared with those from the general population, and the associations between the constructs and bipolar symptomologies within the BD group. METHODS: The BD group consisted of 302 individuals with a diagnosis of BD particip

Do intoxicated witnesses produce poor facial composite images?

RATIONALE: The effect of alcohol intoxication on witness memory and performance has been the subject of research for some time, however, whether intoxication affects facial composite construction has not been investigated. OBJECTIVES: Intoxication was predicted to adversely affect facial composite construction. METHODS: Thirty-two participants were allocated to one of four beverage conditions consisting of factorial combinations of alcohol or placebo at face encoding, and later construction. Participants viewed a video of a target person and constructed a composite of this target the followi

Beyond Representation: Metaphor as a Mechanism for Interpersonal Reconstruction of Embodied Experience.

Human experience is fundamentally embodied, involving the continuous interaction of external perception, bodily awareness, physiological states, and affective responses. However, because subjective experiences are multidimensional and personally situated, communicating their qualitative character presents a fundamental challenge. Existing theories of metaphor have primarily emphasized its role in conceptual representation, reasoning, and meaning construction, whereas less attention has been given to how metaphor enables individuals to make embodied experiences accessible to others. This paper

Psychometric properties of the Fear of Cancer Recurrence Inventory: an item response theory approach.

OBJECTIVE: Classical psychometric methods have been used to demonstrate the validity and reliability of the 42-item Fear of Cancer Recurrence Inventory (FCRI). Our aim was to expand on this evidence with information on the discriminative value of the individual items when administered to people with a personal history of melanoma, using an item response theory (IRT) approach. METHODS: We used a two-parameter IRT model to examine all items of the FCRI, primarily regarding whether people with a personal history of melanoma use the response scale as expected (as indicated by item characteristic

The important issue of awareness of disaster response to the COVID-19.

This study aimed to analyze the community's disaster response awareness during the Covid-19 pandemic during the implementation of The Large-Scale Social Restrictions (LSSR) in Gresik. Self-awareness was observed using Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luck man's Social Construction Theory through a dialectical process of internalization, objectification, and externalization. The results showed that there had been no good awareness in efforts to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in Gresik. Socially, the community had not taken the dangers of Covid-19 seriously. There was also an inconsistency between kno

Modes: Cohesive personality states and their interrelationships as organizing concepts in psychopathology.

We propose a transdiagnostic approach that centers on modes, state-like manifestations of personality that function as cohesive organizational units. Modes are characterized by specific profiles of affects, behaviors, cognitions, and desires that tend to be coactivated. Each mode is typically experienced as having its own distinct experiential and agentic qualities. A mode-based approach to psychopathology builds on recent analytic and methodological developments which demonstrate the value of modeling personality states dynamically, as well as on longstanding theoretical and empirical traditi

The role of fearless dominance in psychopathy: confusions, controversies, and clarifications.

Based on their 2011 meta-analysis of the correlates of the Psychopathic Personality Inventory (PPI), Miller and Lynam (An examination of the Psychopathic Personality Inventory's nomological network: A meta-analytic review, Personality Disorders: Theory, Research, and Treatment, 3, 305-326) conclude that its Fearless Dominance (PPI-FD) higher-order dimension exhibits weak construct validity, leading them to question the relevance of boldness to the conceptualization and assessment of psychopathy. We examine their assertions in light of the clinical, conceptual, and empirical literatures on psyc

When self-report diverges from performance: the usage of BIS-11 along with neuropsychological tests.

Impulsivity has been fractionated into multiple independent, but correlated, components. Personality and neuropsychological studies have consistently shown its multidimensional nature. Each theoretical approach uses different techniques such as self-report questionnaires and neuropsychological tests to assess impulsivity, respectively. Our main objective was to investigate if there is evidence of convergent validity for impulsivity as assessed by both types of measures. We administered the Barratt Impulsivity Scale 11 and two neuropsychological tests (Iowa Gambling Task and Continuous Performa

Looking for trouble: revenge-planning and preattentive vigilance for angry facial expressions.

Revenge-planning refers to individual differences in the tendency to actively seek out hostile confrontations with others. Building on past theory, we hypothesized that revenge-planning would be related to preattentive vigilance for angry facial expressions. By being vigilant for such expressions, individuals could more readily notice and prepare to confront social challenges. We conducted 2 studies to test this prediction. Across studies, results indicated that participants high in revenge-planning had significantly longer color-naming latencies for masked angry expressions presented in a sub

Development and evaluation of measures to assess self-determination in peripartum contraceptive decision-making.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to adapt and validate person-centered measures to evaluate various contributors to self-determination in perinatal contraceptive decision-making. STUDY DESIGN: We developed and administered four scales adapted from existing measures in the context of Self-Determination Theory: the Treatment Self-Regulation Questionnaire (TSRQ), Perceived Competence Scale, modified Health Care Climate Questionnaire, and Important Other Climate Questionnaire. The TSRQ consists of three subscales: autonomous motivation, controlled motivation, and amotivation. We recruited a nonprobability co

The personality and cognitive traits associated with adolescents' sensitivity to social norms.

Little is known about the personality and cognitive traits that shape adolescents' sensitivity to social norms. Further, few studies have harnessed novel empirical tools to elicit sensitivity to social norms among adolescent populations. This paper examines the association between sensitivity to norms and various personality and cognitive traits using an incentivised rule-following task grounded in Game Theory. Cross-sectional data were obtained from 1274 adolescents. Self-administered questionnaires were used to measure personality traits as well as other psychosocial characteristics. Incenti

Beliefs about the nature of knowledge shape responses to the pandemic: Epistemic beliefs, the Dark Factor of Personality, and COVID-19-related conspiracy ideation and behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Global challenges such as climate change or the COVID-19 pandemic have drawn public attention to conspiracy theories and citizens' non-compliance to science-based behavioral guidelines. We focus on individuals' worldviews about how one can and should construct reality (epistemic beliefs) to explain the endorsement of conspiracy theories and behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic and propose the Dark Factor of Personality (D) as an antecedent of post-truth epistemic beliefs. METHOD AND RESULTS: This model is tested in four pre-registered studies. In Study 1 (N = 321), we found first

Neural Integration in Body Perception.

The perception of other people is instrumental in guiding social interactions. For example, the appearance of the human body cues a wide range of inferences regarding sex, age, health, and personality, as well as emotional state and intentions, which influence social behavior. To date, most neuroscience research on body perception has aimed to characterize the functional contribution of segregated patches of cortex in the ventral visual stream. In light of the growing prominence of network architectures in neuroscience, the current article reviews neuroimaging studies that measure functional i

Strengths and weaknesses of the psychology of criminal conduct: Implications for the conceptualisation, assessment and treatment of antisocial personality pattern.

The Psychology of Criminal Conduct and its associated components (e.g. the Risk Need Responsivity model, the Central Eight risk factors) has been hugely influential in the criminal justice sector. However, like any theory it has relative strengths and weakness, one weakness being that assumptions have been made about the causal nature and conceptual coherence of its foundational constructs, dynamic risk factors. The numerous issues with the conceptualisation of dynamic risk factors have implications for the widespread practice of using them as explanations of offending and to inform interventi

Becoming a mother: Supported decision-making in context.

Little is known about how women with intellectual disabilities make decisions in relation to pregnancy. Social support is important for mothers with intellectual disabilities in many areas. This study explored how the support network influenced the decision-making of women with intellectual disabilities in relation to pregnancy. The study extended previous research to include the multiple perspectives of mothers, personal and professional support network. A model of decision-making was constructed, with implications of how services approach working with mothers with intellectual disabilities.

Differential relationships between personal and community stressors and children's neurocognitive functioning.

Early adversity can alter development of neurocognition, including executive cognitive and emotional regulatory functions. This is the first study to explore differential relationships between personal (physical and emotional abuse and neglect, school and parental stressors) and community (neighborhood problems and witnessing neighborhood violence) stressors and neurocognition. Predominantly Latino children (n = 553) aged 10 to 12 years completed tasks measuring intelligence, impulsivity, problem solving, cognitive flexibility, decision making, and emotion attributions. Adjusting for age and p

Processing of affective speech prosody is impaired in Asperger syndrome.

Many people with the diagnosis of Asperger syndrome (AS) show poorly developed skills in understanding emotional messages. The present study addressed discrimination of speech prosody in children with AS at neurophysiological level. Detection of affective prosody was investigated in one-word utterances as indexed by the N1 and the mismatch negativity (MMN) of auditory event-related potentials (ERPs). Data from fourteen boys with AS were compared with those for thirteen typically developed boys. These results suggest atypical neural responses to affective prosody in children with AS and their f

Intervention Design for Individual Behavior Change in Stroke Prevention Trials.

Stroke prevention requires that patients follow recommended health behaviors. However, few stroke behavioral interventions have been shown to produce clinically significant behavior change in clinical trials, likely thwarted in the design process by limited application of behavioral theoretical models and insight into mechanistic underpinnings during intervention testing. The National Institutes of Health Stage Model for Behavioral Intervention Development provides a systematic, nonlinear, iterative framework for advancing behavioral interventions from theory to practice. Here, we provide an o

The construction and psychometric evaluation of the self-structure scale: a bidimensional model of self-structure.

BACKGROUND: Although psychoanalytic and personality theories have consistently highlighted the central role of self-structure, existing psychometric tools predominantly measure isolated personality traits or narcissistic subtypes, with scarce instruments dedicated to evaluating the organizational mechanisms governing self-related functioning. This study puts forward a bidimensional theoretical framework of self-structure and constructs the Scale of Self-Structure (SOSS), aiming to empirically verify the measurable manifestation of the proposed theoretical dimensions. METHODS: Two sequential e
