Phasic response of the photoperiodic clock to wavelength and intensity of light in the redheaded bunting, Emberiza bruniceps.

We have investigated phasic response of the photoperiodic clock to wavelength (color) and intensity of light in the male redheaded bunting (Emberiza bruniceps). Two experiments were performed. Experiment I examined whether varying the wavelength and intensity of first (entraining, E) and/or second (inducing, I) light pulse will alter the effects of a skeleton photoperiod. Birds were subjected for a period of 6 weeks to skeleton photoschedules (6L:5D:1L:12D; 6 h E-light pulse, 1 h I-light pulse) containing either an E-pulse at 5 or 20 lx coupled with I-pulse at 100 lx, or an E-pulse at 100 lx, …

Photoperiodic regulation of hypothalamic neuropeptide messenger RNA expression: effect of pinealectomy and neuroanatomical location.

Seasonal changes in daylength (photoperiod) affect many aspects of mammalian physiology and behavior, including reproduction, metabolism, thermoregulation, and sleep. The circadian pacemaker in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) regulates these photoperiodic changes. Our studies of the Siberian hamster SCN have shown that two types of neuropeptide-containing neurons, vasopressin (AVP) and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) neurons, respond to short photoperiod by decreasing mRNA expression. The present studies investigated whether photoperiodic inhibition of mRNA expression also oc…

The photoperiodic response in Syrian hamsters depends upon a melatonin-driven rhythm of sensitivity to melatonin.

The pineal gland conveys photoperiodic information to the brain through its daily pattern of melatonin (MEL) secretion. The duration of MEL secretion is proportional to the duration of the night. To determine the mechanism by which MEL transduces photoperiod, we used a protocol of daily MEL infusion given to sexually active pinealectomized Syrian hamsters. A long MEL signal (10 h) inhibited sexual activity, whereas a 5-hour infusion had no effect. However, animals given a 2.5-hour infusion twice separated by an interval of 3 h produced complete gonadal atrophy. Changes in the time interval bet…

Plasma melatonin in the horse: measurements in natural photoperiod and in acutely extended darkness throughout the year.

Plasma melatonin was measured at the winter and summer solstices and the autumn and spring equinoxes in four mares held under natural condit … ason melatonin secretion commenced earlier and decreased later than that measured under the natural photoperiodic condition, suggesting that the expression of the melatonin rhythm is normally gated by natural environmental light both at dusk and dawn. The interval from the onset of melatonin measured under acutely extended darkness to the time of sunset was g …

Photoperiodic synchronization of a circannual reproductive rhythm in sheep: identification of season-specific time cues.

Seasonal reproduction in the ewe is generated by an endogenous circannual rhythm of reproductive neuroendocrine activity. Exposure to as few as 70 days of photoperiodic information a year is sufficient to synchronize the rhythm. The present study was conducted to identify which portions of the photoperiodic cycle are utilized for synchronization. For this purpose, we used pinealectomized ewes that could not respond reproductively to changes in day length. Selected photoperiodic information was provided via infusion of melatonin, a hormone that provides the neuroendocrine code for day length in…

Entrainment of the circadian rhythm in the rat pineal N-acetyltransferase activity by melatonin is photoperiod dependent.

Entraining effect of melatonin on the circadian rhythm in rat pineal N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity was studied under various photoperiods. Melatonin administration prior to dark onset for 5 successive days phase-advanced the evening NAT rise under the light:dark (LD) cycle of either LD 10:14 or LD 8:16, but not under LD 12:12. It is assumed that under the latter regime, the end of a light period exhibited a phase-delaying effect on the NAT rise. The light exposure appeared to be a stronger Zeitgeber than melatonin itself. Data show that melatonin applied in the late light period advances …

Pineal and photoperiodic influences on fat deposition, pelage, and testicular activity in male meadow voles.

Pinealectomy completely prevented gonadal regression as well as reduction in body weight and white adipose tissue content of the gonadal and retroperitoneal fat deposits in male meadow voles transferred from long to short day lengths. Pineal influences on pelage characteristics depended on which parameter was assessed. For instance, the increase in guard hair length observed in short-day control voles was blocked by pinealectomy; however, a similar increase in underhair length was unaffected by removal of the pineal gland. Photoperiod-dependent changes in fat deposition, testicular activity, a…

The Oviposition Site Selection and Photoperiod Regulation of Megalurothrips usitatus (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in Different Cowpea Plant Parts.

Megalurothrips usitatus (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is a key destructive pest of cowpea, resulting in considerable economic losses. Understanding M. usitatus's oviposition preference in various plant parts under distinct photoperiod treatments is important for its success in pest control. We placed mated females with cowpea stems, leaves and pods in rearing boxes. After 24 h, eggs were counted after basic fuchsin staining. Hatched nymphs were recorded over 7 days. Morphology and histology were examined by microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. A statistical comparison on the number of egg-…

Effects of photoperiod on growth performance, body composition and antioxidant capacity of fat greenling juvenile Hexagrammos otakii.

As one of the major environmental factors, photoperiod plays an important role in factory aquaculture systems, and the effects of photoperiod on organism performance appear to be species specific. To determine a suitable light photoperiod that optimizes production efficiency, the effects of three commonly used photoperiods 12L (12 h light):12D (12 h dark), 24L and 24D on body composition and antioxidant capacity of juvenile fat greenling Hexagrammos otakii were assessed. The initial weight of the fish in this feeding test was 11.07 ± 0.16 g, and the trial lasted for 30 days. The effects of the…

Influence of photoperiod and exogenous melatonin on testis morpho-physiology of sexually mature guinea fowl (Numida meleagris).

The biological effects of simulated photoperiod and melatonin on the control of reproduction of guinea fowls (Numida meleagris) are not well understood. Herein, thirty (30) sexually mature guinea fowl cocks were randomly assigned to 1-6 groups (n = 5) and subjected to different photoperiodic regimes in the presence or absence of exogenous melatonin (Mel; 1 mg/kgBW/day, i/m) for eight weeks. Testes of the euthanized cocks were processed for gross morphology, histological, histochemical, and oxidative stress markers. Testosterone concentration was determined in serum samples using the enzyme-lin…

Short photoperiod inhibition of growth in body mass and reproduction in ACI, BUF, and PVG inbred rats.

Laboratory rats have been generally considered non-photoresponsive, but strains of laboratory rats have been found to be variable for this trait. Young males of both the Fischer (F344) and Brown Norway strains (BN) suppress reproductive development, food intake and body mass in short winter photoperiod (short days (SD); 8 h light:16 h darkness), and food restriction interacts with SD to enhance the effect of SD alone. Conversely, young male Harlan Sprague Dawley outbred rats, along with other outbred laboratory rats tested, have little or no response to SD except when unmasked by food restrict…

Effect of photoperiod on testicular function in blinded and non-blinded marbled newts, Triturus marmoratus (caudata, salamandridae).

Adult male marbled newts (Triturus marmoratus) were collected at the beginning of the spermatogenetic period and exposed to different photoperiods (natural photoperiod with progressively increasing daylengths, total darkness, 8L:16D, 12L:12D, 16L:8D, and continuous light) for 3 months at 20°C. To evaluate the effect of photoperiodic input via pineal gland photoreceptors, two additional groups of newts were blinded by a non-aggressive method (an elastic rubber cap was adjusted to the head to cover the eyes but not the pineal photoreceptors). These animals were exposed either to the natural phot…

Pineal lysosomal enzymes in the Syrian hamster: circadian rhythm and effects of castration or short photoperiod treatment.

A circadian rhythm in acid phosphatase and hexosaminidase was found in adult male hamsters exposed to a long photoperiod (14:10 h light/dark [LD]; lights on 06.00 h) and killed at 08.00, 14.00, 20.00, 02.00, 04.00, 05.50 and 0.615 h. Hexosaminidase and beta-glucuronidase activity at 02.00, 04.00 and 05.50 h (values pooled for these times before lights on) were significantly elevated compared to enzyme activity at 06.15 and 08.00 h (pooled values after lights on), suggesting a fall in activity associated with lights on. Hypogonadism was induced in female Syrian hamsters by exposure to a short p…

Estrus, ovulation, and serum progesterone, estradiol, and LH concentrations in mares after an increased photoperiod during winter.

On December 11, 1974, 15 seasonally anestrous mares were assigned at random to 1 of 3 experimental groups: outdoor-control, indoor-control, or indoor light-treated (a 16-hour photo-period). This experiment was terminated on April 21, 1975. The five mares in the indoor light-treated group ovulated 59.0+/-6.9 days later, which was 74 days earlier (P less than 0.01) than 2 of the 5 outdoor-controls (the other 3 ovulated after April 21 during a subsequent experiment) and 50 days earlier (P less than 0.05) than the indoor-controls. Durations of the 1st estrus for the 3 groups of mares were 13.3+/-3

Spatiotemporal remodeling of bone as a reversibly adaptive biological material in Djungarian hamsters under regulated photoperiod conditions.

Bone loss in humans is typically progressive and difficult to reverse, posing challenges for both pharmacological therapy and the long-term performance of bone replacement materials. Photoperiod-sensitive species such as the Djungarian hamster undergo cyclical physiological adaptations in response to seasonal light cues, providing a unique framework to investigate bone adaptation during physiologically regulated phases of bone loss under endocrine and circadian control without surgical or pharmacological intervention. Female Djungarian hamsters were maintained under long-day (LD) or short-day …

Optimizing LED Light Intensity and Photoperiod to Promote Growth and Rooting of Medicinal Cannabis in Photoautotrophic Micropropagation.

Conventional micropropagation of cannabis struggles with excessive callus hyperhydration, slow growth, low rooting efficiency, and high contamination risk, all of which greatly restrict its feasibility for large-scale propagation. In contrast, photoautotrophic micropropagation (PAM) has emerged as an efficient and cost-effective propagation strategy that can significantly enhance plantlet growth and improve seedling quality by optimizing the LED lighting environment. This study investigated the effects of four light intensities (50, 100, 150, and 200 µmol m-2 s-1) and three photoperiods (16, 2…

cba-miR-222-3p involved in photoperiod-induced apoptosis in testes of striped hamsters by targeting TRAF7.

The role of miRNAs in the regulation of seasonal reproduction in rodents, particularly in relation to photoperiod changes, is still poorly understood. Previous studies on miRNA transcriptomes of striped hamster (Cricetulus barabensis) testes have indicated that the photoperiodism of testes, especially apoptosis, may be influenced by miRNAs. As a functional miRNA, cba-miR-222-3p in striped hamster testes exhibits suppression under a short photoperiod. To elucidate the potential role of testicular cba-miR-222-3p in the seasonal reproduction of striped hamsters, we exposed male striped hamsters t…
