Child physical abuse and self-perceived social isolation among adolescents.

This research examines the connection between physical abuse and social isolation. Using data from the National Youth Survey, a measure of self-perceived social isolation was constructed indicating the extent to which respondents feel detached from their friends and from school. Those who had experienced violence were predicted to be more isolated than those who had not. Results strongly supported the hypothesis, controlling for theoretically relevant variables. Explanation is provided in terms of damage to attachment skills, social competence, and self-esteem concomitant to being a victim of

Occult head trauma in young suspected victims of physical abuse.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency of neuroimaging and ophthalmology consults in children evaluated for physical abuse without neurologic symptoms and the diagnostic yield of these studies. STUDY DESIGN: Records of neurologically asymptomatic patients younger than 48 months evaluated with a skeletal survey at two academic medical centers were reviewed for frequency of CT or MRI and ophthalmology consults, the results of these tests, and factors associated with given evaluations. Factors associated with positive findings during evaluation were also analyzed. RESULTS: Fifty-one patients ha

Skin scraping, cupping, and moxibustion that may mimic physical abuse.

Physical abuse and child abuse can manifest themselves as many different appearances. However, there are some cultural practices of Oriental medicine that may mimic physical and/or child abuse. This paper will discuss the practice of skin scraping, cupping, and moxibustion, which has been misdiagnosed as physical/child abuse by unfamiliar examiners.

Prevalence of childhood physical abuse in adult male veteran alcoholics.

Although past research has identified psychological and behavioral consequences for adults who were abused as children, few studies have examined the incidence and consequences of childhood physical abuse among adult alcoholics. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of a childhood history of physical abuse in adult male alcoholics and to determine what differences may exist in the psychological profile and patterns of alcohol abuse in abused and nonabused alcoholics. The study sample was comprised of 100 male alcoholic inpatients from the alcoholism treatment unit at a metropo

Abuse is not a zero-sum game! The case for zero tolerance of match official physical and verbal abuse.

Emergent research has investigated the impact of abuse on the decision of match officials to leave their sport. The existing literature is largely descriptive and qualitative. Based on large surveys of football referees in France and the Netherlands, this paper investigates the factors that are associated with the verbal and physical abuse of the referees and also the association of this abuse with the intentions of referees to quit officiating. The associations are investigated by estimating the marginal effects from bivariate probit and probit models respectively. Bivariate probit estimation

Relationship of abuse by religious authorities to depression, religiosity, and child physical abuse history in a college sample.

OBJECTIVE: Discussion of sexual abuse by religious authorities has been plagued by allegations of false memories and misreports, often attributed to media attention. An analysis of a historical archive with information on abuse by religious and other authority figures and coexisting psychopathology is extremely useful to the current debate on outcomes of sexual abuse. METHOD: The present study utilizes a database from the late 1970s that contains data on physical abuse and sexual abuse by various perpetrator types as well as on symptoms of depression, anxiety, and religiosity in a college pop

The influence of childhood sexual abuse, physical abuse, family environment, and gender on the psychological adjustment of adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of the current study was to examine the contributions of sexual abuse, physical abuse, family cohesion, and conflict in predicting the psychological functioning of adolescents. Additional analyses were conducted to determine whether adolescent victims of child sexual abuse and physical abuse perceive their family environments as more conflictual and less cohesive than nonabused adolescents. METHOD: Participants were 131 male and female adolescents, ages 16 years to 18 years, receiving services at a residential vocational training program. Participants completed well

[Familial alcohol abuse in the context of sexual and physical abuse offenses by male adolescents and young adults].

This study investigated whether and to what extent defined samples of young male offenders (sexual and assault offences) differ with regard to the effects of alcohol abuse in their families. Thirty-eight young men had sexually assaulted women of their own age or older, 36 subjects had sexually abused children and 33 had committed assault offences. The incidence of alcohol abuse of mothers was the same in all groups. The alcohol abuse of fathers was most common in the group of assault offences and least common in the group of sexual offences against women of the same age or older. In contrast,

ACR Appropriateness Criteria® Suspected Physical Abuse-Child: Update 2025.

For suspected physical abuse in infants and toddlers (<24 months), a radiographic skeletal survey and noncontrast head CT are usually appropriate first-line imaging, even if no injuries are apparent. These studies often reveal occult fractures or intracranial hemorrhages. For children >24 months without neurologic or visceral signs of injury, imaging is more targeted: radiographs of areas of concern are obtained, and skeletal surveys are used selectively, reflecting the lower yield of occult injuries in this older group. Neurologic symptoms or signs of head trauma warrant immediate neuroimagin

Early childhood risk of physical abuse with isolated subconjunctival hemorrhages.

BACKGROUND: While subconjunctival hemorrhages (SCHs) have been suggested by some to be sentinel injuries which should prompt further evaluation for abuse, the risk of abuse in children with isolated SCHs is not currently known. OBJECTIVE: To determine if infants and young children with isolated SCHs have current or subsequent concerns for physical abuse. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Children 1 to <48 months old with SCHs diagnosed between 2011 and 2015 within a large, integrated healthcare system were included and followed until their fifth birthdays. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study. Child

Prolonged Infant Crying: Caregiving Quality and Child Physical Abuse Risk.

Research suggests that prolonged infant crying may increase risk for child physical abuse (CPA). However, few studies have examined behavioral responses to infant crying among parents at risk for CPA. The present study sought to fill this gap by using a simulated infant to examine how mothers and fathers with varying degrees of CPA risk respond to prolonged infant crying. Specifically, a sample of 184 general population caregivers (107 mothers and 77 fathers) participated in a task that involved attempting to soothe a simulated infant that cried continuously for 30 min. The simulated infant se

Emerging Trends in Smartphone Photo Documentation of Child Physical Abuse.

Photo documentation of injuries on children is universally recommended in cases of suspected child physical abuse. As technology improves, the ability to document physical examination findings through smartphone photography is increasingly accessible and practical. The quality of images captured on smartphones now rivals traditional photography and the integration of photo capture within the electronic medical record has led to a variety of fields adopting smartphone photo documentation for diagnosis, consult, and follow-up. However, in cases of child physical abuse, practitioners have been he

Factors influencing the perceived credibility of children alleging physical abuse.

Adults' assessments of the credibility of children's reports are affected by factors including the frequency of abuse, reporting delays and the child's age. The present study examined whether similar factors affect the perceived credibility of children reporting physical abuse, which is more common than sexual abuse. Two hundred and eight mock jurors read a simulated transcript of a child reporting physical abuse to police and made credibility ratings. Within each transcript, abuse frequency (once, repeated), reporting timing (recent, delayed), police question type (open, closed) and child age

Child health care coverage and reductions in child physical abuse.

Children in the United States suffered almost 118,000 cases of physical abuse in 2015. One factor that might help decrease child physical abuse is health care coverage. This paper presents a justification for a link between health care coverage and reductions in child physical abuse and, though it does not assess specific causal mechanisms, examines evidence for such a connection. The paper uses panel data linear regression analysis to explore state level physical abuse and health care coverage rates. Findings indicate a statistically significant relationship between increases in child health

Child Physical Abuse, Non-anemic Iron Deficiency and Behavior Problems.

PURPOSE: Child abuse is regarded as a life-course social determinant of health problems. However, little is known about the nutritional status of physically abused children and their cumulative effect on child behavior. The present study aimed to examine the non-anemic iron deficiency status of abused children and the combined effect of physical abuse and non-anemic iron deficiency on child behavior in China. METHODS: This cross-sectional study comprised 314 children aged 11-14 (12.30±0.57) years old from Jintan, China. Children self-reported their physical abuse experiences and behavior prob

Is childhood physical abuse associated with anxiety disorders among adults?

Several studies have examined the association between childhood physical abuse (CPA) and anxiety disorders with inconsistent results. In order to help clarify this relationship, we investigated the association between CPA and current anxiety disorders while controlling for the following groups of factors: (1) demographics; (2) family background; (3) current socioeconomic status (SES); (4) current stressors; and (5) current mood disorders. Data from the 2005 Canadian Community Health Survey were analyzed. The sample included 12,481 respondents from the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Saskatc

Child physical abuse and adult mental health: a national study.

This study characterizes adults who report being physically abused during childhood, and examines associations of reported type and frequency of abuse with adult mental health. Data were derived from the 2000-2001 and 2004-2005 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, a large cross-sectional survey of a representative sample (N = 43,093) of the U.S. population. Weighted means, frequencies, and odds ratios of sociodemographic correlates and prevalence of psychiatric disorders were computed. Logistic regression models were used to examine the strength of associations betw
