Placental mesenchymal dysplasia is a rare human placental disorder in which the placenta is enlarged and contains cystic villi and dilated vasculature. It is important to recognize this disorder because it may mimic a partial hydatidiform mole. In contrast to a partial mole, mesenchymal dysplasia may coexist with a normal fetus. This case occurred at the Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, in June 2002.

We report six cases of chronic intervillositis, an infrequently recognized placental lesion that is characterized by a prominent mononuclear inflammatory cell infiltrate in the intervillous space and that is associated with poor fetal outcome. In all six placentas, the inflammatory infiltrate was essentially limited to the intervillous space: chronic villitis was present focally only in one and absent in the other five. Additional placental histopathologic findings included increased villous fibrinoid material in all six, infarcts in two, atherosis in decidual vessels in two, and acute chorioa…

It is proposed that prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), secreted by the fetal placenta of the sheep, acts as a circulating regulator of the physiological function of many fetal organs (tissue) in a way analogous to catecholamines in the adult. The specificity of PGE2 action in different tissues is determined by three different receptor subtypes which regulate intracellular calcium concentrations via the IP3 pathway, or cyclic AMP concentrations via the adenylcyclase system. The placenta, by secreting PGE2 (and possibly other factors such as adenosine), modifies the function of key organ systems allowing …

A unique primary placental tumor, designated "hepatocellular adenoma of the placenta," is reported. The tumor was composed of cells resembling fetal hepatocytes. The hepatocellular nature of the tumor cells was supported by ultrastructural and immunohistochemical findings. Histogenetically, this tumor most likely represents a highly specialized monodermal teratoma.

In this study, the ultrastructure of the human placental 'nematosome' or 'glomerular body' is described. It is usually found as electron-dense aggregates forming an inclusion 0.3 to 0.5 micron in diameter and of variable length, and occurs within cytotrophoblast cells in different configurations which include spirals, concentric rings, parallel arrays, random coils and paracrystalline structures. Analysis of random electron micrographs of placentae from normal and complicated pregnancies showed that the nematosome is present in low frequencies in the first and second trimesters but is more com…

It is necessary to examine the placenta in two conditions at least: when the fetus is still born or dies in the neonatal period, and when there is a gestational or a neonatal pathology. Placental examination is essentially macroscopic. It is recommended to practice it on fresh placenta, so that cytobacteriological investigation can be done at the same time. Histological samples are taken in one third of the cases. The principal abnormalities or lesions are described, with their clinical significance: shape abnormalities, pathology of the cord and membranes, vascular lesions (decidual haematoma…
