In 85 consecutive cases of ingestion of caustic material, 70 patients had oral burns, 29 incurred esophageal burns, and in three esophageal stricture developed, requiring repeated dilatation. Management involves early endoscopy to determine the extent of mucosal injury, antibiotics to reduce local or mediastinal infection, and steroids to prevent the chance for esophageal stricture.

The efficacy and safety of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for superficial cancer of the pharynx are still unclear. To identify clinicopathological features of superficial pharyngeal cancer, and the efficacy and safety of ESD, we retrospectively assessed 70 pharyngeal cancers in 59 patients who underwent ESD. Focal dermal hypoplasia is a rare congenital syndrome with dominant X-linked mode of inheritance characterized by a wide range of meso-ectodermal anomalies. The clinical variation is great, as explained by the Lyon hypothesis and mosaicism. Findings include skin atrophy along the lines of Blaschko and papillomas. Our case is striking with rapidly-growing giant pharyngeal papillomas which caused dysphagia and required resection.

Papillary thyroid cancer favors lymphatic spread both within the thyroid gland and to the cervical lymph nodes. Hematogenous spread rarely occurs in the lung, bones and brain. We report a case where metastatic nodules from papillary thyroid cancer were seen in the right aryepiglottic fold (supraglottis) and lateral wall of hypopharynx, an extremely rare event.

CONCLUSIONS: The histological changes of the pharynx and the larynx associated with surgically induced chronic acid reflux esophagitis were observed in rats. Chronic inflammatory change due to gastric acid reflux was found microscopically in the pharynx and larynx. This indicated that inflammatory changes due to gastric acid reflux are associated with the pathogenesis of laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD).

Nonmalignant ulcerous diseases of the mouth often require repeated histological and clinical observations for several weeks to establish a diagnosis. One patient with Wegener's disease, one with a necrotizing sialometaplasia, and a case of Sutton-type aphthosis outline these difficulties. In all three cases, only a synopsis of histology, laboratory findings, and clinical appearance led to the respective diagnosis.

A new complex of findings caused by cocaine abuse is presented. The complex consists of nasal collapse, septal perforation, palatal retraction, and pharyngeal wall ulceration. The findings and their causes are described. Pathologic evaluation to ensure that a concomitant disease, such as Wegener's granuloma, malignant reticulosis, autoimmune lesion, or various other destructive diseases, was not present was performed on only one patient.
