Thermoelectric performance of Janus monolayers embedded in MX2-based superlattices: a computational insight.

In this study, we explore a strategy to enhance the thermoelectric (TE) performance of materials by constructing Janus-embedded superlattices (SLs), where the incorporation of Janus layers at the internal interfaces and van der Waals (vdW) interactions collectively modulate electronic and phonon transport properties. Using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) and Boltzmann transport theory, we investigate three SL configurations-HfSe2/HfSSe/HfTe2, HfSe2/HfSTe/HfTe2, and HfSe2/HfSeTe/HfTe2-designed by embedding a Janus MXY (M = Hf; X/Y = S, Se, and Te) monolayer between conventional

Pressure-Induced Structural Phase Transition and Superconductivity in NaSn5.

The structural and electronic properties of the tin-rich compound NaSn5 were investigated under pressures of up to 10 GPa on the basis of th … perconductivity in the P6/mmm phase. The strong EPC in the P6/mmm phase is mainly attributed to the phonons from Sn1 atoms together with electrons from the Sn1 py and Sn1 pz states. The calculated superconducting critical temperature Tc of the P6/mmm phase is 5.91 K at 1.85 GPa. This study provides a new clue for designing intercalated compounds with supe …

Beating signals in CdSe quantum dots measured by low-temperature 2D spectroscopy.

Advances in ultrafast spectroscopy can provide access to dynamics involving nontrivial quantum correlations and their evolutions. In coherent 2D spectroscopy, the oscillatory time dependence of a signal is a signature of such quantum dynamics. Here, we study such beating signals in electronic coherent 2D spectroscopy of CdSe quantum dots (CdSe QDs) at 77 K. The beating signals are analyzed in terms of their positive and negative Fourier components. We conclude that the beatings originate from coherent LO-phonons of CdSe QDs. No evidence for the QD size dependence of the LO-phonon frequency was…

Universal empirical scaling of low-temperature heat capacity van Hove signature in classical and quantum cryocrystals.

We analyze the low-temperature isochoric heat capacity of a broad set of cryocrystals and show that the hump in the Debye-reduced function [Formula: see text], which originates from the first van Hove singularity of the phonon spectrum, can be captured within a single universal description. Specifically, we demonstrate that the hump is reproduced by a dimensionless function [Formula: see text] that depends only on the magnitude of the feature and the characteristic temperature [Formula: see text], without requiring a system-specific model beyond the standard behavior of the phonon density of s

Janus β-PdXY (X/Y = S, Se, Te) materials with high anisotropic thermoelectric performance.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have garnered considerable attention as emerging thermoelectric (TE) materials owing to their unique density of states (DOS) near the Fermi level. We investigate the TE performance of Janus β-PdXY (X/Y = S, Se, Te) monolayer materials as a function of carrier concentration and temperature in the mid-range from 300 to 800 K by combining density functional theory (DFT) and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. The phonon dispersion spectra and AIMD simulations confirm their thermal and dynamic stability. The transport calculation results reveal the highly anis

Anderson Localization in a Two-Dimensional Metal.

Anderson localization is anticipated to play a pivotal role in the manifestation of superconducting phases, optimal thermoelectric properties, and the quantum anomalous Hall effect. Dimensionality plays a central role in the physics of Anderson localization. Previous studies of localization in 2D conductors have relied on thin metallic films produced by vapor deposition, but challenges such as domain size effects, grain boundaries, and strain continue to complicate interpretation. Here, we overcome these challenges by investigating localization physics in Pd_{5}AlI_{2}, a van der Waals metal t

Origin of the Temperature-Induced Gap Bowing of Formamidinium-Methylammonium Lead Iodide Perovskites: Role of Cationic Rattlers.

Understanding the temperature dependence of semiconductor band gaps is essential for optimizing optoelectronic devices. However, the origin … electron-phonon coupling mechanism linked to mixed vibrational modes, which combine inorganic-cage phonons involving octahedral tilting with low-frequency FA librations, called FA rattlers. As shown in the revised composition-temperature phase diagram, this occurs in the orthorhombic and (pseudo)tetragonal low-temperature phases, presumably featuring str …

Hot carrier decay dynamics of van der Waals room temperature ferroelectric α-In2Se3.

In this study, we investigated the hot carrier decay dynamics of two-dimensional room temperature ferroelectric α-In2Se3via femtosecond transient optical spectroscopy. The photo-excited hot carriers in α-In2Se3 decay via electron-phonon coupling (τ1) and inter-layer charge transfer (τ2). We observe a change in the slope of the τ1-1-T curve near 145 K, which indicates the change in temperature-dependent phonon excitation of α-In2Se3. Below 145 K, the dephase rate τ2-1 shows an unusual temperature dependence, τ2-1 ∝ T-1, while it exhibits a linear increase with temperature above 145 K. The tempe

Lattice thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of the single-layer penta-NiN2 explored by a deep-learning interatomic potential.

Penta-NiN2, a novel pentagonal 2D sheet with potential nanoelectronic applications, is investigated in terms of its lattice thermal conductivity, stability, and mechanical behavior. A deep learning interatomic potential (DLP) is firstly generated from ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) data and then utilized for classical molecular dynamics simulations. The DLP's accuracy is verified, showing strong agreement with AIMD results. The dependence of thermal conductivity on size, temperature, and tensile strain, reveals important insights into the material's thermal properties. Additionally, the m

Biomechanics of fibrous proteins of the extracellular matrix studied by Brillouin scattering.

Brillouin light scattering (BLS) spectroscopy is a technique that is able to detect thermally excited phonons within a material. The speed of propagation of these phonons can be determined from the magnitude of the Brillouin frequency shift between incident and scattered light, thereby providing a measure of the mechanical properties of the material in the gigahertz range. The mechanical properties of the extracellular matrices of biological tissues and their constituent biopolymers are important for normal tissue function and disturbances in these properties are widely implicated in disease. …

Regulation of the Thermal and Electrical Transport Properties of Large-Pore Borophene Nanoribbons Based on Molecular Surface Adsorption Engineering.

Large-pore borophene, a novel two-dimensional (2D) material with exceptional electrical properties and unique electronic structure, shows thermal and electrical potential in nanoribbon configurations due to quantum confinement effects. Surface adsorption is an effective strategy to tune the physicochemical properties of low-dimensional materials due to enhanced electron/phonon scattering effects. In this work, thermal/electric transport behavior of large-pore borophene nanoribbons (LH_ψ) with surface-adsorbed DBHD molecules was systematically investigated by using density functional theory (DF

Morphological dependent exciton dynamics and thermal transport in MoSe2 films.

Thermal transport and exciton dynamics of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) play an immense role in next-generation electronic, photonic, and thermoelectric devices. In this work, we synthesize distinct morphologies (snow-like and hexagonal) of a trilayer MoSe2 film over the SiO2/Si substrate via the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method and investigated their morphological dependent exciton dynamics and thermal transport behaviour for the first time to the best of our knowledge. Firstly, we studied the role of spin-orbit and interlayer couplings both theoretically as we

A unified understanding of minimum lattice thermal conductivity.

We propose a first-principles model of minimum lattice thermal conductivity ([Formula: see text]) based on a unified theoretical treatment of thermal transport in crystals and glasses. We apply this model to thousands of inorganic compounds and find a universal behavior of [Formula: see text] in crystals in the high-temperature limit: The isotropically averaged [Formula: see text] is independent of structural complexity and bounded within a range from ∼0.1 to ∼2.6 W/(m K), in striking contrast to the conventional phonon gas model which predicts no lower bound. We unveil the underlying physics

"Green" Aqueous Synthesis and Advanced Spectral Characterization of Size-Selected Cu2ZnSnS4 Nanocrystal Inks.

Structure, composition, and optical properties of colloidal mercaptoacetate-stabilized Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) nanocrystal inks produced by a "green" method directly in aqueous solutions were characterized. A size-selective precipitation procedure using 2-propanol as a non-solvent allows separating a series of fractions of CZTS nanocrystals with an average size (bandgap) varying from 3 nm (1.72 eV) to 2 nm (2.04 eV). The size-selected CZTS nanocrystals revealed also phonon confinement, with the main phonon mode frequency varying by about 4 cm-1 between 2 nm and 3 nm NCs.

Lattice vibrations and electronic transitions in the rare-earth metals: yttrium, gadolinium and lutetium.

Lattice vibrations in high-pressure phases of Y, Gd and Lu were studied by Raman spectroscopy. The observed phonon frequencies decrease towards the transitions to the dhcp and fcc phases. There is evidence that the entire structural sequence [Formula: see text] under pressure for the individual regular rare-earth metals and along the lanthanide series at ambient pressure involve softening of certain acoustic and optical phonon modes and of the elastic shear modulus C(44). Comparison is made to transitions between close-packed lattices in other metals, and possible correlations to s-d electron

Strain Engineering of MoS2 for Overcoming Thermal Bottlenecks in Next-Generation Energy-Efficient Electronics.

The relentless demand for energy-efficient electronics creates a critical thermal bottleneck. A long-standing paradigm holds that compressive strain universally degrades thermal transport in two-dimensional (2D) materials by inducing phonon-scattering wrinkles. Here, we overturn this in MoS2 by demonstrating that substrate-confined, wrinkle-free compression drastically enhances its in-plane thermal conductivity. This feature is achieved through a substrate confinement strategy that enables uniform, wrinkle-free compression. We experimentally measured a remarkable 40% boost in thermal conductiv

Bilayer Borophenes Establish a New Upper Limit for Elemental Superconducting Transition Temperatures.

Elemental superconductors serve as essential model systems because their compositional simplicity enables fundamental mechanisms to be probe … el and promote cooperative electron-phonon interactions, in which p_{x,y} states couple to in-plane phonons and p_{z} states to out-of-plane modes. A high-throughput search of more than 9000 bilayer configurations identifies an AA-stacked, low-energy v_{1/7} structure with T_{c}≈68  K, setting a new record for elemental superconductivity.

Ab Initio Investigation of the Physical Properties of Pb-Rich Compounds Pb2X (X = Rh, Pd, and Au).

In this study, detailed physical properties including electronic, elastic, mechanical, phonon, and electron-phonon interaction properties of three Pb-rich compounds Pb2X (X = Rh, Pd, and Au) have been researched by performing scalar relativistic and full relativistic ab initio pseudopotential calculations based on density functional theory with its generalized gradient approximation. A comparison of scalar relativistic and full relativistic results reveals that the existence of Pb 6p electrons at the Fermi level increases with the enhanced mass of the X element in Pb2X compounds, making the ef

Metavalent-Like Bonding Character Drives Giant Anharmonicity and Ultralow Thermal Conductivity in Rocksalt BeO.

Identifying materials with intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity (κL) underpins thermoelectric and phase-change technologies, yet simple structural descriptors often fail to capture how chemical bonding controls lattice dynamics. Here, we compare thermal transport in two BeO polymorphs of identical chemistry and atomic mass: covalent zincblende (zb) and metavalent-like rocksalt (rs). Despite being denser, rs-BeO exhibits a κL more than an order of magnitude below zb-BeO (24 vs 357 W m-1 K-1 at 300 K), breaking the conventional density-κL correlation. Ab initio bonding analysis traces
