Aminophosphonic acids and derivatives. Synthesis and biological applications.

In recent years, phosphonic acids and their derivatives have received increasing attention as analogues of a series of naturally occurring phosphates and as "bio-isosteric phosphorus analogues" of amino acids. Unlike a phosphate group, the phosphonate moiety is not readily hydrolyzed, in a biological environment, by the enzymes involved in the phosphate cleavage. This feature makes these compounds extremely useful in several applications, in metabolic regulation, in enhancement or inhibition studies, in the development of potential drugs against several metabolic disorders. The great potential

Rapid and portable electrochemical quantification of phosphorus.

Phosphorus is one of the key indicators of eutrophication levels in natural waters where it exists mainly as dissolved phosphorus. Various analytical protocols exist to provide an offsite analysis, and a point of site analysis is required. The current standard method recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the detection of total phosphorus is colorimetric and based upon the color of a phosphomolybdate complex formed as a result of the reaction between orthophosphates and molybdates ions where ascorbic acid and antimony potassium tartrate are added and serve as reducing age

Fabricating a stable interface of tetracoordinated-phosphorus and framework Al within P-doping ZSM-5 zeolite for catalytic methanol-to-propylene reaction.

Phosphorus (P)-doping H-ZSM-5 zeolites, which is crucial for industrial applications, aim to adjust both acidity and framework stability while optimizing product distribution in heterogeneous catalysis. Nonetheless, current phosphating methods often suffer from inadequate phosphorus dispersion and unclear interfacial interactions with framework aluminum (Al). In this work, P-doping ZSM-5 zeolites were successfully one-step prepared by using tributylphosphine served as an organophosphorus precursor, assisting by density functional theory calculations. On account of this, a stable interface of t

Synthesis of Geminal Azido-Halo Compounds and α-Azidoalkyl Esters from Aldehydes via α-Azido Alcohols.

α-Azido alcohols are generated by treating aldehydes with hydrazoic acid in chloroform. These adducts are transformed into geminal azido-halo compounds through the reaction with phosphorus trichloride or phosphorus tribromide, whereas α-azidoalkyl esters are isolated after interaction with acyl chlorides.

Resin-based iron-manganese binary oxide for phosphate selective removal.

Adsorption technology can effectively remove phosphorus from water and realize phosphorus recovery. Hence, it is used to curb the eutrophication of water and alleviate the crisis caused by the shortage of phosphorus resources. Resin has been attracting increasing interest as an ideal adsorption material; however, its practical application is greatly affected by environmental factors. To solve the competitive adsorption and pore blockage caused by humic acid and coexisting ions during the removal of phosphorus by ion-exchange resin, this study has developed an iron-manganese oxide-modified resi

Comparative study of polycarboxylic acids for sustainable crosslinking of silk fabrics: Evaluating flame retardancy and physical performances.

For protein fibers, polycarboxylic acids represent a green strategy to enhance durability without using formaldehyde. This study evaluated the physical and flame retardant properties of silk fabrics treated with three formaldehyde-free crosslinkers: citric acid (CA), 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA), and 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTCA). Results showed that these acids bond with silk protein through esterification and amidation, improving washing durability. Particularly, PBTCA integrates phosphorus into silk, boosting flame retardancy. While BTCA led to the highest

Releasing phosphorus from calcium for struvite fertilizer production from anaerobically digested dairy effluent.

Being a non-renewable resource and a source of potential water pollution, phosphorus could be recovered from animal manure in the form of struvite (MgNH4PO4.6H2O) to be used as a slow-release fertilizer. It was found recently that the majority of phosphorus in anaerobically digested dairy effluent is tied up in a fine suspended calcium-phosphate solid, thus becoming unavailable for struvite formation. Acidification and use of a chelating agent were investigated for converting the calcium-associated phosphorus in the digested effluent to dissolved phosphate ions, so that struvite can be produce

Nicotinic acid and nicotinamide: a review of their use for hyperphosphatemia in dialysis patients.

Phosphate binders have traditionally been used to treat hyperphosphatemia, a common complication in patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD). New evidence suggests that nicotinic acid and its metabolites may effectively decrease phosphorus absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby reducing serum phosphorus concentrations. We conducted a literature search to identify studies of patients with ESRD on dialysis that evaluated the role of niacin and related compounds in decreasing serum phosphorus levels. We searched PubMed using the search terms niacin, nicotinic acid, niacinamide, nic

Pseudomonas enhances soil phosphorus bioavailability and maize seedling growth and affects soil microbial community.

UNLABELLED: The low bioavailability of phosphorus in soil is a significant limiting factor for crop production, and inoculation with phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) has been recognized as an effective method. In this study, two strains with high phosphate-solubilizing ability, namely, Pseudomonas veronii 1416X3 and Pseudomonas sp. 1616X1, were obtained and used in pot experiments to investigate the effects of strains on phosphorus content in soil, maize plant growth, and soil microbial community. Results showed that after 4-day post-inoculation with PSB, the content of available phosphor

Effects of Different Culture Conditions on the Synthesis and Distribution of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (EPA and ARA) in Porphyridium purpureum.

The arachidonic acid (C20:4 ω6, ARA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5 ω3, EPA) from Porphyridium purpureum endow this microalga with potential utilization value, but their distribution patterns remain poorly understood. In this study, a nitrogen concentration, a phosphorus concentration, light intensity and salinity were applied to investigate the synthesis and distribution patterns of EPA and ARA in P. purpureum by measuring growth, lipid content, lipid fractions, fatty acid composition, and the levels of EPA and ARA in storage lipids and membrane lipids. The results show that the optimal con

Characterization of phosphonate-based antiscalants used in drinking water treatment plants by anion-exchange chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

In drinking water production, phosphonates are frequently applied as antiscalants in order to prevent the precipitation of salts on reverse osmosis membranes. Whereas the nominal constituents are defined, phosphonate-based antiscalants were found to contain significant amounts of undeclared phosphorous contaminants, particularly noticeable technical diethylenetriamine penta(methylene phosphonic acid) (DTPMP). Following a literature review on impurities of phosphonic acids, separation by anion exchange chromatography coupled with ICP-MS- and ESI-TOF-detection allowed the comprehensive character

Direct effect of phosphorus on PTH secretion from whole rat parathyroid glands in vitro.

Phosphorus retention is an important factor in the development of hyperparathyroidism secondary to renal failure. In vivo manipulation of phosphorus is associated with changes in serum calcium and calcitriol levels which in turn can modify parathyroid hormone synthesis and secretion. The present in vitro study evaluates whether high extracellular phosphorus has a direct effect on parathyroid hormone secretion. Fresh rat parathyroid glands were incubated in a media with phosphorus concentrations of 1, 2, 3, and 4 mM and subsequently exposed to calcium levels ranging from 0.4 to 1.35 mM. In 1.25

Convenient synthesis of N-alkoxymethylbarbituric acids and N-alkoxymethylhydantoins.

A simple one-step method for the N-alkoxymethylation of barbituric acids and hydantoins is presented. The compounds are N-methoxymethylated or N-ethoxymethylated using phosphorus pentoxide and dimethoxymethane or diethoxymethane, respectively, in a chlorinated solvent. 1-Methoxymethyl-3-ethyl-5-phenylhydantoin showed significant anticonvulsant activity in the subcutaneous pentylenetetrazol test, while 1,3-bis(methoxymethyl)-5-ethyl-5-(p-tolyl) barbituric acid was inactive.

Phosphorus-Nitrogen Heterocycles Derived from Chelating N-Donor Ligands: Historical Advances, Recent Highlights, and Outlook.

The exploration of phosphorus-nitrogen heterocycles derived from chelating N-donor ligands is an area of research that has lagged behind the development of similar heterocycles based on other main group elements, most notably boron. The fact that phosphorus and nitrogen are both group 15 elements and that their compounds are most commonly viewed as Lewis bases likely contributes to this observation. However, through judicious ligand design and creative use of phosphorus sources that render phosphorus as Lewis acidic and/or electron poor, a variety of heterocyclic architectures are possible. In

Phosphate-solubilizing function of Pediococcus pentosaceus PSM16 and its underlying mechanism.

Phosphorus is a crucial nutrient for plant growth, but only a limited quantity is typically accessible in the soil for plants to absorb directly. Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) can convert inorganic phosphorus compounds into forms that are more readily usable for plant nutrition. Our previous research has verified the function of Pediococcus pentosaceus PSM16 in degrading phytic acid. On this basis, we further explored the phosphorus-solubilizing capacity of PSM16 and evaluated its potential for practical application in this study. The results indicated that PSM16 significantly enhanced
