Interpersonal style and personality deviation.

Forensic psychiatric patients were assigned to empirically derived categories of personality deviation, and described their interpersonal reactions in situations of threat and affiliation. Differences between groups were maintained across situations, and support the utility of conceptualizing personality disorders in terms of inflexible interpersonal styles.

Personality traits of hemophilic boys.

Personality traits of 50 hemophilic boys were assessed with the Early School (ESPQ), Children's (CPQ), and High School (HSPQ) Personality Questionnaires. Compared to the norms for healthy, male age-mates, hemophiliacs were significantly more intelligent, stable, and secure. They did not deviate from the norm on the remaining eight traits assessed. The findings of higher intelligence may indicate that hemophilic boys are more motivated to excel intellectually because this avenue is more appropriate to them due to the risk of pain and disability from physical endeavors. Boys with severe hemophil…

Symptoms of schizotypal personality disorder.

The authors examined the symptoms of 35 patients with schizotypal personality disorder. In contrast to the suggestion, based on studies of nonclinical, familial samples, that patients with schizotypal disorder are best characterized by the negative symptoms of social isolation and impaired functioning, they found that the positive symptoms of odd communication, ideas of reference, magical thinking, and illusions were equally valid discriminators of their clinically based group of patients. The findings argue against the idea that schizotypal personality disorder be redefined in the revision of…

Personality diagnosis and illness diagnosis.

This case presented with features of affective disorder with psychosis and also of borderline, avoidant and schizotypal personality disorders. During the course of subsequent treatment there was a marked reduction not only in psychotic and depressive features, but also in criteria for personality disorder, especially borderline. Relevant literature is reviewed and the importance of treatable illness as a possible cause of apparent personality disorder is discussed.

Drugs and personality: extraversion-introversion.

Eysenck theorizes that stimulants induce introversion and that depressants induce extraversion; common sense suggests opposite expectations. Scores on the extraversion scale of the Eysenck Personality Inventory yielded statistically significant differences among carefully matched series of heavy, chronic users of cocaine, amphetamine, opiates, barbiturate/sedative-hypnotics, and a comparable series of nonusers. Cocaine users and opiates users were found to be more introverted; amphetamine users, barbiturates users, and nonusers were more extraverted . These findings did not fully support eithe…

Personality pathology underlying chronic prostatitis.

Personality testing was performed on 56 patients with clinical symptoms of chronic prostatitis. The psychological methods used were RO, TAT, FAM and Beck's Depression Inventory. Q factor analysis of the patients was performed and yielded four factors representing four different personality pathologies, i.e. psychosomatic structure, alexithymic personality, borderline personality and narcissistic personality. The duration of the somatic symptoms correlated positively with the severity of the psychic symptoms. The etiology of the different pathologies expressed by the patients with chronic prost…

The oppositional personality in childhood.

The charts of thirty children having been diagnosed at Washington University Child Guidance Clinic as having oppositional personalities are reviewed and their commonalities are noted. The literature on this syndrome is reviewed and the dynamics discussed. Delineation of this syndrome from other syndromes is considered. The issue of control for autonomy seems to be central in these children who resist authority, but have superego development.

Cerebral lateralization and personality style.

Hysterical and obsessive-compulsive style subjects, as determined by a modified Rorschach test and the Wechslar Adult Intelligence Scale Comprehension subtest, were questioned in a face-to-face format where lateral eye movements were surreptitiously observed. Only right-handed subjects were used. It has been argued that lateral eye movements index immediate hemispheric activation after questions--the first such eye movement being a direction opposite to the putatively activated hemisphere. There was significantly more left-looking among the hysterical subjects than among the obsessive-compulsi

Asthenic personality, myth or reality.

One hundred and seventy five subjects admitted to hospital for neurotic conditions were assessed as to their personality types. Forty seven percent were judged as having personality traits consistent with the diagnosis of asthenic personality disorder. Thirteen of the 138 symptom, life history and psychological test items examined were found to be associated with the asthenic traits. Condensation of these thirteen items by factor analysis showed that two features--anxiety proneness and inability to cope with stress--together defined the disorder.

Obsessional personality disorder and remembering.

Patients suffering from obsessional personality disorder (anankasts) have been described as possessing 'superior memories', because of the detailed precision of their accounts. At the same time, such classical phenomena as doubt, checking and rumination imply faulty recall. This paradox is discussed, and some predictions drawn from a hypothesis regarding the cognitive charactteristics of obsessional disorder. Findings are presented which indicate that, by comparison with matched psychiatric controls, anankasts do not excel in the long-term recall of factual information or meaningful anecdotal …

The female hysterical personality disorder.

It is not uncommon in family practice for the family physician to encounter the female patient with a hysterical personality disorder. A case presentation and interview are provided to help the family physician recognize the problem. A formulation of this case stresses psychosexual development, which will provide the reader with insight that can be generalized to other patients. Major emphasis is given to practical guidelines for the clinician for management of this frequently difficult problem in a medical setting.

Psychopathic personality: a conceptual problem.

The concept of psychopathic personality is currently being called into question. Grendon prison has been established for the treatment of psychopaths. A recent study of Grendon prisoners enabled an examination of some characteristics commonly attributed to psychopaths to be carried out. It proved difficult to obtain good agreement in rating such phenomena as "conscientiousness", "sexual deviation", "impulsiveness". Of ten reliable variables including "personal relationships", "lying", "alcohol problem", only five bore a significant relationship one to another. It was concluded that whilst the …
