Dermatitis artefacta induced in a patient by one of her multiple personalities.

A young woman suffered for 5 weeks with an inexplicable, severe dermatitis limited to her left arm. During hospitalization it was found that she had multiple personalities, one of whom had been applying the leaves of the poison ivy plant each night to her left arm, using 'his' gloved right hand. The factitial nature of the dermatitis was further documented by the fact that when the 'responsible personality' was cut off from supplies of poison ivy in the hospital, 'he' produced factitious haematomas by trauma to her left hand. Although this appears to be the first report of dermatitis artefacta

Hepatogenous photosensitization in ruminants and horses caused by the ingestion of Chamaecrista serpens in Brazil.

This study aimed to describe the first reports of outbreaks of hepatogenous photosensitization in cattle, sheep, and horses caused by spontaneous ingestion of Chamaecrista serpens, as well as to reproduce poisoning in sheep experimentally. Eleven photodermatitis outbreaks of unknown cause occurred in cattle, sheep and horses on nine farms in the semiarid region of Bahia, northeastern Brazil, between July 2017 and July 2020. Cutaneous lesions of photosensitization initiated until one week after the animals were introduced in paddocks invaded by the plant at the beginning of the rainy season. Th

[Cases of suspected poisoning in small animal practice - a retrospective and prospective survey].

OBJECTIVE: Systematic survey of data from cases of suspected poisoning in small animal practices. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 11 exemplary selected small animal practices, patient files from cases of suspected poisoning over 2006/2007, data entry forms of poisonings 2009-2010 and the contact group, which are all patients with at least one visit in 2007, were analysed. RESULTS: In 2007, approximately 1 in 200 dog and 1 in 500 cat patients were presented with poisoning. More than 70 % of cases concerned dogs. Some breeds of hunting dogs were more frequently affected than expected from their perce

Epidemiology of atrazine.

Chronically exposed workers in chemical plants have revealed no increased incidence of benign or malignant disease attributable to atrazine. Some case-control studies showed a slight increase of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) incidence while others were negative. Weighted evidence supports no causal association of malignant changes in farming populations with atrazine. Two studies on a rural population suggested an increase of ovarian tumors in exposed women. Neither statistics nor exposure data are satisfactory, however, and no other studies present supporting evidence. New studies under clearl

A study of socio clinical, biochemical and electrocardiographic changes of yellow oleander seed poisoning in India.

Yellow oleander (Thevetia peruviana), which belongs to the Apocyanaceae family, is a common shrub seen throughout the tropics. All parts of the plant contain high concentrations of cardiac glycosides, which are toxic to cardiac muscle and the autonomic nervous system. The main objective of this study was to socio-clinical, biochemical and electrocardiographic changes of yellow oleander seed poisoning. This prospective observational study was conducted over a period of 6 months (March 2022 to September 2022). Oleander seed poison in most prevalent in the 21-40 years age. More the crushed seeds

Colchicum autumnale poisoning in a dairy farm in Switzerland: a glimpse at the milk safety aspect.

Colchicine poisoning in livestock presents a significant challenge for dairy farming, particularly in regions where Colchicum autumnale (autumn crocus) is prevalent in pastures. This case report describes an incident on an organic dairy farm in Eastern Switzerland where Brown Swiss cattle showed clinical signs after consuming freshly mown meadow forage containing autumn crocus leaves. The ingestion of this highly toxic plant led to severe effects such as apathy, hypothermia, and reduced milk production, which required immediate veterinary intervention. As colchicine was expected to be secreted

[How studies on curare contributed to the development of neurophysiological research in Brazil].

Curare is a poison obtained from different species of plants in South America, which was used in arrows by the natives. Its lethal paralyzing potential and mechanism of action began to be explored in the 19th century. In this article, we highlight the research on this poison and the fruitful exchanges between the Brazilian Emperor Dom Pedro II and the researchers João Baptista de Lacerda, Louis Couty and Alfred Vulpian who contributed to the development of experimental neurophysiology in Brazil. Vulpian found that curare does not affect the nerve itself, but acts between the nerves and the mus

A Literature Review of the Use of Sodium Bicarbonate for the Treatment of QRS Widening.

Sodium bicarbonate is a well-known antidote for tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) poisoning. It has been used for over half a century to treat toxin-induced sodium channel blockade as evidenced by QRS widening on the electrocardiogram (ECG). The purpose of this review is to describe the literature regarding electrophysiological mechanisms and clinical use of this antidote after poisoning by tricyclic antidepressants and other agents. This article will also address the literature supporting an increased serum sodium concentration, alkalemia, or the combination of both as the responsible mechanism(

Mercury residues in livers of bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) found dead or dying in British Columbia, Canada (1987-1994).

Postmortem examinations were conducted on 82 bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) found dead or dying in British Columbia, Canada, from 1987 to 1994. As part of the examination, livers were analyzed for total mercury (Hg) content, as well as methylmercury (meHg) and selenium (Se) in selected individuals. In total, 67 eagles were classed as having low Hg exposure [total Hg liver residues ranging from 0.5 to 17.2 mg/kg dry weight (dw)]. Fourteen eagles were moderately exposed (liver residues ranging from 19.2 to 36.8 mg/kg Hg dw). One eagle was judged to have died of Hg poisoning, with a total

Epidemiological analysis of 2,368 pesticide poisoning patients in Quzhou City, China.

INTRODUCTION: Pesticides, which are chemical compounds, are mainly utilized to eradicate pests such as insects, rodents, fungi, and unwanted plants (weeds). However, improper application or storage of pesticides can lead to poisoning incidents. In China, many patients tend to abandon treatment and return home when their condition severely deteriorates. This behavior makes it challenging for medical institutions to precisely track the patients' subsequent conditions, resulting in the reported number of deaths in the system being lower than the actual figure. METHODS: This research obtained cas

By toxic effects of the dried leaves and stem of Capparis tomentosa on Nubian goats.

Nubian goats were given single or repeated dosages of 5, 2.5 and 0.25 g/kg of dried leaves or stem of C. tomentosa by drench and died or were slaughtered at various times post-dosing. One goat receiving Capparis stem at 2.5 g/kg on every other day basis for 8 days developed signs of toxicosis and recovered following cessation of plant administration. The prominent features of toxicity were inappetence, locomotor disturbances, paresis especially of the hind limbs and recumbency. Lesions comprised perineuronal vacuolation in the gray matter of the spinal cord at the sacral region, centrilobular

Unusual Sting by a Nonindigenous Caterpillar in Europe.

On the French island of Corsica, a 57-y-old woman without significant medical history was stung on the left thumb while she was taking care of an ornamental Ficus benjamina plant. Immediately, she felt intense pain in her hand. She saw a strange caterpillar, later identified by the local poison center as Acharia stimulea. The pain in her hand was evaluated as 8 of 10 using the numerical pain rating scale; only a slight erythema was visible on her skin. Symptoms disappeared within 2 h with use of local anti-inflammatory ointment and oral painkillers. Three other caterpillars emerged out of the

A review of traditional remedies of ciguatera fish poisoning in the Pacific.

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is an illness caused by eating tropical coral fish contaminated with ciguatoxins (CTXs). The clinical management of patients with CFP is generally supportive and symptomatic in nature as no antidote exists. Of the many drugs prescribed, several have been claimed to be efficient in small, uncontrolled studies, but the outcomes of treatments with these medicines are often contradictory. In New Caledonia, traditional remedies are commonly employed in the treatment of CFP and of the 90 plant species catalogued as useful in CFP, the most popular herbal remedy by far i

Development of a new categorization system for pesticides exposure to support harmonized reporting between EU Member States.

OBJECTIVES: European legislation requires reporting from Member States on acute poisoning incidents involving pesticides. However, standard rules for data collection and reporting have not yet been set out. The new categorization system presented in this paper is aimed at enabling Member States to gather comparable data and provide standard reporting on pesticide poisoning exposures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: European Regulations providing separate official categorization of biocidal and plant protection pesticides, were used as a basis to build up a unified pesticide categorization and coding s

Experimental toxicity of verbesina encelioides in sheep and isolation of galegine.

Verbesina encelioides is a widely distributed weed in Argentina. Although it has been suspected as poisonous, there seem to be no previous reports of its toxicity in this country. Its biological activity was evaluated through an experiment in sheep. Four 5-y-old sheep, averaging 33 kg in body weight, were given a single dose of 1.0, 3.2, 5.0 or 6.3 g of dried plant material (17.9% dry matter)/kg body weight orally in a water suspension. Forty-eight hours later, the animals given 5.0 g or 6.3 g showed dullness and lack of appetite. The higher dosed sheep became recumbent a few hours later and d

Enzymatic mechanism and biochemistry for cyanide degradation: a review.

Cyanides are fast-acting poisons, can be lethal if exposed in excess. In spite of fact, cyanides are discharged as effluents in large scale from industries every year. Certain bacteria, fungi, algae and plants produce cyanides. It has been observed that microbes and plant systems can degrade cyanides to less toxic compounds. There are many enzymes, which are produced by microorganisms that utilize cyanides as substrate to make alanine, glutamic acid, alfa-amino-butyric acid, beta-cyanoalanine, etc. Present paper deals with different enzymes, their mechanisms and corresponding pathways with res
