BACKGROUND: Medications for opioid use disorder such as opioid agonist treatment (OAT, including methadone, buprenorphine) are the gold standard intervention for opioid use disorder (OUD). Persons with OUD have high rates of neurocognitive impairment and psychiatric and substance use disorders, but few studies have examined these characteristics in diverse patients initiating OAT in opioid treatment programs (OTPs). Additionally, in these individuals, poor neurocognitive functioning and psychiatric/other substance use disorders are associated with poor OUD treatment outcomes. Given rapid chang

Major depression (MD) is the most common psychiatric disorder after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Yet, diagnosing MD is often challenging because of cognitive, emotional, and somatic symptoms that overlap with TBI and other psychiatric disorders. Best current evidence suggests that depressed mood is characterized more by irritability, anger, and aggression than by sadness and tearfulness in persons with TBI. Rumination, self-criticism, and guilt may best differentiate depressed persons from nondepressed persons. Anxiety, aggression, sleep problems, alcohol use, lower-income levels, and poor so

Persons living with HIV (PLWH) are significantly more likely to meet criteria for a psychiatric disorder compared to the general population. To our knowledge there are no prior studies that report rates of psychiatric diagnosis documentation in electronic medical records (EMRs) of PLWH. The goal for this study was to report the rates of a variety of psychiatric diagnoses among PLWH in electronic medical records. Participants (n = 2,336) were enrolled in the Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) Longitudinal Database study at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA. Diagnostic codes were ext

Highlighting the development of in-patient psychoanalytical therapy the insufficiency of traditional therapeutical conceptions ("out-patient psychoanalysis in the hospital", "bipolar model of in-patient psychotherapy") in view of increasing numbers of patients with ego-structural disorders in psychosomatoses and borderline pathologies become clear. Their manifold splitting tendencies toward any conceptual distinction of the psychoanalytical session with its transferential processes on the one hand and the "actual" milieu of the ward on the other hand. This fact will be taken into account only

PURPOSE: Despite of higher rates of substance-related disorders in psychiatric patients and suicides than in the general population, there is no clear specificity to the relationship between nicotine use and other psychiatric disorders for suicide risk.
METHODS: One hundred and sixty-three suicides (mean age 49.8 +/- 19.3 years; 64.4% males; using psychological autopsy method) and 396 control persons (mean age 51.6 +/- 17.0 years; 55.8% males) were assessed with a standardised semi-structured interview including SCID-I and SCID-II (for DSM-IV). Suicides and controls were compared in terms of

The aim of the study was to assess suicide risk in psychiatric outpatients with specific cluster C personality disorders (avoidant, dependent, and obsessive-compulsive). A sample of 142 psychiatric outpatients was used for the study. The sample was composed of 87 outpatients meeting diagnostic criteria for a personality disorder and 53 psychiatric outpatients meeting criteria for an axis I disorder only. The results showed that dependent, but not avoidant or obsessive-compulsive, personality disorders, as well as the clusters A and B personality disorders, were significantly associated with su

Genetic bases of psychological stress resilience have been studied previously, but mechanisms and genetic variants which are involved in stress resilience are still unclear. The present study aimed to evaluate the associations between variants in dopaminergic pathway genes with stress resilience. Subjects of the present study were divided into four groups. Group A included persons with normal reactions to major life events stressors; group B included persons with an acute stress reaction to major life events stressor; group C included persons with normal reactions to Crises/catastrophes stress

In Northern Ireland, the current main legal framework for compulsory intervention is the Mental Health (Northern Ireland) Order 1986. It is a traditional mental health law which enables detention in hospital if mental disorder and risk criteria are met. However, under Article 3(2), it states that people should not be detained "by reason only of personality disorder". There has been a process of law reform in Northern Ireland to create a non-discriminatory, comprehensive legal framework for all. This resulted in the Mental Capacity Act (Northern Ireland) 2016. The Act, when fully implemented, w

Following the introduction to the history of the concepts of abnormal personality, with regard to the schizoid and schizotypal forms, we present their systematic assessment in the modern classification systems. Both, the schizoid and schizotypal forms, are usually considered as schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. Biological and clinical data indicate relations to other axis-I disorders as well. However there are few systematic and strictly controlled studies on the psychotherapeutic and pharmacological treatment of schizotypal and schizoid personality disorders. Basic theoretic assumptions concer

IMPORTANCE: Understanding the epidemiologic profile of the life course of mental disorders is fundamental for research and planning for health care. Although previous studies have used population surveys, informative and complementary estimates can be derived from population-based registers.
OBJECTIVE: To derive comprehensive and precise estimates of the incidence rate of and lifetime risk for any mental disorder and a range of specific mental disorders.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We conducted a follow-up study of all Danish residents (5.6 million persons), to whom all treatment is p

PURPOSE: Criminal victimization produces enormous personal and societal costs, yet few investigations have systematically examined substance use and psychiatric disorders of crime victims. Our objectives were to (i) examine the prevalence and patterns of criminal victimization in the United States and (ii) their associations with specific substance use disorders, prevalent psychiatric conditions, and violent and nonviolent antisocial behaviors in controlled multivariate analyses.
METHODS: Data were derived from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, a nationally

Suicide by asphyxiation using helium is the most widely-promoted method of "self-deliverance" by right-to-die advocates. However, little is known about persons committing such suicides or the circumstances and manner in which they are completed. Prior reports of suicides by asphyxiation involving helium were reviewed and deaths determined by the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to be helium-associated asphyxial suicides occurring between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2008 were included in a new case series examined in this article. The 10 asphyxial suicides involving heli

OBJECTIVE: This study examined relationships between homelessness, mental disorder, violence, and the use of psychiatric emergency services. To the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to examine these issues for all episodes of care in a psychiatric emergency service that serves an entire mental health system in a major city.
METHODS: Archival databases were examined to gather data on all individuals (N=2,294) who were served between January 1, 1997, and June 30, 1997, in the county hospital's psychiatric emergency service in San Francisco, California.
RESULTS: Homeless individuals a

Although perinatal factors are associated with the development of several psychiatric disorders, it is unknown whether these factors are linked with personality disorder. Cases of personality disorder were drawn from a national registry of all forensic psychiatric evaluations (n = 150). Two control groups were used: (1) A sample of forensic evaluations without any psychiatric disorder (n = 97) allowing for a nested case-control investigation; and (2) A population-based sample matched by age and gender with no history of psychiatric hospitalization (n = 1498). BACKGROUND: Homelessness continues to be a pressing public health concern in many countries, and mental disorders in homeless persons contribute to their high rates of morbidity and mortality. Many primary studies have estimated prevalence rates for mental disorders in homeless individuals. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies on the prevalence of any mental disorder and major psychiatric diagnoses in clearly defined homeless populations in any high-income country.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We systematically searched for observational studies that estimated prevalence rat

BACKGROUND: Sensory deprivation (SD) is a widely prevalent condition that leads to various health-related consequences and is also an important cause of disability worldwide. Earlier, SD experiments were used as research modalities to alter human behavior. In recent years, the focus has shifted to understand how SD can affect the mental health of individuals (with congenital or acquired sensory impairments). This narrative review focuses on the current understanding about the association of SD and psychiatric disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined specialized psychiatric hospitalization in Australia.
METHODS: Data from July 1998 to June 2005 from the National Hospital Morbidity Database, which includes all public and most private hospital stays in Australia, were analyzed.
RESULTS: Over the study period, there were 1,343,584 psychiatric discharges (including transfers, deaths, and changes in care type). There was an 18.0% increase in discharges per 1,000 persons and a 20.3% reduction in average length of stay. The rate of discharges decreased with age, and length of stay increased with age.
