Clostridia are ubiquitous Gram-positive bacteria whose toxins are responsible for serious diseases. In this article we report a case of foodborne botulism we have recently managed. Moreover, we briefly describe the major clinical syndromes caused by different species of Clostridium (except for C. difficile infections, as this subject has been previously extensively reviewed in this journal). Botulism causes a flaccid paralysis starting with cranial nerves. Administration of botulism anti-toxin should be rapidly considered as soon as botulism is suspected, as prognosis is largely dependent on t

BACKGROUND: Adherence rates for chronic pediatric conditions are approximately 50%. The primary objective of the study was to assess rates of adherence using four different measurement methods for children with cystic fibrosis (CF).
METHODS: Participants included 37 children with CF between 6 and 13 years of age and their primary caregivers. Adherence measures included parent and child self-reports, diary data, pharmacy refill history, and electronic monitors.
RESULTS: Results suggested that rates of adherence varied by treatment component and across measurement methods. However, when examin

Insomnia is one of the most common minor ailments to which patients seek advice in a community pharmacy setting. Due to the availability of a wide variety of over-the-counter (OTC) products, community pharmacists are in the front line to safe-guard patients looking for self-medication or advice for treatment of insomnia. The purpose of this study was to assess the content of community pharmacists' interactions with patients seeking advice for insomnia in Jordan. A cross-sectional study using a simulated patient methodology was conducted across a stratified convenience sample of community pharm

BACKGROUND: Effective outpatient pharmacy inventory management in tertiary care hospitals requires balancing rigorous cost containment with absolute clinical safety over multi-year operational cycles. Traditional ABC (Always, Better, Control) and VED (Vital, Essential, Desirable) matrices focus heavily on financial and basic clinical parameters but often overlook direct patient safety indicators and longitudinal consumption trends.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate outpatient pharmacy inventory patterns across three consecutive fiscal years (FY 2023-24 to FY 2025-26) using ABC and VED a

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is rapidly increasing worldwide. Pakistan has a high incidence rate of one in every nine women. The lack of awareness is the major reason for delayed diagnosis, thus resulting in high mortality. This study aimed to assess the impact of pharmacist-led breast cancer education at community pharmacies on promoting breast cancer awareness.
METHODOLOGY: A longitudinal pre-post intervention study was conducted on 319 participants using a self-designed questionnaire. During the pre-intervention phase, data were collected from participants at various community pharmacies empl

PURPOSE: Public and private payers have implemented benefit limitations to reduce high-risk opioid prescriptions. The effect of these policies on the increase of out-pocket payment is unclear. To understand this gap, we compared the discrepancies in trends between opioid prescription fills vs claims among Medicaid beneficiaries.
METHODS: Data from the Oregon Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) and Oregon Medicaid administrative claims were used to identify Medicaid beneficiaries 18 years and older enrolled at least one full month from 2015 to 2017. Generalized linear models assessed t

Prior authorization (PA) imposes substantial administrative burdens on clinicians, contributing to burnout, delayed care, and excess health care spending. Artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a tool to automate PA tasks in managed care pharmacy, yet concerns persist regarding transparency, bias, and overreliance on autonomous systems. This is particularly true in payer-deployed AI systems that may deny claims without adequate clinical review. This viewpoint proposes a pharmacist-overseen, AI-enabled system designed for provider organizations and health systems as an optimal model, integ

BACKGROUND: Telithromycin (Ketek) was approved in April 2004 for the treatment of acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (ABECB), bacterial sinusitis, and community-acquired pneumonia. The approval of telithromycin was controversial due to trial irregularities, noninferiority study designs, and use of foreign safety data. Safety concerns involving hepatotoxicity, myasthenia gravis exacerbation, and visual disturbances were increasingly documented in the literature after approval. On February 12, 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) removed the bacterial sinusitis and
