Risk factors associated with Cryptosporidium species and genotypes in Tennessee, 2018-2023.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidiosis is a leading cause of zoonotic illness. We aimed to describe cryptosporidiosis illnesses in Tennessee by species and molecular subtypes, and explore epidemiological risk factors. METHODS: Cryptosporidium is a reportable condition in Tennessee. Cases are investigated and molecular subtyping is performed. Collected data includes patient demographics, risk factors, laboratory results, and Cryptosporidium species and subtype. We described Tennessee residents with cryptosporidiosis during 2018-2023. To explore risk factors, we used binomial probabilities to compare ex

Drugs prescribed for patients hospitalized in a geriatric oncology unit: Potentially inappropriate medications and impact of a clinical pharmacist.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) use upon admission and at discharge in a geriatric oncology unit after involving a clinical pharmacist. Although the few studies conducted in geriatric oncology units used the 2003 Beers criteria, this study used START and STOPP criteria, a more appropriate tool for European formularies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prospective study in older (≥70years) patients consecutively admitted to a geriatric oncology unit in a cancer center from July 2011 to April 2012. Clinical pharmacist conducted

Analysis of the interaction between personality dysfunction and traits in the statistical prediction of physical aggression: Results from outpatient and community samples.

The Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD), included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.) and the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases (11th ed.; ICD-11) are, respectively, hybrid categorical-dimensional and dimensional frameworks for personality disorders (PDs). Both models emphasize personality dysfunction and personality traits. Previous studies investigating the links between the AMPD and ICD-11, and self-reported physical aggression have mostly focused on traits and did not take into account the potential intera

Human giardiasis in Serbia: asymptomatic vs symptomatic infection.

Despite the public health importance of giardiasis in all of Europe, reliable data on the incidence and prevalence in Western Balkan Countries (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro and FYR Macedonia) are scarce, and the relative contribution of waterborne and food-borne, or person-to-person and/or animal-to-person, transmission of human giardiasis is not yet clear. To provide baseline data for the estimation of the public health risk caused by Giardia, we here review the information available on the epidemiological characteristics of asymptomatic and symptomatic human infection

Review of pharmacologic treatment in cluster A personality disorders.

INTRODUCTION: A personality disorder is a pervasive and enduring pattern of behaviors that impacts an individual's social, occupational, and overall functioning. Specifically, the cluster A personality disorders include paranoid personality disorder, schizoid personality disorder, and schizotypal personality disorder. Patients with cluster A personality disorders tend to be isolative and avoid relationships. The quality of life may also be reduced in these individuals, which provokes the question of how to treat patients with these personality disorders. The purpose of this review is to evalua

Barriers and facilitators to self-management in people with back-related leg pain: a qualitative secondary analysis.

BACKGROUND: Back related leg pain (BRLP) is a problematic subset of low back pain, leading to greater pain, loss of function and health related care costs. While evidence suggests self-management is effective, patient implementation can be sub-optimal. The purpose of this study is to identify barriers and facilitators to self-management for persons experiencing BRLP within the context of a controlled clinical trial and to map these to theory-informed intervention elements that can be addressed by front-line healthcare providers, informing the design and implementation of future theory-driven s

Factors associated with the identification and well-being of hidden and confirmed carers: a dyad analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Growing numbers of older people living with disability or long-term conditions are being cared for by family members and friends on an informal, unpaid basis. "Hidden carers," who provide care to another person but either do not recognize their role or consciously reject it, are overlooked by policymakers and services that rely on self-identification. METHODS: We compare reports of informal care provision and receipt between dyads of household members in Understanding Society to identify hidden (N = 5,615) vs. confirmed (N = 3,129) informal carers and explore their characteristics
