Does the tinnitus pitch correlate with the frequency of hearing loss?

BACKGROUND: The tonotopic model of tinnitus claims that the tinnitus pitch corresponds to the audiometric edge; the homeostatic model suggests that it falls within the hearing loss (HL) area. The existing evidence mostly supports the homeostatic model, but the relationship between the tinnitus pitch and the HL frequencies has been insufficiently explored. AIMS/OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between the tinnitus pitch and the audiometric profile in the largest study population to date. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hundred and ninety-three patients with tonal or narrow-band tinnitus

[Cognitive rehabilitation of amusia].

INTRODUCTION: The cognitive model of music processing has a modular architecture with two main pathways (a melody pathway and a time pathway) for processing the musical "message" and thus enabling music recognition. It also features a music-specific module for tonal encoding of pitch which stands apart from all other known cognitive systems (including language processing). To the best of our knowledge, rehabilitation therapy for amusia has not yet been reported. OBJECTIVE: We developed a therapeutic method (inspired by work on word deafness) in order to determine whether specific rehabilitati

Anesthesia changes frequency tuning of neurons in the rat primary auditory cortex.

The vast majority of investigations on central auditory processing so far were conducted under the influence of an anesthetic agent. It remains unclear, however, to what extend even basic response properties of central auditory neurons are influenced by this experimental manipulation. We used a combination of chronic recording in unrestrained animals, computer-controlled randomized acoustic stimulation, and statistical evaluation of responses to directly compare the response characteristics of single neurons in the awake and anesthetized state. Thereby we were able to quantify the effects of p

[Value of in situ measurement for evaluating effective hearing aid amplification at high sound pressure levels].

A careful hearing aid fitting requires consideration of various characteristics of inner ear pathology. The recruitment phenomenon restricts the dynamic range of the impaired hearing and this increase the demands on the hearing aids for a satisfactory correction of the frequency characteristics as well as for an intensity reduction at higher sound pressure level SPL. For years data from coupler or KEMAR (Knowles Electronics Manikin of Acoustical Research) have served to estimate the real ear gain of a hearing aid at higher input levels. In previous papers we reported on some of the differences

Exploring the role of auditory analysis in atypical compared to typical language development.

The relationship between auditory processing and language skills has been debated for decades. Previous findings have been inconsistent, both in typically developing and impaired subjects, including those with dyslexia or specific language impairment. Whether correlations between auditory and language skills are consistent between different populations has hardly been addressed at all. The present work presents an exploratory approach of testing for patterns of correlations in a range of measures of auditory processing. In a recent study, we reported findings from a large cohort of eleven-year

Is vestibular self-motion perception controlled by the velocity storage? Insights from patients with chronic degeneration of the vestibulo-cerebellum.

BACKGROUND: The rotational vestibulo-ocular reflex (rVOR) generates compensatory eye movements in response to rotational head accelerations. The velocity-storage mechanism (VSM), which is controlled by the vestibulo-cerebellar nodulus and uvula, determines the rVOR time constant. In healthy subjects, it has been suggested that self-motion perception in response to earth-vertical axis rotations depends on the VSM in a similar way as reflexive eye movements. We aimed at further investigating this hypothesis and speculated that if the rVOR and rotational self-motion perception share a common VSM,

Revisiting the "enigma" of musicians with dyslexia: Auditory sequencing and speech abilities.

Previous research has suggested a link between musical training and auditory processing skills. Musicians have shown enhanced perception of auditory features critical to both music and speech, suggesting that this link extends beyond basic auditory processing. It remains unclear to what extent musicians who also have dyslexia show these specialized abilities, considering often-observed persistent deficits that coincide with reading impairments. The present study evaluated auditory sequencing and speech discrimination in 52 adults comprised of musicians with dyslexia, nonmusicians with dyslexia

Measuring the apparent width of auditory sources in normal and impaired hearing.

It is often assumed that single sources of sound are perceived as being punctate, but this cannot be guaranteed, especially for hearing-impaired listeners. Any impairment that gives a reduction at the periphery in the accuracy of coding fine-scale temporal information must give a slight interaural jitter in the temporal information passed to higher centres, and so would be expected to lead to an effective reduction in the interaural coherence (IC) of any stimulus. This would lead to deficits in locating sounds, but deficits of imprecision, not inaccuracy. In turn, this implies that older heari

Temporal predictions based on a gradual change in tempo.

Previous studies investigating sensitivity to step changes in tempo and prediction of tone onset time have generally utilized isochronous sequences. This study investigates subjects' ability to detect deviations from a gradual change in the tempo of a tone sequence (experiment 1) and their judgment of the perceptually optimal timing of this tone (experiment 2). In experiment 1, inter-onset-intervals within pairs of eight-tone sequences followed a geometric progression to create a gradual tempo change. In one sequence, the final tone was presented either earlier or later than specified by the p

Dissociable neuronal mechanism for different crossmodal correspondence effects in humans.

Crossmodal correspondences (CMCs) refer to associations between seemingly arbitrary stimulus features in different sensory modalities. Pitch‑size correspondences refer to the strong association of e.g., small objects with high pitches. Pitch‑elevation correspondences refer to the strong association of e.g., visuospatial elevated objects with high pitches. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study the neural components, which underlie the CMCs in pitch‑size and spatial pitch‑elevation. This study focuses on answering the question of whether or not different CMCs are driven b

Evidence of both brainstem and auditory cortex involvement in categorical perception for Chinese lexical tones.

The categorical perception of lexical tones is important to understand tonal languages. Recent studies have provided electrophysiological evidence for the categorical perception of lexical tones at the cortical level; however, whether neural correlates exist at subcortical levels remain unknown. In this study, by using across-category and within-category lexical tone contrasts with the equivalent physical interval, we recorded deviance detection activities at both the brainstem (reflected by frequency following response) and cortical levels (reflected by mismatch negativity) simultaneously. We

Mirrored brain organization: Statistical anomaly or reversal of hemispheric functional segregation bias?

Humans demonstrate a prototypical hemispheric functional segregation pattern, with language and praxis lateralizing to the left hemisphere and spatial attention, face recognition, and emotional prosody to the right hemisphere. In this study, we used fMRI to determine laterality for all five functions in each participant. Crucially, we recruited a sample of left-handers preselected for atypical (right) language dominance (n = 24), which allowed us to characterize hemispheric asymmetry of the other functions and compare their functional segregation pattern with that of left-handers showing typic

Neural Integration of Stimulus History Underlies Prediction for Naturalistically Evolving Sequences.

Forming valid predictions about the environment is crucial to survival. However, whether humans are able to form valid predictions about natural stimuli based on their temporal statistical regularities remains unknown. Here, we presented subjects with tone sequences with pitch fluctuations that, over time, capture long-range temporal dependence structures prevalent in natural stimuli. We found that subjects were able to exploit such naturalistic statistical regularities to make valid predictions about upcoming items in a sequence. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings revealed that slow, arr

Acoustic analysis of musical intervals in modern Byzantine Chant scales.

The goal of this work is to investigate experimentally the music intervals in modern Byzantine Chant performance and to compare the obtained results with the equal temperament scales introduced by the Patriarchal Music Committee (PMC). Current measurements resulted from pressure and electroglottographic recordings of 13 famous chanters singing scales of all the music genera. The scales' microintervals were derived after pitch detection based on autocorrelation, cepstrum, and harmonic product spectrum analysis. The microintervallic differences between the experimental values and the PMC's ones

Brainstem correlates of concurrent speech identification in adverse listening conditions.

When two voices compete, listeners can segregate and identify concurrent speech sounds using pitch (fundamental frequency, F0) and timbre (harmonic) cues. Speech perception is also hindered by the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). How clear and degraded concurrent speech sounds are represented at early, pre-attentive stages of the auditory system is not well understood. To this end, we measured scalp-recorded frequency-following responses (FFR) from the EEG while human listeners heard two concurrently presented, steady-state (time-invariant) vowels whose F0 differed by zero or four semitones (ST) p

Infants' responsiveness to the auditory and visual attributes of a sounding/moving stimulus.

Responses to unimodal and multimodal attributes of a compound auditory/visual stimulus were investigated in 4-, 6-, 8-, and 10-month-old infants. First, infants were habituated to a compound stimulus consisting of a visual stimulus that moved up and down on a video monitor and a sound that occurred each time the visual stimulus reversed direction at the bottom. Once each infant met a habituation criterion, a series of test trials was administered to assess responsiveness to the components of the compound stimulus. Response was defined as the total duration of visual fixation in each trial. In

Auditory discrimination training for tinnitus treatment: the effect of different paradigms.

Acoustic deprivation, i.e. hearing loss, is responsible for a cascade of processes resulting in reorganisation of the cortex. Tinnitus mechanisms are explained by synchronization of the neural spontaneous activity and might be related to cortical re-mapping. Auditory discrimination training (ADT) has demonstrated in both animals and humans to induce tonotopical changes in the auditory pathways through neural plasticity. We hypothesize that ADT could have some effect on tinnitus perception. The objective of this study is to compare the effect on tinnitus following two paradigms of ADT. Only pat

Cortical processing of discrete prosodic patterns in continuous speech.

Prosody has a vital function in speech, structuring a speaker's intended message for the listener. The superior temporal gyrus (STG) is considered a critical hub for prosody, but the role of earlier auditory regions like Heschl's gyrus (HG), associated with pitch processing, remains unclear. Using intracerebral recordings in humans and non-human primate models, we investigated prosody processing in narrative speech, focusing on pitch accents-abstract phonological units that signal word prominence and communicative intent. In humans, HG encoded pitch accents as abstract representations beyond s

Early auditory responses to speech sounds in Parkinson's disease: preliminary data.

Parkinson's disease (PD), as a manifestation of basal ganglia dysfunction, is associated with a number of speech deficits, including reduced voice modulation and vocal output. Interestingly, previous work has shown that participants with PD show an increased feedback-driven motor response to unexpected fundamental frequency perturbations during speech production, and a heightened ability to detect differences in vocal pitch relative to control participants. Here, we explored one possible contributor to these enhanced responses. We recorded the frequency-following auditory brainstem response (F

A distributed dynamic brain network mediates linguistic tone representation and categorization.

Successful categorization requires listeners to represent the incoming sensory information, resolve the "blooming, buzzing confusion" inherent to noisy sensory signals, and leverage the accumulated evidence towards making a decision. Despite decades of intense debate, the neural systems underlying speech categorization remain unresolved. Here we assessed the neural representation and categorization of lexical tones by native Mandarin speakers (N = 31) across a range of acoustic and contextual variabilities (talkers, perceptual saliences, and stimulus-contexts) using functional magnetic imaging
