Cannabis sativa L. is an annual herb oldest cultivated plants as a source of fiber since about 5000 B.C. On the other hand, the cannabis flower and seed are listed in Shennong's classic Materia Medica approximately 2000 years ago. The formulas prescribed with cannabis in Kampo medicine have been summarized. Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the major neurological and psychiatric cannabinoids, and develop to drugs. It becomes evident that the therapeutic CBD and/or THC are the important candidate of anti-dementia drugs having different mechanism for Alzheimer's patients. Two

Polyploid breeding techniques aid in the cultivation of new forestry cultivars, thus expanding the suite of strategies for the improvement of arboreal traits and innovation within the field of forestry. Compared to diploid Robinia pseudoacacia L. (black locust) 'D26-5①' (2×), its dwarfed homologous tetraploid 'D26-5②' (4×) variety has better application prospects in garden vegetation guardrails and urban landscape. However, the molecular mechanism of the generation and growth of this dwarf variety is still unclear. Here, plant growth and development as well as histological differences between

Modern agriculture needs large quantities of phosphate (Pi) fertilisers to obtain high yields. Information on how plants sense and adapt to Pi is required to enhance phosphorus-use efficiency (PUE) and thereby promote agricultural sustainability. Here, we show that strigolactones (SLs) regulate rice root developmental and metabolic adaptations to low Pi, by promoting efficient Pi uptake and translocation from roots to shoots. Low Pi stress triggers the synthesis of SLs, which dissociate the Pi central signalling module of SPX domain-containing protein (SPX4) and PHOSPHATE STARVATION RESPONSE p

Iron (Fe) disorder is a pivotal factor that limits rice yields in many parts of the world. Extensive research has been devoted to studying how rice molecularly copes with the stresses of Fe deficiency or excess. However, a comprehensive dissection of the whole Fe-responsive atlas at the protein level is still lacking. Here, different concentrations of Fe (0, 40, 350, and 500 μM) were supplied to rice to demonstrate its response differences to Fe deficiency and excess via physiological and proteomic analysis. Results showed that compared with the normal condition, the seedling growth and conten

Breeding for dwarfism is an important approach to improve lodging resistance. Here, we performed comparative analysis of the phenotype, transcriptome, and hormone contents between diploids and tetraploids of poplar 84K (Populus alba × P. glandulosa). Compared with diploids, the indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and gibberellin (GA3) contents were increased, whereas the jasmonic acid (JA) and abscisic acid (ABA) contents were decreased in tetraploids. RNA-sequencing revealed that differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in leaves of tetraploids were mainly involved in plant hormone pathways. Most DEGs as

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] is one of the most important crops globally. Researchers have focused on enhancing soybean through genetic modification, leading to an extensive accumulation of publications and patents. Despite this, a comprehensive exploration of this information in breeding research has been lacking. Using data from the Web of Science (WoS) and Orbit Intelligence databases (2013-2023), this study employs the Bibliometrix package in R and Gephi for visual analysis. We examined keywords, co-occurrences, collaborations, and emerging trends to shed light on future research and i

Microspore culture is one of the doubled-haploid-producing techniques that can speed up the breeding process and shorten the time for releasing new cultivars. Growing world population and changing climate demand to expedite the development of new resilient and high-yielding cultivars for staple crops such as bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Here, we describe a comprehensive protocol for obtaining bread wheat doubled haploids through microspore culture. Key steps including donor plant growth and spike pretreatment, microspore isolation and density-gradient-based purification, microspore-ovar

Apomixis (asexual reproduction via seeds) has the potential to revolutionize sunflower breeding. In previous studies, we identified a diploid sunflower line (Rf975) that naturally exhibits extra gametophytes resembling aposporous apomictic embryo sacs (AES). Here, we investigated the nature (reduced vs. unreduced) and viability of these AES-like gametophytes by examining the formation of triploid (3x) BIII hybrids (2n + n) in the progeny of Rf975. Flow cytometry analysis of immature seeds revealed that, on average, 42.8% of self-pollinated Rf975 progeny were triploids, although only 36.6% of t

Thermosensitive genic female sterility (TGFS) is a promising property to be utilized for hybrid breeding. Here, we identified a rice TGFS line, tfs2, through an ethyl methyl sulfone (EMS) mutagenesis strategy. This line showed sterility under high temperature and became fertile under low temperature. Few seeds were produced when the tfs2 stigma was pollinated, indicating that tfs2 is female sterile. Gene cloning and genetic complementation showed that a point mutation from leucine to phenylalanine in HEI10 (HEI10tfs2), a crossover formation protein, caused the TGFS trait of tfs2. Under high te

The traditional rice genotypes of Assam are considered to have biological value due to the presence of several bioactive compounds like flavonoids, polyphenols, and anthocyanins, which have antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, and anti-aging properties. The pigmented genotypes are considered to have high iron (Fe) content. However, the effect of Fe and Zinc (Zn) accumulation on anthocyanin content is yet to be studied in pigmented rice of Assam. We studied the Fe, Zn, and anthocyanin content in grains of 204 traditional rice of Assam, which are traditionally preferred for their nutraceutic

Barley, a vital cereal crop worldwide, is hindered by hordeins, gluten proteins triggering adverse reactions in those with celiac disease (CeD) and non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). Recent barley breeding advancements focus on creating varieties with reduced hordein content. Researchers have developed ultra-low gluten barley mutants via targeted genetic modifications, showing significantly decreased hordein levels, potentially safe for CeD and NCGS individuals. However, some mutants carry undesirable traits, which are addressed through further breeding and new genomic techniques. These inn

Insects have adapted to a multitude of environmental conditions, including the presence of xenobiotic noxious substances. Environmental microorganisms, particularly rich on ephemeral resources, employ these noxious chemicals in a chemical warfare against predators and competitors, driving co-evolutionary adaptations. In order to analyse how environmental microbes may be driving such evolutionary adaptations, we experimentally evolved Drosophila melanogaster populations by exposing larvae to the toxin-producing mould Aspergillus nidulans that infests the flies' breeding substrate. To disentangl

Developing climate-resilient crops is critical for future food security and sustainable agriculture under current climate scenarios. Of specific importance are drought and soil salinity. Tolerance traits to these stresses are highly complex, and the progress in improving crop tolerance is too slow to cope with the growing demand in food production unless a major paradigm shift in crop breeding occurs. In this work, we combined bioinformatics and physiological approaches to compare some of the key traits that may differentiate between xerophytes (naturally drought-tolerant plants) and mesophyte

BACKGROUND: Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench) is a promising target for pro-vitamin A biofortification as it is a global staple crop, particularly in regions where vitamin A deficiency is prevalent. As with most cereal grains, carotenoid concentrations are low in sorghum, and breeding could be a feasible strategy to increase pro-vitamin A carotenoids to biologically relevant concentrations. However, there are knowledge gaps in the biosynthesis and regulation of sorghum grain carotenoids, which can limit breeding effectiveness. The aim of this research was to gain an understanding of the tr

BACKGROUND: As the largest substantive organ of animals, the liver plays an essential role in the physiological processes of digestive metabolism and immune defense. However, the cellular composition of the pig liver remains poorly understood. This investigation used single-nucleus RNA sequencing technology to identify cell types from liver tissues of pigs, providing a theoretical basis for further investigating liver cell types in pigs.
RESULTS: The analysis revealed 13 cells clusters which were further identified 7 cell types including endothelial cells, T cells, hepatocytes, Kupffer cells,

In recent years, petal blight disease caused by pathogens has become increasingly epidemic in Rhododendron. Breeding disease-resistant rhododendron is considered to be a more environmentally friendly strategy than is the use of chemical reagents. In this study, we aimed to investigate the response mechanisms of rhododendron varieties to petal blight, using transcriptomics and metabolomics analyses. Specifically, we monitored changes in gene expression and metabolite accumulation in Rhododendron 'Xiaotaohong' petals infected with the Alternaria sp. strain (MR-9). The infection of MR-9 led to th

BACKGROUND: The cytoplasmic-genic male-sterility system has been extensively employed for the production of onion hybrids. Molecular marker-assisted characterization of the cytotypes and genotyping at the restorer-of male-fertility (Ms) locus is important for the accelerated breeding of onion hybrids. Indian onion breeding has focussed more on open-pollinated varieties than hybrids. To accelerate the breeding efforts, marker-assisted selection (MAS) plays a pivotal role.
METHODS AND RESULTS: This study aimed to characterize the Indian breeding lines, varieties, hybrids, and exotic accessions

During the last decades, the breeding of major crops is growing at a slower rate than desirable to meet future food demands in many agro-environments. Moreover, extreme climatic conditions, and particularly, drought impairments associated with climate change, are limiting the genetic gains of crops in temperate areas, especially in the Mediterranean basin. Drought events and atmospheric air temperatures and CO2 concentrations are increasing at an accelerating pace. Unfortunately, not all breeding programmes have been oriented towards developing climate-resilient crops to cope with future clima

Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris ssp. vulgaris) is a major global source of sucrose. Domestication and a history of breeding have shaped the distribution of deleterious mutations across the genome. Accurately resolving these variants offers a compelling avenue to accelerate crop improvement through breeding or genetic engineering. We combine three evolutionary methods to identify putatively deleterious derived mutations: angiosperm-wide DNA language deep learning model (PlantCaduceus), fine-scale evolutionary rates from Amaranthaceae plant family sequence alignments using PAML and PhyloP. We defined
