Southern Pine Beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) Pheromone Component trans-Verbenol: Enantiomeric Specificity and Potential as a Lure Adjuvant.

The southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) utilizes a multi-component aggregation pheromone to mediate mass-attacks and thereby colonize otherwise unsusceptible trees. Females produce the attractant frontalin and a synergist, trans-verbenol. We investigated trans-verbenol to determine whether enantiomeric composition, airborne concentration, and possibly other factors might affect its biological activity. Newly-emerged females from Mississippi populations produced 54-87% of the (-)-enantiomer; females initiating galleries in logs produce

Survivorship of Z-Pheromone Race European Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) on a Range of Host Plants Varying in Defensive Chemistry.

The European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner), was introduced in North America in the early 1900s and became a major pest of corn. After its introduction, it was found on > 200 other plant hosts, but corn remained its primary host. Early life history studies indicated that European corn borer had the potential of a wide host range. For nearly 80 yr before the introduction of Bt corn, the European corn borer was a major pest of corn in North America. This study investigated the growth and survivorship of the Z-pheromone race European corn borer on a range of hosts that vary in defensive

North American Invasion of the Tawny Crazy Ant (Nylanderia fulva) Is Enabled by Pheromonal Synergism from Two Separate Glands.

A new invader, the "tawny crazy ant", Nylanderia fulva (Hymenoptera: Formicidae; Formicinae), is displacing the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta (Formicidae: Myrmicinae), in the southern U.S., likely through its superior chemical arsenal and communication. Alone, formic acid is unattractive, but this venom (= poison) acid powerfully synergizes attraction of tawny crazy ants to volatiles from the Dufour's gland secretion of N. fulva workers, including the two major components, undecane and 2-tridecanone. The unexpected pheromonal synergism between the Dufour's gland and the venom gland

Host plant volatiles serve to increase the response of male European grape berry moths, Eupoecilia ambiguella, to their sex pheromone.

The European grape berry moth is an important pest in vineyards. Males respond to the female-produced sex pheromone released from a piezo nebulizer in a dose-dependent manner in a wind tunnel: <50% arrive at the source at 5-50 pg/min (underdosed), 80% arrive at 100 pg/min to 10 ng/min (optimal) and <20% arrive at 100 ng/min (overdosed). Males responding to overdosed pheromone show in flight arrestment at 80 cm from the source. Host plant chemostimuli for Eupoecilia ambiguella increase the responses of males to underdosed and overdosed pheromone. (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, (+)-terpinen-4-ol, (E)-beta-ca

The pheromone androstenol (5 alpha-androst-16-en-3 alpha-ol) is a neurosteroid positive modulator of GABAA receptors.

Androstenol is a steroidal compound belonging to the group of odorous 16-androstenes, first isolated from boar testes and also found in humans. Androstenol has pheromone-like properties in both animals and humans, but the molecular targets of its pheromonal activity are unknown. Androstenol is structurally similar to endogenous A-ring reduced neurosteroids that act as positive modulators of GABA(A) receptors. Here we show that androstenol has neurosteroid-like activity as a GABA(A) receptor modulator. In whole-cell recordings from cerebellar granule cells, androstenol (but not its 3beta-epimer

Unusual pheromone receptor neuron responses in heliothine moth antennae derived from inter-species imaginal disc transplantation.

Single-cell electrophysiological recordings were obtained from olfactory receptor neurons housed in sensilla trichodea along the adult antennae arising from transplantation of the antennal imaginal discs between larval male Helicoverpa zea and Heliothis virescens. The olfactory receptor neurons from the majority of type C sensilla sampled on transplanted antennae displayed response characteristics consistent with those of the species that donated the antennae. However, some of the sensilla type C sampled in either transplant type contained olfactory receptor neurons that responded in a manner

Two-step regulation of bouquet formation by mating pheromone signaling and Pat1 activity reduction during fission yeast meiosis.

Upon meiosis initiation in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe, centromeres detach from the spindle pole body (SPB), while telomeres cluster at the SPB, forming the bouquet, which promotes homologous chromosome pairing. Bouquet formation is regulated by mating pheromone signaling and Pat1 kinase, a central regulator of meiosis. Centromere detachment also requires telomere clustering-dependent SPB recruitment of the telomere component Taz1. However, the precise underlying regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. Here, using a haploid cell system that allows synchronous meiosis induction, w

Evaluating the impact of a synthetic predator pheromone, a novel pest management tool, on target pests and insect communities in potato fields.

Despite their reputation for species specificity, pheromones can influence interactions across trophic levels. This is particularly relevant in agricultural systems where predator-derived cues could influence pest and natural enemies. The predatory spined soldier bug, Podisus maculiventris (Say) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), preys upon the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), a major pest of solanaceous crops. Previous field work shows that a synthetic aggregation pheromone of P. maculiventris reduces beetle larval abundance through non-consumptive …

Functional Nanovesicle-Embedded Hydrogel Biosensors for the Real-Time Monitoring of Queen Mandibular Pheromone in Both Aqueous and Gaseous Environments.

Monitoring of the presence of a queen bee in hives is essential for the sustainability of healthy honey bee colonies. However, most beekeepers have relied on manual and visual inspections to assess the queen presence in a hive, which is not suitable for early diagnosis of queen loss. In this study, a functional nanovesicle-embedded hydrogel biosensor platform is developed for the real-time and direct monitoring of 9-oxo-2-decenoic acid (9-ODA), a main component of the queen mandibular pheromone, in both liquid- and gas-phase environments. Here, a black phosphorus-based field-effect transistor

Sexual experience with a known male modulates c-Fos expression in response to mating and male pheromone exposure in female mice.

Sexually naïve female mice are not sexually receptive in their first mating opportunity. Four to five sexual encounters are needed to display high sexual receptivity as assessed by the lordosis reflex. The neuronal changes induced by sexual experience are not well understood. In this study, we evaluated if repeated sexual stimulation with the same male was associated with an increase in the neuronal activity evaluated by c-Fos expression in brain structures associated with the control of sexual behavior such as the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB), ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH), and the medial

Effects of Two Conventional Insecticides on Male-Specific Sex Pheromone Discrimination and Mate Choice in Trichogramma chilonis (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae).

Trichogramma chilonis Ishii is an important natural enemy of many lepidopterous pests on vegetables and field crops. The effects of two conventional insecticides on male-specific sex pheromone discrimination and mate choice in T. chilonis was evaluated in the laboratory. Beta-cypermethrin LC20 exposure induced decreases in male conspecific sex pheromone discrimination and mating rate in T. chilonis, and these decreases were not due to the lower locomotor activity of the surviving T. chilonis males. Spinosad LC20 exposure caused a significant decrease in male locomotor activity of T. chilonis,

Expression of the mevalonate pathway enzymes in the Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae) sex pheromone gland demonstrated by an integrated proteomic approach.

UNLABELLED: In Latin America, Lutzomyia longipalpis is the main vector of the protozoan parasite Leishmania infantum, which is the causal agent of American Visceral Leishmaniasis. This insect uses male-produced pheromones for mate recognition. Elucidation of pheromone biogenesis or its regulation may enable molecular strategies for mating disruption and, consequently, the vector's population management. Motivated by our recent results of the transcriptomic characterization of the L. longipalpis pheromone gland, we performed a proteomic analysis of this tissue combining SDS-PAGE, and mass spect…

Biosynthetic pathway and mating-regulated synthesis of 2-(undecyloxy)-ethanol in Monochamus saltuarius: Implications for pheromone-mediated communication and pest management.

Pine wilt disease (PWD), caused by the pine wood nematode (PWN, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus), poses a severe threat to pine forests worldwide. In northeastern China, Monochamus saltuarius (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is a primary vector of this disease. The male-produced aggregation pheromone 2-undecyloxy-1-ethanol plays a critical role in mating and reproductive behavior across several Monochamus species. Understanding its biosynthesis can reveal key targets for pheromone disruption, providing a foundation for pest management. In this study, we investigated the site, temporal dynamics, and regul

An oviposition pheromone, hexadecanoic acid, found on the eggs of Phlebotomus papatasi from Central Tunisia, attracts gravid females and stimulates oviposition.

Phlebotomus papatasi is a vector of Leishmania major, the etiologic agent of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis, a disfiguring and debilitating disease. In this study, we identified fatty acids found on the exterior of eggs laid by female P. papatasi that could be potential oviposition pheromones. We tested the effect of different treatments on 1) the number of eggs laid and 2) the spatial distribution of eggs laid. The treatments included three quantities of eggs (80, 160 and 320), hexane extracts of 160 eggs, 160 eggs after being washed with hexane to remove any pheromones, and three concentra…

Effect of the combined application of microencapsulated synthetic oviposition pheromone (MSP) with different larvicidal agents on the oviposition of Culex pipiens biotype molestus.

BACKGROUND: Attract-and-kill strategies, in which a behavior-modifying stimulus (e.g. a pheromone) is integrated with a pest control agent, have lately attracted increased interest for mosquito control. Previously, it was demonstrated that the polyurea microencapsulated synthetic oviposition pheromone 6-acetoxy-5-hexadecanolide (MSP) was sufficiently attractive to gravid females of Culex pipiens L. biotype molestus Førskal (Diptera: Culicidae) for a period of 40 days. Furthermore, it was shown that MSP could be effectively combined with the organophosphate temephos to achieve efficient mosquit

A novel bio-engineering approach to generate an eminent surface-functionalized template for selective detection of female sex pheromone of Helicoverpa armigera.

Plant pests exert serious effects on food production due to which the global crop yields are reduced by ~20-40 percent per year. Hence to meet the world's food needs, loses of food due to crop pests must be reduced. Herein the silicon dioxide based MEMS devices are covalently functionalized for robust and efficient optical sensing of the female sex pheromones of the pests like Helicoverpa armigera for the first time in literature. The functionalized devices are also capable of selectively measuring the concentration of this pheromone at femtogram level which is much below the concentration of …

Synthetic sex pheromone in a long-lasting lure attracts the visceral leishmaniasis vector, Lutzomyia longipalpis, for up to 12 weeks in Brazil.

Current control methodologies have not prevented the spread of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) across Brazil. Here, we describe the development of a new tool for controlling the sand fly vector of the disease: a long-lasting lure, which releases a synthetic male sex pheromone, attractive to both sexes of Lutzomyia longipalpis. This device could be used to improve the effectiveness of residual insecticide spraying as a means of sand fly control, attracting L. longipalpis to insecticide-treated animal houses, where they could be killed in potentially large numbers over a number of weeks.
