Assessment of recruit motivation and strength study: preaccession physical fitness assessment predicts early attrition.

BACKGROUND: The Assessment of Recruit Motivation and Strength (ARMS) study was designed to pilot-test the use of a physical fitness screening tool for Army applicants before basic training. METHODS: The ARMS test consists of two components, namely, a 5-minute step test and push-ups. Attrition among 7,612 recruits who underwent preaccession ARMS testing and began service between May 2004 and December 2005 was studied. RESULTS: ARMS test performance was found to be significantly related to risk of attrition within 180 days; the hazard ratios for failing relative to passing the ARMS test were 2

Unmasking the Environmental Costs of In-Person General Surgery Residency Interviews.

OBJECTIVE: As COVID-19 restrictions are eased, there has been a lively debate on whether residency recruitment interviews should be held virtually or in-person. However, environmental impact has rarely been a focus of this debate and only by inference from limited survey data. In this study, we aimed to estimate the carbon emissions generated from air-travel versus in-person interviews in the general surgery residency recruitment. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a cross-sectional study using interview data from the 2022-2023 surgical residency recruitment season from the Thalamus

Update on the Selection Criteria of Plastic Surgery Residents: A Survey of Program Directors and Associate Program Directors.

BACKGROUND: Plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) is recognized as a highly competitive specialty. Since the first assessment of resident selection criteria in 2007, PRS residency programs have adopted holistic review processes and adapted to changes such as a decline in medical schools participating in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society as well as the recent transition to pass/fail grading for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) step 1 examination (Schultz et al. What about the men? Gender parity in occupational therapy: Qu'en est-il des hommes? La parité hommes-femmes en ergothérapie.

BACKGROUND: Gender parity is frequently raised as an equity issue in occupational therapy, with strategies proposed to recruit more men. PURPOSE: This article explores whether this is a legitimate equity concern. KEY ISSUES: Most employment is gender segregated; when gender balances change, the field either re-genders feminine or creates gender-segregated internal divisions. Men avoid feminized jobs because they pay less and hold less social status. They are a "step down" for men. In such jobs, men are disproportionately pushed into management positions, with better pay, more prestige, and l

Marijuana Use and Organ Transplantation: a Review and Implications for Clinical Practice.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Physicians of all disciplines must rapidly adjust their clinical practices following the expansion of marijuana legalization across the country. Organ transplantation teams are uniquely struggling in this gray zone with eight states having passed laws explicitly banning the denial of transplant listing based on a patient's use of medical marijuana. In this review, we examine the clinical evidence of marijuana use in transplant patients to enable psychiatric providers to meaningfully contribute to the relevant medical and psychiatric aspects of this issue in a unique patient

Exploring employer job requirements: An analysis of pharmacy job announcements.

OBJECTIVES: Postgraduate training, dual degrees, and board certifications are credentials viewed by academic pharmacy communities and professional organizations as positive assets for those seeking pharmacist jobs; however, a key question merits further investigation: do these views match employer expectations? The primary objective of this study was to identify the most common qualifications employers require as stated in job advertisements. METHODS: Pharmacist job postings from the aggregate jobs website Indeed.com were evaluated for the 20 largest metropolitan areas in the United States. S

How to find non-dependent opiate users: a comparison of sampling methods in a field study of opium and heroin users.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The first aim is to better understand the potentials and limitations of different sampling methods for reaching a specific, rarely studied population of drug users and for persuading them to take part in a multidisciplinary study. The second is to determine the extent to which these different methods reach similar or dissimilar segments of the non-dependent opiate-using population. METHOD: Using ethnographic fieldwork (EFW) and targeted canvassing (TARC; small newspaper advertisements and website announcements), supplemented by snowball referrals, we recruited and interviewed

Recruitment of rural health care providers: a regional recruiter strategy.

CONTEXT: Access to care in rural areas is a major problem. Despite more than 20% of the US population residing in these areas, only 9% of physicians practice there. Extensive research has documented multiple issues that affect where physicians decide to locate and maintain practices. Creative strategies have been used to influence these recruitment and retention decisions. An emerging strategy, borne out of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Southern Rural Access Program (SRAP), effectively uses a targeted regional approach to assist rural communities and health care facilities in assessing

Cost-effectiveness analysis of the U.S. Army Assessment of Recruit Motivation and Strength (ARMS) program.

The Assessment of Recruit Motivation and Strength (ARMS) Study was conducted at six Military Entrance Processing Sites during 2005-2006. The objectives were to compare morbidity and attrition of Army accessions who exceeded body fat (EBF) accession standards compared to weight for height or body fat qualified (WQ) and to compare among the WQ subset, those who were physically fit as measured by a 5-minute step test compared to unfit. We performed a cost-effectiveness analysis to address both objectives. Analysis was performed by gender with the primary outcomes of musculoskeletal injury and att

Community-directed health (CDH) workers enhance the performance and sustainability of CDH programmes: experience from ivermectin distribution in Uganda.

The performance and 'drop-out' rates of ivermectin (Mectizan) distributors in the Ugandan programme for community-directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTI) were investigated and related to the manner in which the distributors were recruited. Distributors, from randomly selected communities endemic for onchocerciasis in seven of the 10 affected districts, were interviewed. Questionnaires were initially completed for 296 communities (in which ivermectin had been distributed in 1998 but not in 1999) and then extended to another 310 communities (in which ivermectin had been distributed in both stu

Applicant Selection and Ranking in Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowships: A National Survey of Program Leadership.

BACKGROUND: Breast surgical oncology was the most competitive surgical fellowship match in 2025, with a record low of 61% of applicants successfully matched. Previous studies evaluated the attitudes of program directors on the selection and ranking criteria of candidates. This study evaluates the perspectives of both program directors and associate program directors on the selection and ranking process because of the increasing competitiveness of the field. METHODS: An anonymous, web-based survey was sent to all breast surgical oncology fellowship program leadership. The survey consisted of 2

Who's at the Bottom of the Hiring List? Exploring the Compounding Effects of Applicant Race and Offense History on Employability.

Justice-involved persons, especially people of color and those convicted of a sexual offense, experience bias and other barriers when seeking employment. However, there is no research on the synergistic effects of race and sexual offense history on employment-related outcomes. This study examined whether a hypothetical job applicant's race (Black vs. White) and/or sexual offense history (sexual, non-sexual, or no history) impacted hiring decisions and employment-related outcomes. Results revealed no significant main effects of applicant race and no interaction between applicant race and offens

The influence of friends' person-organization fit during recruitment.

Although recruitment and perceptions of fit are inherently social-as they reflect the interactions between applicants and recruiting firms-applicants' social networks during recruitment can exert both positive and potentially negative consequences for subsequent applicant perceptions and behaviors. In this study, we examine the role of applicants' friends' perceptions of fit with the same recruiting organizations. Integrating ideas from social information processing theory and the person-organization (P-O) fit literature, we argue that friends' P-O fit perceptions drive social learning and soc

The role of the interview in residency selection: A mixed-methods study.

CONTEXT: Residency programmes invest considerable time and resources in candidate interviews as a result of their perceived ability to reveal important social traits. However, studies examining the ability of interviews to predict resident performance have shown mixed findings, and the role of the interview in candidate evaluation remains unclear. This mixed-methods study, conducted in an anaesthesiology residency programme at a large academic medical centre, examined how interviews contributed to candidate assessment and whether the addition of behavioural questions to interviews altered thei

Improving recruitment to healthcare research studies: clinician judgements explored for opting mental health service users out of the time to change viewpoint survey.

BACKGROUND: There are significant challenges across the research pathway, including participant recruitment. This paper aims to explore the impact of clinician recruitment decision-making on sampling for a national mental health survey. METHOD: Clinical teams in 20 English mental healthcare provider organisations screened caseload lists, opting-out people whom, in their judgement, should not be approached to participate in a survey about stigma and discrimination. The reasons for each individual opted-out were requested. We assess these reasons against study recruitment criteria and investiga
