Datura stramonium agglutinin (DSA) binds the asparagine-linked sugar chains commonly found in the human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) purified from urine of patients with invasive mole or choriocarcinoma, but not in that of normal pregnant women or patients with hydatidiform mole. With the use of an immobilized DSA column, a novel method to discriminate urinary hCGs from various trophoblastic diseases was developed.

Sialic acid residues were localized by electron microscopy in renal glomeruli of normal and puromycin-treated rats with a cytochemical technique that utilized the Limax flavus lectin. Endothelial cells of the NMRI mouse strain express a cell surface glycoprotein recognized by the lectin Dolichos biflorus agglutinin (DBA). This study documents a marked organ-specific increase in DBA-specific lectin binding of myocardium-derived endothelial cells (MEC) of the NMRI/GSF mouse during in vitro cultivation. An up to 20-fold increase in DBA binding sites is observed in long-term culture, an increase not found in other NMRI-derived endothelial cell lines (e.g., brain, aorta). Two hundred cases of early squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix were studied, 109 with early stromal invasion (ESI) (FIGO stage Ia1) and 91 microcarcinomas (MCs) (stage Ia2). Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in normal pregnancy and hydatidiform mole did not bind to the peanut agglutinin (PNA)-Sepharose column, whereas significant amount of hCG in choriocarcinoma adsorbed to the column. A study was undertaken into the binding of 7 fluorescein (FITC)-labelled, lectins to sheep tissues and cells. Fungi of the order Mucorales cause mucormycosis, a lethal infection with an incompletely understood pathogenesis. We demonstrate that Mucorales fungi produce a toxin, which plays a central role in virulence. Polyclonal antibodies against this toxin inhibit its ability to damage human cells in vitro and prevent hypovolemic shock, organ necrosis and death in mice with mucormycosis. Spontaneous and experimental poisoning with the swainsonine-containing and calystegine-containing plant Ipomoea carnea subsp fistulosa is described.
