A systematic review of brain stimulation in functional seizures.

BACKGROUND: Functional (dissociative) seizures (FDS) are disabling neurological disorders characterized by significant diagnostic and therap … ed pathophysiology for FDS. Diagnostic studies confirmed the utility of provocative techniques like photic stimulation in inducing events during video-EEG monitoring. Adverse effects were generally mild and transient, with headache being the most common. CONCLUSION: Brain stimulation, particularly non-invasive modalities targeting key nodes within fronto-limbic-mot …

Top-down influence of areas 21a and 7 differently affects the surround suppression of V1 neurons in cats.

Surround suppression (SS) is a phenomenon whereby a neuron's response to stimuli in its central receptive field (cRF) is suppressed by stimuli extending to its surround receptive field (sRF). Recent evidence show that top-down influence contributed to SS in the primary visual cortex (V1). However, how the top-down influence from different high-level cortical areas affects SS in V1 has not been comparatively observed. The present study applied transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to modulate the neural activity in area 21a (A21a) and area 7 (A7) of cats and examined the changes in the

Using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to selectively modulate the face inversion effect and N170 event-related potentials.

We report a large study (n = 72) using combined transcranial direct current stimulation-electroencephalography (tDCS-EEG) to investigate the modulation of perceptual learning indexed by the face inversion effect. Participants were engaged with an old/new recognition task involving intermixed upright and inverted, normal and Thatcherized faces. The accuracy results showed anodal tDCS delivered at the Fp3 scalp area (cathode/reference electrode placed at Fp2) increased the behavioural inversion effect for normal faces versus sham/control and this covaried with a modulation of the N170 event-rela

tACS phase-specifically biases brightness perception of flickering light.

BACKGROUND: Visual phenomena like brightness illusions impressively demonstrate the highly constructive nature of perception. In addition to physical illumination, the subjective experience of brightness is related to temporal neural dynamics in visual cortex. OBJECTIVE: Here, we asked whether biasing the temporal pattern of neural excitability in visual cortex by transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) modulates brightness perception of concurrent rhythmic visual stimuli. METHODS: Participants performed a brightness discrimination task of two flickering lights, one of which was

Replication of a skills assessment for auditory-visual conditional discrimination training.

Auditory-visual conditional discrimination training (e.g., receptive identification training, listener responses; AVCD) is ubiquitous in early intervention and special education programs. Nevertheless, some learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) do not appear to benefit from this training despite use of empirically validated treatments. To prevent exposure to extended training that does not lead to learning, a skills assessment that measures skills related to AVCD training will be useful for educators and practitioners. The current study replicated the skills assessment developed and eva

Somatosensory contribution to audio-visual speech processing.

Recent studies have demonstrated that the auditory speech perception of a listener can be modulated by somatosensory input applied to the facial skin suggesting that perception is an embodied process. However, speech perception is a multisensory process involving both the auditory and visual modalities. It is unknown whether and to what extent somatosensory stimulation to the facial skin modulates audio-visual speech perception. If speech perception is an embodied process, then somatosensory stimulation applied to the perceiver should influence audio-visual speech processing. Using the McGurk

tACS facilitates flickering driving by boosting steady-state visual evoked potentials.

Objective. There has become of increasing interest in transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) since its inception nearly a decade ago. tACS in modulating brain state is an active area of research and has been demonstrated effective in various neuropsychological and clinical domains. In the visual domain, much effort has been dedicated to brain rhythms and rhythmic stimulation, i.e. tACS. However, less is known about the interplay between the rhythmic stimulation and visual stimulation.Approach.Here, we used steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP), induced by flickering driving

Verbal task demands are key in explaining the relationship between paired-associate learning and reading ability.

Paired-associate learning (PAL) tasks measure the ability to form a novel association between a stimulus and a response. Performance on such tasks is strongly associated with reading ability, and there is increasing evidence that verbal task demands may be critical in explaining this relationship. The current study investigated the relationships between different forms of PAL and reading ability. A total of 97 children aged 8-10 years completed a battery of reading assessments and six different PAL tasks (phoneme-phoneme, visual-phoneme, nonverbal-nonverbal, visual-nonverbal, nonword-nonword,

Transcranial Random Noise Stimulation Boosts Early Motion Perception Learning Rather than the Later Performance Plateau.

The effect of transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) on visual perceptual learning has only been investigated during early training sessions, and the influence of tRNS on later performance is unclear. We engaged participants first in 8 days of training to reach a plateau (Stage 1) and then in continued training for 3 days (Stage 2). In the first group, tRNS was applied to visual areas of the brain while participants were trained on a coherent motion direction identification task over a period of 11 days (Stage 1 + Stage 2). In the second group, participants completed an 8-day training pe

Comparison of uni- and multimodal motion stimulation on visual neglect: A proof-of-concept study.

Spatial neglect is characterized by the failure to attend stimuli presented in the contralesional space. Typically, the visual modality is more severely impaired than the auditory one. This dissociation offers the possibility of cross-modal interactions, whereby auditory stimuli may have beneficial effects on the visual modality. A new auditory motion stimulation method with music dynamically moving from the right to the left hemispace has recently been shown to improve visual neglect. The aim of the present study was twofold: a) to compare the effects of unimodal auditory against visual motio

The chronometry of symmetry detection in the lateral occipital (LO) cortex.

The lateral occipital cortex (LO) has been shown to code the presence of both vertical and horizontal visual symmetry in dot patterns. However, the specific time window at which LO is causally involved in symmetry encoding has not been investigated. This was assessed using a chronometric transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) approach. Participants were presented with a series of dot configurations and instructed to judge whether they were symmetric along the vertical axis or not while receiving a double pulse of TMS over either the right LO (rLO) or the vertex (baseline) at different time wi

Examining state-dependent effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on visual search and executive function tasks.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on cognitive performance are influenced by the state-dependency of targeted cortical regions. METHODS: In a mixed within- and between-participants design, we targeted either the right parietal or left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and measured effects on visual search versus inhibitory control (respectively). Critically, during active and sham stimulation, participants were exposed to an unrelated or task-congruent prime. RESULTS: Analyses examined whether priming induced s

Processing units in word reading by disabled readers.

The article addresses the issue of whether disabled readers can be instructed to use within-word (multiletter) units. Several analogy methods were employed. In Experiments 1 and 2 short lists of words that differ in only one letter were repeatedly practiced. In Experiment 3 the subjects blended written and spoken words in which the place of segmentation was systematically manipulated. Subjects were tested in all experiments on the reading of practiced words, on nonpracticed words that orthographically as well as phonologically resemble the practiced words, and on nonpracticed nonsimilar words.

The incorporation of level and level-invariant cues for the detection of a tone added to noise.

The potential contribution of level-dependent and level-invariant cues for the detection of a tone added to narrow bands of noise was assessed in two experiments. In the first experiment, three masker bandwidths, 40, 120, and 360 Hz, and three center frequencies, 600, 1800, and 5400 Hz were tested. For the tone-in-noise detection task, the signal to be detected was a tone with a frequency equal to the center frequency of the noise masker. The level of the added tone was adjusted so as to generate d' scores of approximately 2 in a two-alternative, forced-choice procedure. Then, the distribution

Distinct early and late subcomponents of the photic blink reflex: response characteristics in patients with retrogeniculate lesions.

To assess cortical contributions to the photic blink reflex, signal averaged electromyograms (EMG) were compared for responses to strobe flashes presented within the blind and sighted hemifields of 13 patients with occipital lobe lesions. Reflexes evoked by flashes within the scotoma were virtually identical to those evoked by flashes within the intact visual field. This suggests that both the early and late components of this reflex (R50 and R80, respectively) are mediated by subcortical structures that do not require, or benefit from, conscious visual processing. Additional findings included

Unique Characteristics of the Photoparoxysmal Response in Patients With Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis Type 2: Can EEG Be a Biomarker?

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to identify unique features of the photoparoxysmal response seen in patients with neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosi … neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis type 2. This was most commonly seen with low frequency intermittent photic stimulation (76%) which often occurred in a time-locked fashion (63%) and was seen on the patient's initial EEG (78%). A unique pattern the authors called "sentinel" discharge was identified in 30% of EEGs in patients with neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis. CONCL …

Hemodynamic responses to visual stimulation in children with sickle cell anemia.

Blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) and cerebral blood flow (CBF)-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) were used to measure primary visual cortex responses to photic stimulation in 23 children (12.4  ±  0.7 years old) with sickle cell anemia (SCA) and 21 clinical controls (11  ±  1.0 years old). The objectives were to investigate the effect of SCA on detection of brain activation with fMRI and to explore the relationship between fMRI responses and global cognitive function. The BOLD responses were diminished in children with SCA. Clinical indicators of disease severity were …
