Immunohistochemical analysis of huntingtin-associated protein 1 in adult rat spinal cord and its regional relationship with androgen receptor.

Huntingtin-associated protein 1 (HAP1) is a neuronal interactor with causatively polyglutamine (polyQ)-expanded huntingtin in Huntington's disease and also associated with pathologically polyQ-expanded androgen receptor (AR) in spinobulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA), being considered as a protective factor against neurodegenerative apoptosis. In normal brains, it is abundantly expressed particularly in the limbic-hypothalamic regions that tend to be spared from neurodegeneration, whereas the areas with little HAP1 expression, including the striatum, thalamus, cerebral neocortex and cerebellum, ar

Schedule-induced polydipsia is associated with increased spine density in dorsolateral striatum neurons.

Schedule-induced polydipsia (SIP) is an adjunctive behavior in which rats exhibit excessive drinking as a consequence of intermittent feeding, and it has been proposed as a candidate model to study the development of compulsive and repetitive behavior. Although several brain structures are involved in compulsive behavior, it has been suggested that alterations in fronto-striatal circuits may underlie compulsive spectrum disorders. In the present work, we examined whether SIP would induce modifications in dorsolateral striatum (DLS) and anterior prefrontal cortex (aPFC) neurons. Specifically, t

Management of a deeply impacted mandibular third molar and associated large dentigerous cyst to avoid nerve injury and improve periodontal healing: case report.

As dentigerous cysts increase in size, the risk of postsurgical complications increases as well. Emphasis is usually placed on the risk of neurologic damage caused by trauma during and after surgical removal and of mandibular fracture resulting from the large residual bone defect. However, influence on the periodontal status of neighbouring teeth should also be taken into account. In this article, we present an interdisciplinary, safe, minimally invasive approach to treating large dentigerous cysts associated with deeply impacted third molars. A dentigerous cyst is an epithelial-lined patholog

Three subdivisions of the auditory midbrain in chicks (Gallus gallus) identified by their afferent and commissural projections.

The auditory midbrain is a site of convergence of multiple auditory channels from the brainstem. In birds, two separate ascending channels have been identified, through which time and intensity information is sent to the nucleus mesencephalicus lateralis, pars dorsalis (MLd), the homologue of the central nucleus of the mammalian inferior colliculus. Using in vivo anterograde and retrograde tracing techniques, the current study provides two lines of anatomical evidence supporting the presence of a third ascending channel to the chick MLd. First, three non-overlapping zones of the MLd receive in

Localization of serotoninergic neurons that participate in regulating diaphragm activity in the cat.

Although a considerable body of literature indicates that serotoninergic neurons affect diaphragm activity both through direct inputs to phrenic motoneurons and multisynaptic connections involving the brainstem respiratory groups, the locations of the serotoninergic neurons that modulate breathing have not been well defined. The present study identified these neurons in cats by combining the transneuronal retrograde transport of rabies virus from the diaphragm with the immunohistochemical detection of the N-terminal region of tryptophan hydroxylase-2 (TPH2), the brain-specific isoform of the e

Scrofuloderma with multiple organ involvement in a 5-year-old child.

Cutaneous tuberculosis is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis seen in children in developing countries. We report a 5-year-old child with cutaneous tuberculosis with involvement of lymph nodes, lungs, and the musculoskeletal and central nervous systems, which was not clinically obvious. Antituberculous treatment led to marked clinical improvement. The importance of a thorough search for internal organ involvement in patients presenting with cutaneous tuberculosis is emphasized.

Direct parasympathetic pathway from midbrain to ciliary muscles in cats and monkeys.

In cats and monkeys, we examined the parasympathetic component of the oculomotor complex, which directly innervates the ciliary muscle, using horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Labeled neurons of varying form and size were found in the Edinger-Westphal(EW) and the Perlia nuclei of the cat and in the anteromedian, EW, and Perlia nuclei of the monkey. Our study confirmed that a direct parasympathetic pathway exists from the midbrain to the ciliary muscles, and that accommodation is controlled in part by this direct link from the midsagittal region via a parasympathetic neuron of the oculomotor nuclea

Potassium usnate, a water-soluble usnic acid salt, shows enhanced activity against Schistosoma mansoni in vitro.

Here, we report enhanced the in vitro effect of potassium usnate on coupled adult Schistosoma mansoni worms at different time intervals and concentrations. The evaluated schistosomicidal parameters were the following: motility, mortality, fecundity and integumentary changes, as viewed in photomicrographs. Potassium usnate was able to cause 100 and 50% mortality at 100 and 50 μM concentrations, respectively, after 24 h of exposure, while 25 and 12.5 μM concentrations caused changes in motility at 48 and 72 h, and lethality at 96 and 120 h respectively. Eggs were not detected at any of the conce

Libman-Sacks Endocarditis Due to Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Activation After Mitral Valve Plasty.

Libman-Sacks endocarditis is a cardiac manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and antiphospholipid syndrome. We report a case of mitral valve destruction due to Libman-Sacks endocarditis, which was caused by activation of SLE, despite prompt initiation of systemic steroid therapy. The prevention of SLE activation is critically important in valve surgery for patients with SLE. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of repaired mitral valve destruction due to activation of SLE, which was caused by valve surgery itself.

Squamous cell carcinoma arising from long-standing perianal fistula.

Perianal fistula is a very common problem in general population. Ninety percent of perianal fistulae arise from infected anal glands, and they often give rise to perianal abscesses. Very rarely perianal fistulae and abscesses undergo malignant transformation and give rise to carcinomas, mainly adenocarcinomas. We are reporting a case of squamous cell carcinoma arising from long-standing perianal fistula and how we managed it surgically.

Fetal hydrocephalus caused by cryptic intraventricular hemorrhage.

Cryptic intracerebral hemorrhage as an etiological factor in fetal hydrocephalus has been postulated but not described at autopsy. Four fetuses with overt hydrocephalus diagnosed by in utero ultrasound examination were examined at autopsy at 19-22 weeks gestation. Although a hemorrhagic etiology was not evident on ultrasound, hemosiderin-containing macrophages and associated reactive changes were found to obstruct the otherwise well-formed cerebral aqueduct in all four. Coagulopathy due to thrombocytopenia was implicated in one case. Anomalies involving other parts of the body were identified

Folliculostellate cell tumor in pituitary gland.

A 33-year-old woman presented with visual field defects. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a pituitary tumor with suprasellar extension. The tumor was partially removed by trans-sphenoidal surgery. Histologically, the tumor was composed of fascicles of spindle cells which were immunohistochemically positive for S-100 protein, Galectin-3, vimentin and EMA. Based on the morphology and immunostaining pattern, diagnosis of folliculostellate cell tumor in the pituitary gland was given.

Myocardial lysis in acute rheumatic fever followed by regeneration of cardiac muscle and origin of Aschoff bodies.

In acute rheumatic heart disease, lysis of cardiac muscle fibres with or without retention of sarcolemma is found to be the most damaging feature in many cases. In deeper myocardium the cellular lysis often forms anastomosing clefts or sinus-like spaces between surviving muscle bundles and in the outer portion of myocardium cellular lysis may leave the sarcolemma more or less intact. From lysing cardiac muscle fibres there arise dedifferentiated cells with remarkable potentiality for regeneration. For the origin of these dedifferentiated cells, which are often indistinguishable from lymphocyte
